Has anyone watched the Pilot? And if so what did you think?

The premise is ..... interesting. I'm not sure the believability is there, at least not from the first episode. Maybe they can explain some of the things away later on as the show moves on.

Some complained the acting was bad, but I disagree. I think the chemistry for the actors is a work in progress, and the acting could use some polish - but that always comes with time if the shows last. People were calling it bad, and saying they miss Terra Nova if that says anything. I thought the acting in that show was horrid, throughout.

So what do you guys think?

(The Pilot is on Hulu for those that haven't seen it, and care to.)

I randomly wandered past another option as well.

Streaming on Blastr via NBC. Fair warning, NBC still hasn't figured out this whole 'playing video' thing.

Haven't watched it yet but I'm really looking forward to it. Eric Kripke (creator of Supernatural) is one of my favorite producers and creative people working in entertainment right now.

Honestly it seems "ok" so far, I can't say great. It has a sort of "Jericho / Lost" feel to it if you ask me. I'm definitely going to give this season a shot. I've watched some of Supernatural, and need to catch up on the rest.

Posted by AchillesHeel (Member # 11736) on :

It can go a lot of different ways from here, the overarching subplot screams of Jericho but the I would imagine that the episode to episode will play closer to the traveling and smaller post-apocylipse living. I'm not sold on the show yet but this had better get more ratings than Honey Boo Boo.

I'm gonna have to find a way to watch the running series, NBC had me ready to assault the screen with its flash card version fight scenes and character important emotive expressions.

I liked it just fine, didn't blow me away or anything like that. There have been a lot of Jericho comparisons, but the premise actually reminds me a bit more of Jeremiah (but not nearly as good), did anyone watch that JMS show on Showtime?

I generally think these types of shows are served better on cable where they can be a little more gritty/realistic, this felt a bit clean to me. I think they can make up for it with characters who are really compelling. We'll see.

I saw it. It was okay. Giancarlo is great, Dany is well acted, and Miles has a cool presence. But it did feel a little like it was going through (the genre) motions. I'll watch more episodes.

Posted by lem (Member # 6914) on :

I was underwhelmed. It just never gave me a reason to be invested in it. I wanted to like it, and I will give it several more chances/episodes. So far it feels like a 1 season flop.

I think I was mostly dissapointed because I was looking forward to seeing society go through the collapse after the outage. Jumping 15 years into the future took out the most interesting part of the premise for me.

I don't think I have the energy to put into another one of these kinds of shows that'll probably be canceled in within a season.

I have zero faith in the network's willingness to invest in anything other than an instant blockbuster hit.

I'm definitely looking forward to it. Better than nothing.

I already anticipate getting into it and then watching it get canceled after the first season!

We are currently living in a place with limited tv channels so I didn't get to see this yet but I really want to!

Remember, the pilot is streaming on Hulu and NBC. NBC has always had a fairly liberal streaming policy, updating within three days or so of airing. They might not be able to stream in a straight line but choppy video is better than none sometimes.

Yes, I too would have loved to have seen much, much more of Firefly. * disappointed face*

I just watched the pilot. There were quite a few [Roll Eyes] moments, but I always expect those.

How does one keep a low profile living in the grandest joint in town providing folks with alcohol?

Maybe replace the obvious health issue problem, asthma, with something off the beaten path.

The ending just annoyed me. Completely!

I do like Zak Orth's character.

It would have been entertaining to have seen a little more of what everyone went through, initially after the blackout. That's what drew me in to S. M. Stirling’s “Dies The Fire”. When they started actually living quite nicely and rarely needed to scavenge any longer, I kind of drifted off in that series.

Huge serious post-apocalyptic genre junkie here!

Posted by dansigal (Member # 12661) on :

I predict we will get our fair share of flash backs to the missing time periods, for reasons I won't get into because they are spoilery for those who haven't seen the pilot yet.

The one thing that really did bother me about the pilot though was that in 15 years, none of the adults aged, AT ALL. It just kinda bugged me.

I don't think my post had any juicy easter eggs in it, did it? [Smile]

Yes, that bothered me as well. Men age well, but seriously, not a day older?

