Tucker and Dale vs Evil is great. It stars Alan Tudyk from Firefly and Tyler Labine from Reaper. It's a great play on the cabin slaughter genre.

'Downton Abbey'. It's BRILLIANT! A period television show focusing around the family and staff of a British estate starting with the sinking of the Titanic and going through and past WWI. Sounds dry, but it does a great job of making its characters defined and making you care about them.
And Maggie Smith is golden and hilarious as the conservative grandmother.
Also check out "Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon". It would be a nice companion piece to 'Tucker & Dale'.

It shows that story and characterization trump things like setting and style. It's also a great example of how to use melodrama effectively.
I've watched both season 1 and 2 (only the first is currently on Netflix streaming), and will be watching the X-Mas special this week at some point.
Out of curiosity, given the massive size of the cast, who happens to be your favorite character? Mine is Carson, though my favorite storyline belongs to Mr. Bates and Anna.

Oh that's a hard one. I agree my favorite plot thread is Mr. Bates and Anna. I have a ridiculous crush on Sybil, seriously lookather!
I'd have to say though I'm very partial to Matthew Crawley.

I recently watched the entire series of Avatar: The Last Airbender. It was truly amazing, as far as cartoons go. The humor and plot twists in the show are some of the best I've seen in any TV show, including live action.
Now, however, I'm stuck finding a replacement to that. I've been scouring Netflix looking for a decent cartoon or anime, but so far I've only found mediocre replacements. I've already seen Fulmetal Alchemist and Trigun, both of which were great, but I want something new.

Its too bad that Netflix only has access to the Japanese version, the English dubbed episodes are some of the best work I've seen in regards to syncing animation to a new language no to mention the great voice acting in general.
I've watched plenty of anime in Japanese but some shows are downright unbearable under those conditions, imagine watching old DBZ episodes and seeing at the bottom of the screen "aaaaaaaah... aaaaaaaah." And yet I've grown to hate Bleach in english, weird right?
Posted by Jeff C. (Member # 12496) on :
It really surprises me that they don't have more English dubs on Netflix for the popular shows, but they do for the lesser known ones. Bleach, Naturo, Inuyasha, and Death Note are all in Japanese for some strange reason. There must be some kind of licensing issue or something, because those shows are some of the most popular animes among kids in the US.
Oh well, at least Fulmetal Alchemist is in English.

You know, its been almost two years since I watched Lo but I'm still impressed by it. Making a movie that is 90% conversation and set in near darkness is quite brave and they did it wonderfully, the story is actually about love despite its Hellraiser image. I've seen all of FMA: Brotherhood (own all the dvd's) and I thought it was brilliant. Loved the characters, story, and voice-acting.
I haven't seen Baccano yet, but it's in my instant queue. I've heard a lot of good things about it, so I really hope I can get into it.
I've also been watching Being Human (the North American version). It's pretty good so far, but there's only one season of it (13 episodes). Season 2 has already been made and starts airing this month, so there's more coming. If you want more, the UK version (which is the original) is also on netflix, and I think there's three seasons of that one.
Oh, Being Human is about a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost all living together. I usually hate stuff like this (Twilight and Vampire Diaries are, in my opinion, quite horrible), but for some reason I like this show so far.
Posted by LargeTuna (Member # 10512) on :
I thought the UK version of Being Human was fantastic (at lest for the first 2 seasons) but I couldn't make the switch to the American one. The characters just weren't for me I guess.

Spaced is on Netflix, and it's definitely worth watching. There's a surprising amount of BBC content on Netflix. Fawlty Towers is on there as well.
Posted by AchillesHeel (Member # 11736) on :
Being Human UK is fantastic, but I can't bring myself to watch the American version, I just don't think it was necessary. Also its difficult to get away with some of the best parts of Being Human in the states, my favorite joke is when George sees someone has painted "peedo" on the front door and yells out to the neighborhood "there is only E in pedo!" I don't think humor like that would get past the censors.
Posted by Shanna (Member # 7900) on :
Being Human UK is must more of a human drama. Not surprisingly, the American version is way more focused on the supernatural elements. And the American cast doesn't have the same playful energy as the British cast. And the characters were written with relatable quirks (Annie and her tea, the boys discussing silly television). I watched a few episodes but got bored.
I need to give Spaced another try. I tried to watch it once awhile back and couldn't get into it, but maybe I wasn't in the right mood for it.
I did watch Fawlty Towers last night actually. It reminds me of the first time my dad introduced it to my brothers and me, back when we were in high school. We drove my mother nuts with the Manuel quotes for a month straight.

