The first 100 pages of Speaker are the most boring thing I've ever read.

I found LOTR to be incredibly tedious and didn't bother finishing it. Made it halfway through the second book before giving up.
Crime and Punishment gets my vote. I hear that it gets really good after the first hundred pages. After page 80, however, I couldn't bear to make it through another 20.

That's not the usual experience. Most people who give up do so BEFORE the "death" of Gandalf in Moria. I certainly found that the book went from boring to riveting exactly at that point.

First 100 pages? I read all of the first Wheel of Time book and just about died from multiple head wounds from all the times I fell asleep and rammed my head into my desk.
Fellowship of the Ring was a book I had a hard time getting through the first couple times. But once you get to the halfway point of Two Towers, it REALLY takes off. JonHecht stopped reading right when it got good. But now that I've gotten through it, I love the trilogy and reread it all the time.
I like Ender's Game in general, and I like it as an easy reread I can hammer my way through in a few hours. But I like to reread Speaker and really dig in, because there's more going on and more to think about. It's slower and different, and to some that means boring, but I think I'd still rate it higher.

I guess I'm the only one who enjoys Fellowship more than the rest. I was pretty young when I first read LotR, and that was after I'd read The Hobbit several times, so maybe that has something to do with it. Fellowship had more of a Hobbit feel I suppose.

I read Speaker for the Dead when I was on Deployment. I need to read it again because I remember it starting off as the worst book I have ever read. And for me it never recovered, but I think I was just going through the motions instead of actually reading at some point.

Woah woah woah. How could anyone consider Speaker to be boring?! Not only is it IMO the greatest thing OSC ever wrote, it is one of my favorite books of all time.
Nothing is boring after you've spent the last month trying to hammer your way through Theory of Moral Sentiments again. For the fourth time. (One day I will finish it entirely. One day)

I have read Ender's Game many times, but SftD just once. I'm not sure I thought SftD was boring, but it didn't have the sauce that makes Ender's Game one of my favorite books ever.
LOTR I have read many times as well, and tremble to imagine a world without it. But I remember the first time I read LOTR it was a long slog, especially through the Two Towers. Still, I couldn't even finish the book after Frodo dropped off the Ring because I couldn't bear to see it all end.
Crime and Punishment was a hard book to get through, but I felt like I had really read something valuable once I finished it.
I have heard Moby Dick referred to by many as the best book ever written, but I have never been able to penetrate more than a handful of pages into it.

Moby Dick is excellent. They style can make it a little tricky for modern readers, but it's very good.
It's also hilarious at times.

It depends on what you like. I imagine that, if you can sort of let the language wash over you in an impressionistic kind of way, it could be wonderful. I don't read that way. And it may be harder to do in translation anyway. By the time I was halfway through the first volume, I really wanted to shout at the self-absorbed little whinger to make some friends and get a hobby.

hey, nothing beats Atlas shrugged... most boring first 800 pages ever, couldn't bring myself to keep going for the second half of the book (and have no clue how I made it that far).