Posted by Thesifer (Member # 12890) on :

They "aged" but definitely not 15 years aged. A little makeup, pretty subtle.

They will be doing tons of flashbacks. The regular cast includes people that are no longer alive etc.

I'm going to give this like six or ten episodes before I jump into it. If the reviews are solid, I'll give it a shop. I did the same thing with that dinosaur time traveling show and it totally sank. I'm hoping this one does really well, because the idea is very interesting and the people behind it are very talented. Here's hoping.

I wish I'd taken this approach with The Event. And V. And Falling Skies. And Terra Nova. And a dozen other shows that sucked. Oh well, there's always Doctor Who and the last season of Fringe to keep me company.

Falling Skies is one of the few shows of the last few years that I think has been very solid, for a concept post-apocalyptic sci-fi show.

With the exception of some of the child actors, I think it's actually been pretty solid.

I've tried watching Falling Skies, I don't know exactly what it is, but I can't stand the writing and the acting feels forced. I get no sense that they actually care about each other while watching.

Season 1 or Season 2? Because Season 1 was average at best, but Season 2 really stepped up its game if you want fun science fiction television.

I plan on giving it another shot if I can get finished up with season 1. Can't remember if I watched all of that one. I know sometimes it can take cast and writing a season or so to hit their stride, but I couldn't stand the first 10 (at least) episodes.

Watching this now. It's not good, on multiple levels.

Posted by kmbboots (Member # 8576) on :

I saw the pilot last night and didn't find it all that compelling. I didn't connect with any of the characters sufficiently to care about them and didn't get enough of the "mystery" to wonder about that. They could have slowed the plot down enough to do more development of both. Maybe that will happen in flashbacks. I'll give it another couple of episodes anyway.

Also watched Last Resort. Production and acting level on it seem pretty decent.

The Navy side of things is pretty close to how things really go. There were a few dramatic liberties, but overall it should at least be interesting.

I agree. And if people tell me to stick it out for season 2, I just don't know if I can. I really thought the first few episodes were horrible.

Babylon 5 was the same way. I'm sure the last few seasons really are wonderful. I just can't make it through the first.

There are a lot of shows with quality control issues.
- Dollhouse didn't get good until near the end of first season.
- I hear that both Alphas and Falling Skies got better into the second half of Season 1 (but I couldn't stick out either), and that Sarah Connor Chronicles was ten times better in the second season.
- Walking Dead sucked for half of the second season.
- Heck, Fringe was only middling until near the end of the first season, and now it's one of the best shows on tv.

It's sad when a lot of these shows are heavily promoted where quality is all over the map (these, The Event, Alcatraz, Terra Nova, etc) are all over the map, and fantastic shows like Awake can't create any buzz.

On a side note during award season, I would like to see some acting awards (or at least nominations) for genre. Both Fringe and Person of Interest deserved nods.

I've seen all of Dollhouse. I would say it's all generally dumb, contrived fun.

Posted by Thesifer (Member # 12890) on :

The problem seems to be that actors take a little while to start clicking with each other. Sometimes by the time they do, the show is cancelled.

I think Last Resort already seems like a cohesive team. As long as they have plans on where to go, and somehow keep the action and suspense up, it will be worth watching and last.

Will be something to watch. So far caught my attention better than Revolution.

I'm generally willing to give shows two seasons, but only once they are out on blu ray.

I think the problem with the first season of Fringe was the length of the episodes. 50+ minutes works for HBO and in England with 10 - 12 episode seasons. That was a great example of more being less. I never watch commercials anyways, except with the morning news.

The violence in this show is a bit of an overkill. [Roll Eyes] It's turning me off, quickly.

Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :

I couldn't stay interested through the second episode (I was fighting to do so through the first). Yes, the violence is overdone. It's like they're so busy showing me that everyone went medieval that they stopped making the people compelling. I just don't care about them at all.

Posted by dansigal (Member # 12661) on :

I enjoyed the second episode more than the first. Introduction of the rebels gave some context to the title of the show and adds some dimension, I'm interested in where that story line goes.