I'm curious about the picture and sound quality. I don't mind if TV show are just TV show quality, but if I watch movies I want at least DVD quality sound and picture.
Also, I assume the download consume Internet bandwidth. Have any service providers complain about excessive bandwidth? Or attempted to raise rates?
When you are streaming a download of a movie, does the Internet speed of everyone else in the house slow to a crawl?
There are a lot of obscure indy films I'd like to see, but they will never play within 100 mile of where I live, and in some cases not within 500 miles of where I live, and the local video store will never have them in stock.
Typically, rather than drive 100 miles each way, it is cheaper to simply order them on DVD and add them to my collection. (such as it is)
I've considered Netflix, and might consider looking into Blockbuster down loads, but I have my doubts about the quality. Plus, I'm not sitting and watching movies on my computer. I need to find a way to stream them to my TV.
Just curious about the experience of those who have used the service.

I stream using my nook and my wii. I haven't had any problems with the quality but one device is a 7-inch screen and the other is hooked to a tv from 2003 so I may be used to it. But it never looks worse than a dvd usually does.
I have the cheapest high-speed internet plan that my cable provider offers. I don't notice any changes to my internet speed outside a few extreme exceptions. Doing heavy downloading on my laptop while streaming on my tv is just a big no-no. One or the other quits working.
The biggest value to me are the recommendations for films and tv shows that I would not ever thought to try. Titles of movies that I'd never even heard of. Just the other night I watched an interesting documentary on the history of Native Americans in film. Quite interesting and I wouldn't have known about it without netflix.

I just watched D13: Ultimatum, the sequel to the Luc Besson produced French parkour action flick D13. They definitely upped the budget and for particular scenes provided great sets for parkour in a single room. The world of D13 was expanded and the new characters fleshed out without taking a lot of time on them. There are some definitely recycled ideas, but they do come with superior funding and locations. If nothing else you should watch this for the cop character reintroduction.
Oh, and in case anyone that is paying attention to this thread who didn't the original, Lo and Ink are two very unique indie films that deserve a watch.
Also streaming is the latest Kevin Smith film, Red State, nsfw (inspired by the Phelps whacko's) which he toured theatrically himself and released as VOD before taking it to DVD and streaming. This is his first foray into action and horror and is totally unlike anything he has done in the past. I know Hatrack is not brimming with Smith supporters, but you might be surprised with the content and gravitas of the movie.

I am hooked. While watching the show I actually felt like I was watching an HD recording of the 1960's. The acting is top notch, and with the exception of January Jones (can't stand her) the cast is excellent.
Give it a shot, it really is an excellent show.

January Jones seriously hurt Xmen First Class, a movie which needed all the help it could get.
I'm watching Life, a cop show about a wrongfully convicted, then released after 12 years(and made rich from a settlement) homicide detective ginger with freaky lips.
It's a bit of fun, and they only made two seasons (1.5 really since the first one is only 11 eps). The main detective had to adopt zen sensibilities to withstand the brutality of being a cop in prison, and his unique perspective helps him solve cases with his beautiful but hard nosed partner, while he behind the scenes searches for the dirty cops who set him up.
One of my favorite moments on TV is in the pilot ep. ##SPOILERS## The detectives are looking for a suspect, who is armed and shooting while shouting about how he never killed anyone. The main character shoots him and clears the suspect's shotgun. Now dying, the suspect keeps repeating, "I didn't kill no body." and the detective smooths back his hair and says "Shhhh, it's okay, it was just a dream." Chokes me up man. He did his job, did what he had to do, but still had the humanity to comfort the dying.
It is because of this scene I gave the series a shot, and by and large have been enjoying it.

