You know, I thought I understood Ukrainian politics, as much as any political science undergraduate could but now I stand completely baffled.

Yulia Tymoshenko at first glance seems less pro russian than the opposition dude who recently won the election (she was against extended the Sevastopol lease, he was for) but apparantly the 2009 natural gas dispute was resolved by her in a pro russian manner and now arrested for "absue of office" in what the European Union and Russia express dismay over (with the Russians saying the trial has a clear "anti Russian" sentiment).

If this was a selectively political anti corruption campaign I imagine supposedly by Yanukuvich I stand completely baffled as I thought he as more pro russian or at elast much more restrained and conciliatory; is the justice system/security system operating on its own?

Baffling.

Breaking it down as a matter of how "pro-Russian" a particular person is, doesn't seem entirely useful, particularly in understanding this event. Ukrainian politics is as personal as it is driven by East/West alignment- who were her business partners? Who has she done favors for in the past? Whose support do the president or the Parliamentary leaders wish to gain? Nothing in that area of the world is impersonal- none of them have a real ideology, just a flavor of the week. It is baffling, I grant. I've studied it a long time, and I don't get it at all.
