While I've been writing in the closet for many years I have not really tried to get my work out there until recently (in the last year). I've tried magazines, I tried to Phobos contest....I was wondering what I'm missing. I know there are lots of contests and opportunities out there, but I don't know where/how to find them. Does anyone have any suggestions for Science Fiction/Fantasy contests I might want to shoot for?

Writers of the Future is free, it's every three months, and it pays well.

Go to

http://www.writersofthefuture.com

and find the link on the lefthand side to "contest rules" for more information.

There is also an FAQ (frequently asked questions) link on the lefthand side.

I'd like to plug our very own PaganQuaker, who has now won two WotF contests and whose story, "A Ship That Bends" appears in the anthology currently available as a bookstore near you.

Take a look at
www.ralan.com
It's loaded with stuff.

One problem with WotF website, is that in order to view it, you have to turn off any pop-up blocking software... which means that I have to turn off my firewall in order to view their site.

It actually works OK for me with Mozilla's popup blocking enabled. But that's smart enough to only block popups that occur automatically, and lets you keep ones you click on.

I think most popup blockers work by having you use an HTTP proxy server. If you switch that off (Under Tools / Internet Settings / Connections / LAN Settings for I.E. 6), that will probably be enough. Just remember to switch it on when you're finished :-)

Or, I could post the Writers of the Future rules and instructions here.

You can avoid the popup-blocking problem by going directly to the page that opens in the popup window: http://www.writersofthefuture.com/index2.htm