I strongly recommend the Hulk Vs. movies as well as Planet Hulk, and Thor. Dr. Strange, and Iron Man are good, but not amazing. All of these can get you better acquainted with the comic continuity really fast. Ultimate Avengers 1 and 2 are pretty bad, the animation is pretty spotty and they adapted all the bad parts of the Ultimates. They're not too long and if you're interested in getting into the Ultimate universe they may help, so there is that.

The only things you mentioned above were the typeface and music; otherwise, you said it was 75% enjoyable. Based on what you said and without knowing what "choices. . . make you want to pull out your hair", I can only draw the conclusion the music and typeface constitute the 25% which "sux."
You haven't made a very compelling argument for what about the actual movie "sux" other than elements which are entirely subjective (and likely intentional choices made by the filmmaker) and don't even require one to see the movie.
It'd be comparable to saying you thought Star Wars sucked because you didn't like the blaster/laser special effects. It's something you could see in the previews which doesn't have any real effect on the quality of the movie overall.

Speaking of Breaking Bad, I think the characters are all flawed, realistic, and human, much more so than some of the other shows you see out there. A lot of heroes are really stereotypical in most stories, but every character in Breaking Bad has both good and bad sides to them, just like real people. You can at least understand their reasoning, even if you don't agree with it. Even Hank has his flaws (he's unappreciative of his wife, so much so that she feels neglected). Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't recommend this to my parents or anyone that's easily offended, but the acting and dialogue on this show is some of the best I've ever seen.

It's a movie about a young man (Johny Depp, before he was only freak bad movies) feeling trapped in a small town, finding love, dealing with his mentally retarded younger brother (Leonardo diCaprio) and other family woes.
Great cast, great acting, great...movie.

Neverland was better than I thought it would be, it was extremely grown-up story-telling in a world crafted for children. To go any darker than they did would have been a true deviation of the original content in my opinion, and they hit that sweet spot far more accurately than I could have thought possible. Plus Bob Haskins is immortal apparently.
And Special which I don't how to endorse despite my fervent appreciation of the flick. I found it more heartwarming than the trailer would make you believe.
Edit to add. Boy Wonder really surprised me, I love the pacing and the fight scenes are very honest. The ending is something special.

I really want to heartily recommend The Booth at the End. I haven't seen it discussed on Hatrack, and I think several people here would like it.
I know it is only on Hulu Streaming, but it is available without needing to sign up for a free account or a paid account. It is a Hulu exclusive show. I have seen all of Season 1 and all of Season 2 (that is available), and I am hooked.
The premise is different people go to "The Man" in a booth at a diner and ask for a wish. He looks in a book and tells them the cost. The entire show is always just two people talking, and it is gripping. It is creepy, disturbing, engaging, has great dialogue--all dialogue-- and superb acting.
It is the Ultimate Moral Dilemma show.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :
Do not watch the new version until the end. If you would like to know when you should stop watching and make up a more satisfying ending in your own head, let me know.
In related news, you should not finish King's Dark Tower series, and should stop watching Lost and Heroes fairly early in their runs. I know that all of us geeks are ridiculous completionists, but we do not need to keep watching something after it has turned to crap just so we know what the creators "intended" -- especially since so many creators are really just winging it.

Posted by umberhulk (Member # 11788) on :
All of Season 2. First six episodes of season 3. It's a lot better than decent, though.
A lot of Season 3 after than is kind of dull, but the last four episodes were great. Season 4 has cool moments, but it's not necessary, and yeah, ending is stupid.
Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :
Beginning in Season 3, the writers sort of forget who the characters are.
I'm not even sort of kidding. They start consciously railroading the plot in a variety of different directions -- and even quite clearly change their mind about those directions two or three times, which are pretty obviously marked -- and stop caring whether the characters as written so far would actually do the things the plot demands of them.
In some cases, this actually produces individual episodes worth watching; in some very rare cases, it produces arcs of episodes worth watching -- but those arcs generally fail to pay off, probably because the writers changed their mind about what the payoff should be halfway through. So it's hard, with BSG, to say where you should stop, because there are some individually very excellent episodes in S3 and S4 that unfortunately would require watching some very, very terrible or tedious episodes to understand. But perhaps that's not a problem; by S4, the plot has become so detached from character motivations that everyone appears to be behaving largely randomly, anyway, so maybe it's okay to just watch those episodes and pretend that something happened between them to make the continuity make sense.
I'd say to stop at the end of S2, but the truth is that you'll miss out on some fine television if you do that. The thing is, the show you're watching by the last half of S3 is no longer the same show you started watching.

