I'm loving this series, and not just for the entertainment value which it is giving me. Martin's writing style is elegant, and his world building is superb.
Anyone have some references with writing and story styles good to learn from, and be entertained by?

I've heard great things about Greg Keyes' current series. "The Briar King" is book one. His work has actually been compared to Martin's, but seeing as how I haven't read any of it yet, I can't really say how accurate that is. Still, might be worth checking out.

Ah, very good technical fantasy series that is. If your an avid Medieval Fantasy reader then you should check these out, if you haven't already read them.
- Magician: Apprentice and Magician: Master by Raymond E. Feist - Assassin's Apprentice, Royal Assassin, Assassin's Quest by Robin Hobb - The Big Book of Amber by Roger Zelazny

I haven't read the Martin series yet, but I think the trilogy that Feist wrote with Janny Wurtz was probably easily as good as anything he wrote on his own (not to take anything away from Magician). I don't know that the series had any particular name to it, but I think the first book was Daughter of Empire, and one of the others was Mistress of Empire. If I ever see them again, I'll probably buy them.

Oooh. I'm going to check that out after I read the 13 sci-fi books I just borrowed. (I spend all my money on Playstation 2 games)

Teedee, I've read the first two series. I enjoyed the Feist ones immensely, but I quit caring about the Farseer trilogy halfway through Assassin's Quest and spent twenty minutes skimming through the last three hundred pages.
I borrowed that Zelazny book a few months ago from a friend and still haven't read it. Maybe I should.