I have no problem with the violence. It makes the show more realistic/believable. There are real stakes in this world. Bad guys don't go away just cause you show them mercy and the good guys gotta get their hands dirty if they want to survive or do good. Makes me feel confident they aren't "terra noving" this show, aka, taking a potentially interesting scenario and making it nice and safe and giving everyone beautiful granite kitchen counters. And let's be real, its not even compared to what we'd see if this show was on cable, let alone premium cable.

I think it sucks. I watched two episodes and it is so simple and predictable that it makes me laugh...

Posted by Tammy (Member # 4119) on :

It's sloppy, badly written violence. There are shows that are riveting, that I can't wait to watch and that I think about for quite awhile after watching, that are stuffed with violence. It's just well written violence. [Dont Know]

There are going to be bad guys that the good guys are going to have to battle. I'm all over that. I just don't care for the way it's being played out.

I finally finished watching the second episode. I initially turned it off after the hungry deer killing guy was killed. Wait, maybe it was after Miles snapped the Militia guys neck. Maybe Miles is just irritating me. I don't know. I do know that Danny irritates me. As always, I enjoy watching Giancarlo Esposito! I can watch him all day.

I was interested when Danny and Charlie's mom appeared. I also like the flashbacks, just wish they had more.

Foust - The idea of it was better than nothing. Now that I'm two episodes in, I will record it and watch it when I have nothing else to watch. So, better than nothing? Personal opinion. [Smile]

Posted by Stephan (Member # 7549) on :

It has my interest. I want to see where it is going. I think the best part of the show are the flashbacks (from Highlander to Lost the flashbacks always seem to be the best part).

I am bothered by the age of the British woman. She seems way to young to have a 15 - 16 year old.

I am also curious if they are going to bring up how successful cultures in the past dealt with not having electricity.

Steam powered boats? Coal powered trains? Pony express? As little as I like steam punk, I think it would better suit this story then the medieval aspect they seem to want to go for.

If guns work I have a hard time imagining our military being taken over by this guy. With all the massive amount of firearms in our country, I can't fathom so many being taken away by the militia.

Were the first Ford cars electric?

Posted by AchillesHeel (Member # 11736) on :

Of course not, but I think they are operating under the idea that outside of the direct control of various militia groups the world is too dangerous and chaotic for anyone to be truly beneficial.

I'm not opposed to the amount and pacing of the violence, but I can't stand how it is done. Machettes are not swords, please stop calling them swords. Where are they replacing these "swords?" because when you block something with the edge it errodes the edge which you then sharpen by grinding and peeling off metal, invariably weakening the durability of the weapon. Most machettes are stainless steel and are famous for being rust resistant not super hard and tough. Note to the editor, stop guzzling Red Bull and let an action shot last longer than half a second. Some of us would actually like to know who is doing what when they fight. The principles need to get injured, they just do. I'll be the first one to scoff when the makeup is done wrong or the wound heals magically fast but don't pretend that they are super-mega-video-game-level badasses who never ever get touched.

Two episodes in and I am sick of the girls sad puppy dog face. It is really the most poignant thing about her so far, if the show holds on she may show less range than Kristen Stewart.

The chubby guy. I like the actor even though I can't name where I know him from but his age is really really wrong. Episode one has him mentioning being super rich off of Google, but he is in his thirties. So fifteen years ago he was atop the business world and owned his own plane, which must have impressed his girlfriends parents when he picked her up for prom.

Am I the only one who feels condescended to when they name female protagonists boy names? as if it immediatly designates her as more self-reliant and capable.

If I remember correctly they're not her children. Their real mother is being held hostage by that Monroe guy (when I hear his name I have the Monroe doctrine and history classes before my eyes...)

The main girl has only one facial expression. She has a make-up that makes her look sooo unnatural, leather pants like Robin Hood.

As I said, I don't like this show, but I got a little interested when this officer prayed over his dead soldier's body. Maybe he will betray Monroe, when the time comes.

Well the British chick's children have to be at least 15-16 years old because its implied she got stuck in the States when the power went out. I think that was the point of that post.

The thing with the Google guy also struck me immediately. It's feasible he was old enough to have worked for Google when the power went out, but clearly not old enough to have gotten stupidly rich off of being involved with the start up of Google.

