After slaving over this for 2 months, my acapella group finally released our second music video.

Check it out!!!

The Maccabeats: Candlelight

It's a spoof version of Taoi Cruz's Dynamite - Hanuka themed.

(I'm the first soloist)

Yeah. Yeshiva University has medical and law schools, but they are more like Jew-friendly (holidays and such). My experience at Fordham hasn't been very Catholic.

Tom - We sent it around to every Jewish music blog we knew - once it built up among Jews, and going viral on that level, we started sending it out to anyone and everyone. I have a friend who has a friend who works at Huffington Post.

JPost randomly contacted us, we didn't speak with them.

But today, the calls came in from NBC, CBS, CNN, NYPost, etc.

This is utter craziness. Thanks everyone for being so awesome! The best part of this is friends/family who are going through this with all of us. You don't know how much it means to me that I show up on hatrack and see a maccabeats thread. Blew my mind.

Why, do you suppose, they never mention "Light One Candle", in litany of Hanukkah songs? Perhaps it would interfere with their point that decent Hanukkah songs didn't exist until the past few years.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

Probably because "Light One Candle" isn't a very good song, and moreover is only obliquely about Hanukkah.

It has "Maccabee children" in the opening line; how much more direct of a connection do you want?

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

They're otherwise pretty much irrelevant to the lyrics. In fact, the song hints pretty strongly that no one else has to suffer like the Maccabee children did, because the great peacemaker has since come; I'm pretty sure that comes close to mocking the point of the holiday.

Either you don't know the words to the song or you have grossly misunderstood them. There is nothing in the song about how no one else needs to suffer because the great peacemaker has come. In fact, it says just the opposite in several places. The lyrics were written by a Jew and the message is on maintaining a personal obligation to create peace and justice. While the song does ask for "The wisdom to know when the peace makers time is at hand", the context makes it pretty clear that "peace maker" means "us".
Here is a link to the lyrics.

Key phrases include:

quote:
Light one candle for those who are suffering
The Pain we learned so long ago

quote:
What's the commitment to those who have died?
We cry out "they've not died in vain,"
We have come this far, always believing
That justice will somehow prevail;
This is the burden and This is the promise,
This is why we will not fail!

If the song isn't to your taste, fine, but don't make claims about the lyrics unless you've actually bothered to find out what they are.

Since the article went on and on about bad "obliquely Hanukkah songs like "I have a little dreidel", I don't see how this offers an explanation.

There are many good Chanukah songs.

They're just in Hebrew or Yiddish.

The average English-only speaker is not aware of "Light One Candle", Rabbit.

Really?? By "not aware" you must mean "not aware its about Hanukkah" not "never heard it". It's the only Hanukkah song I've ever heard played in public places. In places I've lived, its been part of the standard Holiday muzak, the token nod to the fact that Christmas isn't the only "Holiday" people celebrate.

I never heard "I have a little dreihdel" until this past week.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

IME (and this does come up in conversation regularly this time of year, both IRL and all the various places I am and have been online), people know the dreidel song, the Sandler song, and have a vague notion that there are some others but don't know any of them.

I have NEVER heard "Light One Candle" played on the radio or in the mall, although I did learn it in school as a child. It was one of the two English Chanukah songs we learned. [Wink]

Posted by The Rabbit (Member # 671) on :

I guess this is just one more evidence of how out of touch I am with pop culture.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

I just did an informal poll here in the office: I was the only one of sixteen people who'd heard "Light One Candle" at all, and that was only because I'd sung it once at a holiday event twenty years ago.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Tom, one assumes (hopes?) you had heard it prior to singing it, neh? [Wink]

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

I just listened to "Light One Candle," never heard it before. Sounded nice, though not particularly special, and I'll probably never hear it again.

We learned a couple Hanukkah songs when I was in elementary school, but I can't really remember them now. I always liked Hava Nagilah, it's catchy, but I don't think it's a holiday song.

