This isn't a pet peeve about plots.

For some months, I planned that my next alien species would be a transparent amphibian. Seriously. I thought the idea of being able to see their organs would be a nice visual in a novel. A bit creepy, but also kind of cool.

Then some stupid Japanese biologists beat me to it: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/09/070928-frog-picture.html

(And I say stupid with sarcasm--it's actually pretty cool.)

That's way cool. You might check out Ghost Catfish, too.

It's still a good idea. Good enough to be real!

They always say truth is stranger than fiction...

I say go ahead and use it anyway. Writers often get their inspiration from odd creatures that really exist (well, I do). If nothing else, think of how many altered horses exist in fantasy/sci-fi worlds.

You mean like the aliens in Abyss? Not the water constructs but the actual species. Didn't OSC do the novelization of that?

Ewww..

on the plus side, it adds credibility to your aliens.

I guess I'll have to watch it, or read it, to find out.