Also, I agree, all 3 young adult actors are a problem. None of them have grabbed me. That being said, they all seem fairly new to Hollywood, so actors certainly are capable of improving...I will give them more than 2 episodes to show me why they were cast.

Posted by Tammy (Member # 4119) on :

Right! They'd totally have to be at least 16 or older. I forgot about how long the power had been out.

If Hurley was responsible for that, he has good reasons and I'm trusting that all will work out relatively well.

If Baltar is responsible, I will watch cautiously, while preparing myself for anything, all the while hiding the taser in my back pocket.

I wouldn't be surprised if Monroe knows all about the electricity pendant group and why the power went out, I think he was looking for whatshisname to perhaps keep him from interfering in turning it back on.

Posted by Szymon (Member # 7103) on :

Monroe might have been involved in the creation of this locket-like device that restores power. He and whatshisname's brother somehow knew about the possible blackout (whatshisname's brother called whatshisname just before blackout). Being in possesion of those lockets made him powerful afterwards.

Posted by AchillesHeel (Member # 11736) on :

I don't think Aragorn and Monroe knew anything about it until later, but the fact that Aragorn's brother Whatshisname was a huge clue for Monroe to jump off of.

This is my name list so far.

Charlie - Main character, not much else so far.
Aragorn - Charlie's uncle.
Whatshisname - Charlie's father.
The Mom - Charlie's mom.
Baby Face - Charlie's brother, I considered calling him 'Imminent Death' because that seems to be his role.
Google Guy - Comedic relief, highly unmanly despite his awesome beard.
British Chick - Obvious plot twist character for later.
Male Version of Taylor Lautner - Has a bow and is pretty stupid.
Something Monroe - Overarching bad guy, who will be revealed as a pawn in someone elses plan. Happens to look a lot like Adam Monroe from Heroes.

To be fair, I couldn't give half as much detail on the cast of Terra Nova and about half way through season one.

Whatshisname called Aragorn and was hurriedly trying to explain that stuff was going to turn off, Aragorn seemed to have no comprehension. Whatshisname and family got out of the city as quickly as possible so it is hard to say whether or not Aragorn and Monroe would have been able to find them back then.

Well, I have to admit that I didn't pay much attention to this show, but:

You might be right that Something Monroe is not the main evil character. We are yet to learn if this person at the end of the second episode is perhaps even worse! Sic!

Male version of Taylor Lautner, who in fact is pretty stupid, is pretty stupid and will remain unambiguously ambiguous.

Google Guy's skills may not be as useless as everyone may think...!

Aragorn will meet his match in dodging bullets and having ridiculous luck while sword fighting. This someone may be either Something Monroe or Yet To Be Known Evil Character.

Posted by TheGrimace (Member # 9178) on :

I find that to be an interesting statement Jeff as this episode had a few just painfully terrible moments, such as:

"that boy just died..." or whatever the actual quote was, and

"let's dig out..."

While I'll admit that there were a few redeeming values of the episode, the overall impression it left me with was "the writers don't know how to write coherent dialogue and plot" which is concerning.

Posted by Szymon (Member # 7103) on :

I'm with TheGrimace on this one. I have an impression that the writers don't quite agree with one another. There is one, and I think he/she is quite intelligent, and is trying to make things life-like and real. He's the one who writes "this is why we don't let civilians carry firearms" (pretty funny moment) or who made Aragorn shoot those bad guys in flashbacks. The other one finished a script writing course and is typing with his notebook open. He is responsible for the flatness of Aragorn (seriously, I hate this character, he is so hopeless) and various other cliches, as mentioned by TheGrimace.

And there's the make-up lady, who bought a large stockpile of powder and is desperate to use it all.

Now I'm pretty sure Lord Rochefort is really evil, and possibly not even in the same team with Something Monroe.

Some fans are saying this is pretty good, and it got picked up for a full season. What's the verdict so far?

I generally do not care for "aftermath" stories, because they are inherently depressing and defeatist. Revolution is a little better than usual, since it seems possible that the electricity could get turned back on.