It's really too bad there aren't more Jewish holiday songs. I know Jewish religious music can be beautiful, I've heard a lot of cantor music that blows my socks off, and moves me on a level, even though I have no idea what's being said, that 99% of Christmas music doesn't. I also wonder if there isn't something to be said for the benefits of not going mainstream/commercial like Christmas has. On the one hand, it has total commercial dominance over Hanukkah, but, it's also become a cheap, vapid plaything for corporations.

You realize now, of course, that I'm going to pester you for translations on all these now?

Edit to add: I like the first song in this video. I tried to find longer versions of it, assuming it's supposed to have a longer version, but there aren't any good ones. Sounds like a Russian/Eastern European folk song too, which might be part of what I like it so much.

Yes, I went to a Jewish Orthodox high school and we only knew of the Dreidel song and the Adam Sandler song.

I think you guys should be really proud of yourself.

Portraying the ancient practice in a friendly manner is from my perspective what might be termed (using Orthodox Jewish terminology) a "kidush to the Lord;" the exact phrase you likely know but I'd rather not write online.

Lyr, that's Yimei haChanukah, and I think it's actually Israeli, not European. That link has (a loose) translation and transliteration (and an American singing [Wink] ).

It also has an English version, but I rather prefer the Hebrew.

Shanna, it's hard to find the coverage from before the new video, but there was an article last year (two years ago?) that talked about where each of the members was from, and I do think one was from Houston.

Edit: found it!

And it would be the local Heights paper that answered my question: yes, that IS Ft. Tryon Park! [Wink]

There's an obvious solution to this. The problem, as I see it, is that OSC has pretty much given up signing tours. He almost never does signings anymore outside his home state or ones directly adjacent. (See this month's list, for instance.)

So what you need is Maccabeats fans in NC who want to bring y'all out for some event in NC that coincides with an OSC signing.

You know what's crazy?

4 years ago, OSC wrote about a group called "Straight No Chaser" that pretty much inspired me to commit as much as I did to my acapella group. SNC became really popular with a famous Christmas medley (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Fe11OlMiz8). It's insane to be here 4 years later...

Have you been to a book signing? It seems like something that would get really boring, really fast.
Since Card has done hundreds of them, I can't imagine they're still fun to him. Maybe his reasons are totally different, but that would be my thought.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

I think he actually enjoys the signings themselves (although they are exhausting). The traveling all over takes time and energy away from his family and his writing, and he told his publisher several years back he wasn't going to do it anymore.

It makes me sad that he doesn't do signings in L.A. anymore (it used to be one of the usual stops almost every tour), but I can completely understand the choice.

I don't think so. That's just based on the original Dynamite.

But it inspired me, so here's my ode to trolls:

Cyberblight
by Lisa Liel

I’ll tell a tale tale tale tale
Of cyberspace's biggest fail fail fail fail
When a talkback's getting stale stale stale stale
I take the comments off the rail rail rail rail
Yeah, yeah,

I'll yammer on and on and on
Until all sanity is gone
Yeah-eah

I like to troll the internet sometimes
Saying ayy ohh
I'm an a**hole
Just posting "First!" can make me feel so fine
And I never
Shut my pie hole

I say it's photoshopped
I say that he's a fag
I say that I hate Jews
I say she's on the rag

And when I get thrown off
Because I'm such a pain
I make a sock puppet
And I shout "First!" again

I like to troll troll troll troll
Getting reactions is my goal goal - goal goal
I irritate you to your soul soul soul soul
'Cause I have no constructive role role role role
Yeah, yeah,

I don't care how inane I sound
You'll never stop me comin' round
Yeah-eah

I like to troll the internet sometimes
Saying ayy ohh
I'm an a**hole
Being obnoxious makes me feel so fine
And I never
Shut my pie hole

I say the movie blows
I say that he can't act
I say their voices suck
I tell you that's a fact

And when you disagree
It's you that I'll attack
And if you get me banned
You know that I'll be back

It's a great temptation
To tell me just shut up and go away
But it's that frustration
That makes it worth my while just to stay

'Cause taunting you
Is all that I came here to do
(Don't feed the troll
Don't feed the troll)
When you acknowledge that I'm there
It shows me that you really care care care care care care...

