That was fascinating. I still wonder though, in some situations where you actually haven't done anything wrong, wouldn't refusing to talk instigate the officer to press you harder?

Maybe. But you still are in a better legal position if you don't say anything.

A few people have tooled through state by state relevant law for talking to police and found that this guy's legal advice generally is only solidly true in some states but not others.
As a general rule, I guess they figured that you should take this guy's advice if you live in a (a) southern state, (b) Nevada, or (c) Arizona.
The reasoning being that NV and AZ have given brazenly overzealous powers to its police, and that many southern states have as well in addition to having much worse than average issues, precinct by precinct, with corrupt or unethical police and legal systems.
I don't know how much research was put into it? But, hey, "Don't talk to cops in the South" would be real unsurprising to put in the no duh category.

I suspect that for minor offenses (like traffic stops and whatnot) it pays to be friendly to cops.

Screw that, dig in, and invite your friends to move in. Brown folks have been in Arizona longer than white people, and the whites there best get over their insecurities.

The last thing I want to do at a traffic stop is annoy the officers. They can easily ruin my day by stretching out the process - or if they're really crooked, by "finding" something illegal in my car.
Horrible way to think, isn't it?

You can be polite and still not tell them anything. I mean Yes Sir, No Sir are polite but tell them nothing, at least for basic info.
If they get more detailed, then ask to see your lawyer.
I mean this for traffic stops. About any other reason, go for the lawyer.

Its more than that here, in certain places like Scottsdale police are much more likely to pull over and ticket crappy cars becuase they happen to be driven by lower class people, and yes sometimes without an actual moving violation. Growing up here Ive seen law enforcement persecute equally on class than race, it just so happens that a lower percentage of minorities are upper class. Our schools are underfunded most public elementary shools have resorted to sending home grocery lists of supplies expecting parents to buy them. Jan Brewer is removing more and more funding from medical programs, including the Arizona State Hospital that cared for her son due to his mental problems, A.S.H. hasnt had a juvenile ward for sometime now and any minor who is mentally unwell instead goes to juvie. Last year we got a 2% food tax that goes to the P.D. or else they would take that money away from public schools, we the people were essentially blackmailed. Arpaio and DA Andrew Thomas spent years wasting money and tolerance accusing and indicting Phoenix city officials who didnt play along with thier power grabbing.
Scottsdale, Tempe and smaller cities like Sun City prosper and provide the people better jobs and schooling but majority of Phoenix live below the poverty line not to mention the rest of Arizona which is even worse.

I went on a date with a really classy girl from Hawaii years ago. She informed me that she was pulled over at least a few times a week, and officers always assumed she was Hispanic. She was a really *really* nice girl, and that was the only topic I had encountered where she betrayed even a hint of resentment.