So far, one of the main drawbacks of the show is that it is too provincial--there is no indication of how the rest of the world is faring. This story is a global story in its nature, and all we are seeing is so far about one or two counties, apparently in Illinois in the summer.

But am glad to see any network trying to present science fiction in a half way rational manner.

I think electricity is a little overrated. It is possible that a government would collapse, but not imminent. But US government with a million armed personnel under President's command? Highly unlikely. Sure it'd be difficult, but humans adapt quickly. It'd be like 1880s again, US was just fine.

LOL, I honestly didn't even realize that part about the digging out until you mentioned it, but yes, in retrospect, it's kind of retarded.

Still, maybe I was having a nerdgasm over the fact that Jacob from Lost was now a recurring character on this show, because I was able to forgive most of the silly stuff and focus on the fun aspects.

Yeah I gotta say, I really enjoyed the third episode. The show is what it is, dialogue will never be the best, and there will always be some issues, but I liked the pacing of the action and how they are developing the story through the present and the flashbacks. It held my interest and I thought it actually earned a little emotional moment when the British chick got to turn on her phone and see her children again for just a moment.

I just watched episode three, and one problem seems to be getting worse. I can't tell whether or not the choreography is good or not, the editing is so bad I have no idea what is happening whenever there is a fight. Characters changed rooms, positions on a battlefield, spanned great distances with no enemies in pursuit and just generally didn't let us watch the fights play out. Honestly, there are episodes of Samurai Jack with less cutting between shots.

Aragorn is getting more interesting, in story and in character. Lucifer was cool and I look forward to as much screen time as he can get. I like how Gustavo had two tiny moments in this episode but still managed to steal both scenes from the background. Even Baby Face impressed me in that last scene, though I would have appreciated some bruising on his arms to show that he had been protecting his head while being beaten with a sack just prior.

The pendant seems to follow no straight line ideas. That one lady pushed the center down like a button and it turned on, Google Guy has been monkeying with his and never noticed a button. In episode one it was a usb drive, the lines have dissapeared since then so it is now one piece. And that whole "randomly turn on bit" felt like a dash of supernatural occurance rather than technological.

The aging continues to drag down my appreciation of the show.

as with everyone else I'm still trucking along and trying to support the show, largely out of support for the sci-fi/post-apocalyptic genre in general. There's certainly some gems such as basically everything associated with the storm in last episode and the lovely dynamic of enemies having to rely on each other, but still remaining enemies.

Unfortunately there's also a lot of unnecessarily pulled punches and such that just directly detract from the show... things like the "we're going to torture you now" moment with the torture implements followed by a scene where mom looks completely unharmed. If you're going to set up a world where we know people are being tortured and then rub that in our face don't immediately take it back and act like it didn't happen.

Also, did anyone else notice the first shot of the diner where they took cover from the dogs? It looked like a snapshot taken on my old 1 megapixel cellphone camera...

SPOILER ALERT!!!

Aww, they killed off the "British chick." I liked her. She was pretty without being teenager cute, and her character was the most perceptive and capable of the bunch. Now the writers can spring plot surprises and deceptions that she would have foreseen or seen through. They did fill in a lot of interesting back story about her. Just to increase our feeling of loss, apparently.

For the computer to work with a modem that Grace was using, wouldn't it require an electronic infrastructure somewhere between the two computers communicating? Unless of course Grace was talking to the real world. I really think this is all a computer simulation.

I like how steam ships finally got mentioned. But used for lumber? With all these trees around? Even ancient Rome understood the need for a strong transportation network.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!

I think that the British girl's kids will be introduced later in the series, now that we have an emotional investment in them.

Agreed. Otherwise she was completely pointless.

I have been watching the series, but have not been impressed. I'm not a fan of Charlie. She just gets on my nerves.

I liked the dies the fire universe better, where all technology went down...not just electricity. Though, I do think it is likely that the government would collapse without it. As the Roman's showed us a major key to keeping an empire together is transportation (and communication). Without electricity we loose both. Sure, there is steam power (as we saw in the show), but right now we don't have enough of it available to quickly keep our transportation system going. We would be a lot worse off now without electricity than we would have been if it had happened 50 years ago.
