My wife has just hit 27 weeks, the 3rd trimester. She has gained about 26 pounds so far. Her diet has been changed a little bit, in the following ways:

More fruits and veggies
No lunch or processed meat
Less Soda
Rare indulgences.

I hear the general opinion is that 25-35 lbs. is a healthy amount of weight to gain. If she follows her average gain of a pound a week, she could easily top 40+ by the time the baby is born.

How concerned should we be that she is/will be overweight, and how hard should the weight be to lose afterwards?

Thanks for any and all insights!

This varies so much, and depends on so many factors. What does her doctor or midwife say about the weight gain?

As for losing the weight after, some women find it easy and some struggle for years. Heredity makes a lot of difference; other things make small differences. Nursing (if that's an option) usually helps most women lose pregnancy weight.

It's also not a given that she will gain a pound/week. No matter where I've started, I've ended up around the same place with each of my pregnancies. This pregnancy (8), I've only gained 2 pounds in my third trimester and I only have about 3 weeks to go.

When they said. Things change so much as the pregnancy progresses that you can't assume that just because she averaged a pound/week in the first trimesters that will continue for the whole pregnancy.

It also depends very much on her weight to start with. If she was very thin, a 40 lb gain would not be unusual. I'm pretty sure there were women on one of the earlier pregnancy threads here that gained that much. If she was overweight to start with it would be more of a concern.

It boils down to what rivka said -- ask your doctor or midwife.

In my second pregnancy, I think I gained all my weight during the second trimester and the last 2 weeks of pregnancy. There were like 10 weeks near the end were I gained nothing. First baby, I gained steadily throughout. First baby, when I felt sick, eating helped. Second baby, not so much and I felt like puking most of the first and third trimester (which explains weight gain pattern). I wouldn't worry about it if dr isn't.