[bridge]

I say it's photoshopped
I say that he's a fag
I say that I hate Jews
I say she's on the rag

And when you disagree

But Armoth is the writer. At least he wrote the lyrics. I have no idea who would be considered the publisher.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Co-wrote the lyrics.

Posted by El JT de Spang (Member # 7742) on :

He's not the original writer. Parody can be (and likely would be) given a derivative work copyright in this case. So Armoth would be a writer, along with the original writer(s). Either they or their publishing companies would likely hold the publishing. But since I doubt he registered the copyright or registered the work with a PRO before it blew up he's not going to get paid. And since the vast majority of the exposure if from youtube, he wouldn't have anyway.

In any case, it doesn't change my answer: the performers don't make money when a video is played on TV from the internet. If there's money to be made, it goes where I said it did.

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

(which there isn't when it's an internet video)
If they only show a clip, then there's no money to be made, but it has nothing to do with it being an internet video -- it's because using a clip in a news program is square cut fair use. For the full video, legally there needs to be a license involved (unless it is fair use -- but it wouldn't be for a typical news program). As an internet video, they only gave permission to the places they uploaded to to distribute it, plus whatever other permissions were in the ToS. Unless they allowed in those terms the sorts of massive redistribution by another source (in this case, a television broadcast), there needs to be a license for that.

Also, this is not the default legal state, just the typical contractual arrangement in the music business. Since I doubt there's such a set of contracts governing the production of the music video, anyone contributing creatively to the process (which is, presumably, everyone in the video, and probably a few other people) has at least some share of the copyright, and were any royalties accrued, would be due a share.

That's interesting. Can you source that, or point me in the direction where I can do some reading on my own. My knowledge of copyright with regards to video is pretty secondhand, and since I plan to do a music video or two in the future I'd definitely like to read up a bit.

Doesn't YouTube have pay accounts where they put up ads for videos with high view rates, and then pay the person posting the video?

Posted by El JT de Spang (Member # 7742) on :

They have what they call partner accounts, and the account owner gets paid a portion of the revenue from the ads on their videos. But they get no control over the ads.

And, last I heard, to have any hope of getting accepted into their partner account you need about 5000 subscribers and a lot of original content.

There's nothing particularly special about video copyright vs anything else. Copyright in a work is always, always, always owned by the people who created it, unless it is transferred under certain specific conditions: either work for hire (which has a very specific, narrow meaning), or a contract. Here's the relevant bit of US law: http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap2.html

Some important quotations:

quote:
(a) Initial Ownership. — Copyright in a work protected under this title vests initially in the author or authors of the work. The authors of a joint work are coowners of copyright in the work.
quote:
(c) Contributions to Collective Works. — Copyright in each separate contribution to a collective work is distinct from copyright in the collective work as a whole, and vests initially in the author of the contribution. In the absence of an express transfer of the copyright or of any rights under it, the owner of copyright in the collective work is presumed to have acquired only the privilege of reproducing and distributing the contribution as part of that particular collective work, any revision of that collective work, and any later collective work in the same series.

Now, there are some legally established clearinghouses (that interact with the mandatory licensing requirements unique to music) for rights typically associated with music and the like, that are intended to make it easier to secure rights and ensure payments, but any rights holder is legally able to obtain payments.

quote:
(2) For licenses granted under section 106(6), other than statutory licenses, such as for performances by interactive services or performances that exceed the sound recording performance complement —

(A) copyright owners of sound recordings affected by this section may designate common agents to act on their behalf to grant licenses and receive and remit royalty payments: Provided, That each copyright owner shall establish the royalty rates and material license terms and conditions unilaterally, that is, not in agreement, combination, or concert with other copyright owners of sound recordings

Note key words such as "may" and "unilaterally". This doesn't apply for their video, of course, but it does apply to the audio track treated separately. Now, many uses fall under the "statutory licenses" section above, but playing on a news broadcast wouldn't. In the case of a statutorily licensed playing, the payments are split up in a funny way, but the first split goes to the rights holders (who are, as related in the first quotation, whoever created the work or had the rights transferred to them):

quote:
(A) 50 percent of the receipts shall be paid to the copyright owner of the exclusive right under section 106(6) of this title to publicly perform a sound recording by means of a digital audio transmission.

