Terraria (pronounced similar to "Terrarium") is a 2D indie title by Andrew "Redigit" Spinks and Jeremy "Blue" Guerrette that involves exploring the randomly generated world you are given to find resources to build and defend your home from monsters.

Sound familiar? Well, Terraria is different in multiple ways. First and foremost, the game takes a lot of gameplay elements from Metroidvanias such as finding upgrades to help you move around in the world better (such as accessories to let you breathe underwater) and increase your life and mana pools. You can also end up with multiple helpful NPCs near your base that will sell stuff to you, heal you, and otherwise enhance your base through their services. Terraria also features boss monsters that will challenge players who dare to summon them, and murder those who aren't ready. Finally, Terraria features a streamlined crafting system as well as numerous decorations so that you can truly make your home your own.

If you want a summary of all that: Minecraft's level generation + 2D Metroidvania gameplay = Terraria.

Redigit's youtube page can be found here, which includes a teaser, a trailer, and a Let's Play of the alpha done by the creators themselves.

Release date is this monday for 10$, my hunch the early release (originally June) is because of a leak and they want it out the door as soon as possible.

Welp, thats 10$ of my money going to a good cause.

The title is a meme as people despite some of the messier things leading up to the release only seem to want to know about buckets.

Edit:

Anyways some things I've learned, Indie developers really do sometimes need AAA studios to watch over them, these guys are making a great game but their security and PR sucks.

Basically 4chan is trolling the developers and they're having trouble dealing with it. Luckily SA seems to be giving them pointers and support.

My 17-year-old just asked me if she could get it. She's been playing Minecraft for some time and has played the alpha version of Terraria. She says she's "not really" playing WoW right now.

I'll check out the videos.
