This is from Chuck Palahniuk, author of Fight Club among others. He is posting these how-to essays for two months at a time and then they'll be revised and collected in book form. This is one of my favorites:

Do you have the author's permission to reprint his article here? I don't see anything indicating that.

Considering that you have to click on this announcement to read the essays I kinda doubt it.

quote:
“Each essay will be available for two months. Please respect Chuck Palahniuk’s wishes: Do not copy or distribute these essays in any manner whatsoever. They are to be viewed exclusively on ChuckPalahniuk.net. Thank you for understanding and complying. Enjoy. Click here to display essay”

That said, it looks like a great site.

All the stuff in that article is so ingrained in me now that it seems foolishly obvious. However, I once suffered from the "telling syndrome."

I guess it's a sign of my progress as a writer.
I'd do the Brenda example as follows:

Brenda sighed. Would she be able to make the deadline? Traffic was backed up from the bridge, past the first eight or nine exits. Her cell phone battery was dead. At home, the dogs would need to go out, or there would be a mess to clean up. Plus, she'd promised to water the plants for her neighbor. . .