That's only for sound recordings, note. Video copyright is just basic copyright, pretty much. Even sound recording copyright does not have much resemblance to what a lot of people in music and music recording think it is -- I've met a recording professor from IU who did not know that the performance right was nothing but a sub-right of copyright!

I watched. I actually thought John King and the other guy, whoever he was, were rude. They had you on, didn't really explain what the fuss was about, talked about football over you while you sang, and then at the very end sort of tacked on a question or two.

I thought the best interviews with you really played up the fact that 1. This phenomenon is great for Jews because of the excitement it causes, and the fun it brings to the holiday. 2. The song is actually educational, it tells a story of the holiday. 3. The personal story about you guys, the things you're studying, and the whirlwind out-of-nowhere aspect.

They barely introduced you, talked over you, and then asked you questions as an afterthought when they fool finished pretend break dancing.

On the other hand, you guys sounded great! It's amazing that you guys can manage to sound so great while singing in what looked like a pretty cold outdoor location.

That's what I love about it. Other than the sound and the performance, I mean. The fact that it's a Hanukkah song that actually mentions the war with the Greeks. Honestly, I can't think of a single other Hanukkah song that does that. And you managed it without it sounding bellicose, which I certainly never could have done.

You should be justifiably proud of what you've done, Armoth. I can't think of a single Hanukkah in my lifetime where there's been such incredible pirsumei nisa. Maybe ever, really.

I didn't say I agreed with it.

I don't. In fact, I had an interesting conversation about it with the person who pointed it out to me. I rather think the blogger has it completely backwards. (Actually, having since read some of his other blog posts, I think he has many things backwards.)

I still found it interesting.

Thanks. It WAS cold, and we can't understand why the various stations think it's so great to have us singing out in the cold...

Believe it or not, but out of all 4 live tv stations we did, (the 5th is WPIX tomorrow morning, but whatever), CNN was the least professional. They didn't really communicate well with one another, or with us, and they planned for that segment to be a lot shorter than it was. What you didn't see behind the camera was the camera man signaling the bald guy to go much longer on the segment, which is why I got interviewed, and why Uri was brought in and then out.

It bothers me tremendously, because I feel like if they knew us, as individuals, they would know we are sincere in our Judaism. But, of course, when you're dealing with 2.3 million people, you're bound to bother someone...

The last on-air I did was in Sacramento. Our call time was 6am, and we played at 7am. After having four hours of sleep and setting up in the cold, it was not the ideal time to play. I definitely sounded exactly as I would've expected, and I'm the only one singing when I play.

One of us is interviewing for a radio station in Utah at 4:15. I feel like it would be the perfect place for a hatrack shoutout, unfortunately, Uri might be doing the interview.

Re: youtube comments. It isn't so much youtube as it is bloggers in the Jewish world. I mean that it that world, response has been positive, but there are certain people who are anti.

Yerachmiel Begun (The head of the Miami Boys Choir, a big established choir in Jewish music) used to love us. Now, he sent an email to all the major Jewish blogs as for them to take down our video because he watched Taio Cruz's dynamite and it sickened him, and he is upset that we are penetrating Jewish culture with evil disgusting values.

I find it absurd that he didn't think about the fact that our video is perfectly clean, but then again, he attached the Taio Cruz video to SHOW all the Jewish bloggers how pornagraphic the original video was...so...yay logic...

It's unfortunate that some Jews are being so irrationally negative but probably not surprising. Given that there is controversy among Jewish groups over how much secular culture is acceptable and that your group is more liberal (if that's the correct term) in this respect than many, it's sort of expected that some people are going to hate on you.

A better question: why on Earth should anybody who isn't you or JB care about what your post from nearly a year ago said, given that you decided to complain about it after all this time?

Shocking speculation: it involved Lisa, Judaism, Israel, or some blend of the three and was deemed offensive enough to warrant removal. I don't know where I come up with something crazy like that.