I'd heard so much about Freak and Geeks, so I was eager to check it out. I was extremely disappointed. I liked (but didn't love) the Geeks storyline, but the Freaks one was so stupid.
It was like watching the Simpsons. Just about every episode, they showed Lindsay that they didn't really care about her and were going to mess up her life, she'd freak out and then next episode go back to hanging out with them with the previous stuff forgotten. I didn't get the attraction in the first place. I mean, she thought Daniel was cute and wanted to hang out around him, but she gave up on that pretty quickly. I don't see why you would chose to continue to hang out with them. The show (I think) tried to present it like there were only two groups to hang out with at the school, which is clearly not true.
I don't know, that storyline seemed like it would only work if you somehow liked the Freaks and Lindsey and found something admirable about them, but, except for Nick (I liked the start of the storyline where the adult Weirs were trying to help Nick out), I just didn't. They were annoying losers and she was a whiny, spoiled girl who didn't deserve the latitude people were giving her.
Posted by advice for robots (Member # 2544) on :
I loved the pilot of Freaks and Geeks, especially the whole fight and then Lindsay dancing with that boy at the very end. The Freaks didn't make a ton of sense, though. And I hate it when parents are so two-dimensional.
Posted by MrSquicky (Member # 1802) on :
The parents started developing more as time when on. One of my problems with the show was that it felt like we were supposed to be on Lindsey's side against her parents in a "They mean well, but they just don't get it" way, but they were so obviously right. Every time they gave her freedom or trust, she abused it. Her friends were losers and she was following them into becoming a loser. Heck, the last scene of the show was her lying to them and ditching a prestigious and very limited opportunity to pursue things she used to like before she started hanging out with the Freaks to go follow the Grateful Dead around.
Posted by Speed (Member # 5162) on :
I don't think we were ever supposed to be on Lindsay's side. Or at least, not against her parents. One of my favorite things about that series is that there weren't any real antagonists among the main or recurring characters. Even the people that started out being jerks end up getting a sympathetic portrayal, and the people who started out as heroes were given human flaws. Most of the conflict throughout the series isn't good-guy-vs-bad-guy. It's situations in which you can sympathize with people on all sides.
In the end that's what I loved about the show. The plots weren't necessarily complex or innovative. But I really grew attached to all the characters. There wasn't anyone on the show that I didn't want to see again. And there was no one that I wanted to see fail. The show managed to put me on everyone's side in a compelling way, which is sort of unique.

There were parts I didn't care for, but I quite liked the show the entire way through. (I only watched it for my first time over the summer.)
Also, as was suggested in the previous page--Sgt. Frog.
I went to my brother's for Thanksgiving and the entire family watches the show. I was laughing very hard throughout it.
Posted by Stone_Wolf_ (Member # 8299) on :
Out of curiosity (as there were parts I didn't care for as well) which parts?
Posted by Vadon (Member # 4561) on :
(Spoilers, naturally)
The relationship of Dee and Apollo came out of nowhere. The storyline of finding and punishing collaborators dragged. Gaius and his cult got old pretty quick. The Pegasus story arc was predictable to a t, making it drag way too long for me. I know how that story is going to end, so why must I sit through three episodes for everyone else to pick up on the fact that the admiral was kinda out of touch?
But I'm a sucker for post-apocalyptic fiction so I am willing to look over those parts for the greater whole. I also quite liked the ending, though from what I understand many people didn't.

It was a betrayal.
I don't mind that it was supernatural, but the supernatural part didn't hang together the way that good fantasy has to. What were the Lords of Kobol? Why were there 12 of them and 12 Cylon models? What was the Cylon God's relationship to the Lords?
Also, apparently everyone was having this opera house dream so that they would know that they would all be standing in that very same arrangement in the future, and nothing interesting would happen. Awesome precognition!!

