So the other day I'm chatting with some friends on Vent, and another joins the channel and asks "What's up?"
I'm something of a smartass, so I replied "The sky."
He's a smartass too, to he shot back "Well then what's down?"
"The enemy's gate!"
I was so proud of myself for saying that. But he didn't get the reference, so I hadda tell him about Ender's Game and he immediately went to Amazon and ordered himself a copy. There's hope for him yet. . . .

I suppose you could answer "what's up" with "OUR army's gate" but that may be a bit obscure even for geeks.

I feel like I've read this thread before.

I think there actually was a thread some time ago on appropriate responses to "what's up" and small talk in general.

I had a similar experience. A friend went fishing and had extra perch that he gave me. He stopped by, handed me a bag of fish, and on the way out, I said "So long! And thanks for all the fish!"
No response. I was equally proud and disappointed.
