Hey, does anyone know the rules on submitting simultaneously to multiple agents?

Some agents say they don't want any multiple submissions. Definetely respect that if they make it clear on their submission guidelines. Other than that, there aren't any set guidelines as to how many agents you can query and submit to at a time. I have done it before, and I've heard of plenty of folks sending out materials to more than one agent at a time.

The reason most agents don't want simultaneous submissions makes sense -- they want to know that you've selected them for a reason, not that they're in your "slush pile." They want to feel special. They need to think that you've done your research (which I hope you have), by checking out their client list and looking up some of their publications. They want to know that they would be a good match for you, and that you've put some thought into it.
Think of it like asking a girl on a date. Sure, you could go to a bar some night and just ask a bunch of random women...you might get lucky. But if you've done your research and put some effort into wooing one particular girl, you're going to get a lot farther.

Actually querying many agents at a time is usually not frowned on. Even submitting partials to more than one agent is common. Some agents will request exclusives if they ask to see the entire manuscript but they are the exception not the rule. It is more often publishers who do not want simultaneous submissions. But if you read through websites some do allow it.

I think submit a short extract and synopsis to any agent you please, but only send the full piece to somebody you really want and/or somebody who really wants you. cheers