The short of my answer is that I don't really care.
But the longer answer from my perspective (understanding that I didn't really talk about each episode with folks as they came out or went on bulletin boards for speculation).
They have something that I think was called the Pythian Prophecy? It said something to the effect of everything that is happening has happened before and will happen again. When they ended up on Earth showing our modern present-day, I took it to be that there is some higher power influencing the events but that whatever name you give them--be it the cylon God, the lords of Kobol, or our God(s)--the only truth is the cyclical nature of the universe. What form the true God takes is incidental to the fact that there's some big person pulling the strings in ways that we can't comprehend.
Maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention to those details to be peeved by the ending not really answering those questions well--but it was just something I didn't care about.
I was mostly paying attention to the plight of humanity and hoping for a satisfying resolution. That they ended up finding the Earth we know today in a twist was a good enough ending for me.

I actually thought the precog moments, like the big reveal in Daybreak of what the Opera House vision meant, and the reveal with Kara at the piano a couple episodes before were really well executed. I was pretty invested in the show from the start, so I was predisposed to like it.
I always wonder with a show like BSG how much the viewing experience matters. Does marathon watching it all at once make it less enjoyable than the tension that's built up over many years of watching?

I think that may be the exact reason I didn't mind the ending so much. I didn't have years of investment into the show to stew over each episode week to week. Without that delay, I think it was much easier for me to shrug off parts I didn't like.

I remember watching that when I was a kid. It was so surreal.

For fans of British period films:
The BBC mini-series of Daniel Deronda (with Hugh Dancy, Romola Garai, Hugh Bonneville and Jodhi May) is probably the best screen adaptation of a Victorian novel I've ever seen. (Even better than the Jennifer Ehle/Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice, which was my previous favorite.)
North and South and Middlemarch are also excellent.

Amazon is not bad but Netflix also a good choice.

Watched Safety Not Guaranteed over the weekend. Surprisingly good film. Has the same sort of feel to it that TiMER did.

Alice is an urban fantasy recreation of Alice in Wonderland. I'm watching it right now and the introduction of Mad March has me sold on the whole thing kit and kaboodle.
Kathy Bates, Tim Curry, Colm Meaney and Alessandro Juliani (Lt. Felix Gaeta from Battlestar Galactica) are familiar faces without hogging more screen time than their roles deserve.

Safety not Guaranteed was genuinely my favorite movie of the year.

The Killing season 2 is now on Netflix. Yay!
Posted by AchillesHeel (Member # 11736) on :
Good news: Samurai Jack is now streaming.
Bad news: just season one.
Also a slew of other Cartoon Network shows like Dexter's Lab and Ed, Edd and Eddy.

the first season of all three ben10 shows, and Venture Bros., Boondocks, etc. netflix is such a tease

Hemlock Grove is Netflix's second in house produced show, and the first original production. As far as I'm concerned Netflix is two for two, I can't wait for their next project.
The show relies upon its ability to surprise the viewer so it is difficult to evangelize without ruining it. Just watch the first two episodes.
You will be hooked.

So I don't know if anyone's noticed, but they added The Avengers to netflix. Pretty awesome.
Also, I've been watching Rescue Me lately and while I am only on season 2, it's a pretty good show.
Aside from that, there's also the new Tron TV show for those interested.

The Fall, a taut British detective thriller, is now streaming on Netflix. It stars Gillian Anderson in a stunning performance. She's a strong-minded and clever Detective superintendent(?) who is sent to Belfast to help with a murder investigation. Turns out it's a serial killer.
Part of it is seen from the serial killer's POV, which is kind of disturbing because of how clueless the people in his life are. If there is one negative about it, to me, it would be that the killing scenes are filmed in the usual, vaguely titillating way that most shows with violence against women seem to prefer. I would hardly notice (it's so prevalent as to be almost universal), but after having seen how American Horror Story handles its violence against women, I notice it more.
AHS: Asylum, especially, managed to show violence against women as ugly, and the perpetrators of it as essentially broken. Since I saw that, I can't help but compare everything to it. So I guess that goes on my list of recs, too. Except it won't be on streaming until the fall.

