Can anyone recommend a sci-fi novel or two with this premise? I think Battlestar Galactica had that as a premise. ("There are those who believe that life here began out there.") But I'm looking for something more intelligent, or at least more intelligent than the old tv series.

OSC's Homcoming series is kinda the opposite of that.

They all think they came from the planet they're on, but it's their adopted home---they came from Earth. At least at one point.

I read part of that series. It didn't float my boat. Wasn't my cup of tea. Didn't spike my punch.

Mutineer's Moon, which you can read for free over at the Baen site, did this really well and made it important to the story. It turns out that our moon is actually a giant battle station in disguise, think Death Star but not designed for blowing up anything as puny as a mere planet.

Having remembered Mutineer's Moon, I was just coming to post on this topic, but I see Survivor beat me to it.
