http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2011/dec/21/christian-bale-embarrassed-says-china

I don't believe my eyes!

The Government of China demanding that Christian Bale be embarrassed?!!!?

Where is THEIR embarrassment for Mao and his cronies having sex with a constant stream of 12 year old girls because those old reprobates had some perverted belief that screwing a virgin would prolong their longevity.

Where is THEIR embarrassment for murdering millions of their own people?

Where is THEIR embarrassment for trying to justify the killing millions of babies at the moment of birth?

And I'm still reeling from the fact of my own government has been pissing down both legs like a whipped dog to appease China and award them with most favored trade status. It can only be explained by Capitalism (Not to be confused by "free enterprise".) But Capitalism as defined as "whoever has the capital (and can buy enough members of Congress ) makes the rules". And therefore a whole bunch of American business empires stand to gain by trade with China.

And yes, I'm fully expecting several of you to savage me for what I've just said. The last time I posted some controversial non-politically correct opinion I got savaged by several people on this forum who later proved to be hypocrites in that they later expressed opinions on other threads agreeing with my opinion which they had savaged previously. They are probably thinking of themselves as master debaters who can stroke up stimulating arguments for both sides.

Be that as it may, There are still some moral absolutes, and I still say that the government of China has a lot of disgusting things to answer for.

Uhm, what evidence is there that Mao had sex with 12 year olds? I hope you are aware Tom Clancy and Jung Chang are not valid sources, as far as I am aware from scholarly works like Mao: A Life he had sex a lot yes but they were adults who could be considered comparable to groupies.

Also legally intent matters, the "millions" "murdered" is from at worst negligence, China didn't experience Stalinist holodomor here, it wasn't deliberate.

Also seriously don't bash on the one child policy unless you are willing to offer a better alternative, I am sick and tired of people enforcing their own moralism on other people and countries who are doing their best to solve a demographic crisis.

Seriously stop spazzing out with knee jerk emotionalist appeals. Is this a critical issue? Hell no, so what are you complaining about?

It never ceases to amaze me when so called "activists" flout the laws of a sovereign country and get arrested still have the energy and lack of self awareness to whine about it.

I have to wonder if this was actually a really clever publicity stunt. Apparently, Apple Daily reported a big surge in box office gross due to the visit.

Interesting that this is the tack of defense. It was only negligence that killed millions, it wasn't "deliberate."

I do have a hard time, frankly, imagining a set of government policies or responses that end up resulting in the premature deaths of great numbers of people not involving some act of commission on the part of the government. It *is* a deliberate choice to let people die, even if the choice is between, say, preserving your own government and letting them die. So perhaps it wasn't deliberate murder in all cases (though there has been plenty of deliberate murder by the Chinese government in the past century), but I think that's rather ignoring the real culpability that the government has for those deaths.

I just find it a little bit odd as a defense; like there would some situation where you would deliberately kill millions of people, and that bears an important distinction from killing them through neglect or poor leadership, or leveraging your inadequate resources towards bolstering your state, instead of saving people from starvation.

I can get on board with the idea that Holodomor genocide is one thing, and this is something else, but it's not out of the ballpark.

So it's ok to be killing female children at birth, simply because they are not male, for numerous generations?

Bullshit.

Better alternative:

- no one child policy

Actually, I'd be on board with that. Probably the highest of the top ten things I would do if made dictator of China and one of the things that could be done relatively quickly.

Probably best to start here. What's the Chinese government in the past century? Well, the 100 year anniversary of the fall of the Qing comes in February, so we've got the Qing, the Republic of China, the warlords, and the PRC (which itself has arguably gone through two or more revolutions without changing the name).

Then you plot something like the list of largest famines in the world http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_natural_disasters_by_death_toll#Famines and you start to notice that while the largest single famine took place during the PRC, there are also huge famines that took place during the Qing, during the republican period, and during the warlord period. The two Qing famines are probably four or five times larger than the Holodomor.

You start to unravel it and I think it's hard to get all ideological about it or just blame a handful of leaders. It's a fact that the CCP definitely made things a whole lot worse, but there are also large systemic geographical, societal, and governmental problems that persist on through the generations. You could say that the malice has persisted through the various governments, but I would pin the bulk of it on "Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence."