The Man From Nowhere is as close to a perfect movie as I have ever seen.
The story, dialogue, locations, acting, shot direction, fight choreography and overall emotional peak of the movie are all amazing. I turned on yet another foreign action/martial arts movie with my tablet on my lap ready to ignore the flick whenever I found something more interesting online. By the half hour mark my elbows were on my knees and my eyes glued to the screen. It goes far and beyond what makes a beat'em up movie good, it is genuinely a good story all around.
Unfortunately there are some amazing movies that are no longer streaming that I just recently discovered missing. Lo, Ink and Moon. Three movies I love to refer people to, but can be hard to find without them streaming. Though I did find Ink on youtube in one full video so I could show my roommate.

I love ink, I actually keep a copy of it on my mp3 player so I always have a movie with me if I get bored. I plan to watch The Man From Nowhere tonight. I've been on a Korean movie kick of late.
Posted by Wingracer (Member # 12293) on :
OK, watched The Man From Nowhere, definitely a first class action movie. I still can't put it ahead of Oldboy and Castaway on the Moon as my favorite but slots into a very strong third. Next up on my Korean movie exploration, A Bittersweet Life and I'm a Cyborg but That's OK.

This is the only one I've seen and I loved it. I never read the comics, though. Give it a shot and see if it changes your opinion.

I can't stand the effect of motion comics. I think it ruins the original art, and it is beneath the potential of the digital artists and animators that convert it.
Burn Notice season six is out now.
Posted by umberhulk (Member # 11788) on :
Burn Notice peaked at the end of Season 2. And the show that started in 2007 was basically over around season 4/5. The conflict is still related to the first season, but I just don't care any more.

Yeah I loved the first two seasons but lost interest once Jesse came into the picture.

I wish marvel would take a page out of DC's book and start making high quality direct to video cartoon adaptations of their biggest comic stories. I would LOVE to see some X-Men or Spiderman movies that allow themselves to be a bit more hardcore than the live action films or the kids cartoon shows.
Maybe one day.

Also, the recent Judge Dredd movie got added. I really dug the first two thirds of that movie.

Dredd was excellent. Supposedly it didn't earn that much in the box office. However, word of mouth has been great, and it's budget wasn't that much. Hopefully it eventually gets a sequel.
Posted by umberhulk (Member # 11788) on :
if you liked Judge Dredd, check out The Raid. It might be the most violent movie you'll ever see.
Posted by AchillesHeel (Member # 11736) on :
I was so sickeningly happy with Dredd, that when I told my roommate about I watched it a second time.
The end of Fringe is streaming.
Battle Royale 1 and 2.
The first three seasons of Archer if you haven't gotten on that bandwagon yet.
Has anyone watched that new Netflix show Derek? I would appreciate a review seeing as I have no interest but Netflix has done well so far and I want to see it continue.
Posted by Sa'eed (Member # 12368) on :
The Italian Job, 2003.
Missed it all those years ago. Definitely a fun movie.
The references to Napster seem SO outdated though. I wish film makers would anticipate this sort of thing!

Dresden Files, if it's still on Netflix. I had read a few of the books and enjoyed them, so I approached it with a positive attitude. It wasn't super, super fantastic, but it was a lot of fun. As I keep working my way through the books I find myself wishing Jim Butcher would develop the Bob character along the lines the t.v. show did.

Still waiting for the next season of Orphan Black, though I've already spoiled myself silly on this one (I've been good for the Americans, so SHHH). Also Archer #5.

Hi Marek...
Our family also loves Frasier, Friends (not when our kid is in the room tho), & 30 Rock (and sometimes Raymond).
Our other go-to shows are The Office (US), Parks & Rec (Amy Poehler!!) and The Andy Griffith Show.

Inadvertent double post.
So as long as I'm here...Kimmy Schmidt is awesome for a sitcom.
And I love House of Cards (my husband is appalled. I don't know why he is so surprised, given season 1. But whatever)
I'm sure both shows have been mentioned multiple times...but, you know, inadvertent double post. I feel like I need to say something.