But that's just guessing-I don't actually know. Another good question: why should anyone believe you're doing anything but spitefully stirring up trouble by complaining about a post moderation nearly a year after the fact?

Sheesh.

I wasn't asking about the abstract, I was asking about this particular case. 'Care about injustice!' is a suitably vague, grandiose statement that no one can argue against it-you don't even have to prove the elements within it (which, notably, you haven't).

Another thing: when one person, known for screwing with the community at large and individuals within it, does something that smacks of manipulation, people should suspect manipulation.

Lazy and hypocritical, no.
High-handed and obstinant, yes.

Oh, man, I haven't snort-laughed out loud for a forum gag in awhile! 'Obstinant' is really subjective, but 'high-handed'? Can you point to anything, anywhere, that would characterize either him or his moderation as high-handed? I think if you asked around, you'd be-amazing!-completely alone there.

But then it's not like you're being honest in the first place, hence the gag!

Re-post it. See what happens.

He was nice enough not to edit your post to correct your spelling of "obstinate," which a more high-handed moderator might have done. [Big Grin]

Posted by Ace of Spades (Member # 2256) on :

That would be pedantic.

High-handedly pedantic!

Or pedantically high-handed...

There was a post that was deleted from another thread on February 23, that may have been construed as abusive.

This one, no way.

And your word on whether or not your own posts are infractions is good enough...why?

Armoth - my wife and I were talking about your videos recently (since this thread came back out of obscurity!) and we were wondering something...

I think I read somewhere (either in this thread or one of the linked articles) that Maccabeats was a university music group...does that mean that the group has yearly turnover as one class graduates and another comes in?

Posted by Armoth (Member # 4752) on :

We originated as a university group. Currently, you have to be a student or an alumnus of Yeshiva University to join. We've taken on new members every year, except for this one (because, at this point, no one is leaving...)

Since the Maccabeats did well, two other acapella groups have sprung up at Yeshiva University, so we feel like we've passed on the torch.

Because.

That's about as good a reason as anything you say!

(This is fun-whine some more, AoS! [Smile] )

I am being "honest". My post was in no way inappropriate and it should not have been deleted.

Armoth: Just to let you know, I think someone is mining your YouTube subscribees - I've been invited to be friends with two Jewish channels on YouTube. They are SalomonSaysVideo and LoriAlmostLiveVideo. The only connection I can figure is that I'm subscribed to the Maccabeats.

Posted by Armoth (Member # 4752) on :

Thanks - How does one deal with that?

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Considering those are probably (from the names) Aish videos, I vote for "be honored". [Wink]

Posted by CaySedai (Member # 6459) on :

If I had a YouTube channel, I would contact the people using my list and ask them nicely to stop.

I guess I (as the invitee) could contact them and let them know that not everyone who subscribes to the Maccabeats is Jewish ...

I am certain they know this.

lol - i just got a friend request.

It's not new to us. The second our video did very well, other Jewish groups that wanted the same viral quality have been hounding us. Every new Jewish thing gets posted on our facebook wall (which I promptly delete). And they even post their videos in comments in our videos.

It's now a popular way to advertise your video as: "Maccabeats are old news - this is better"

or "Better than Maccabeats!!!"

Which...i find hurtful...cuz, u know, i'm not a brand. I'm a person.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

Would it really be better if the tagline was "Better than Armoth, who's totally a person!"?

Posted by Armoth (Member # 4752) on :

You know what I'm saying. There are real people behind this stuff, and you hurt their feelings when you divorce their brand from their personhood.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

You are absolutely right. Nonetheless, you would be well advised to try not to take this sort of thing so personally.

Posted by Armoth (Member # 4752) on :

I'm not taking it SO personally. It's just a unique perspective that I'm sharing with friends.

Funny timing, I meant to look this thread up.

I had no idea the Maccabeats were on Spotify! It was suggested to me today. Got to relisten to a lot of old favorites.

I also thought of you guys because the Sing-Off just started again, and I'm sad you never made it onto the show.

Man how did I miss this thread for so long? The video is great! Great job on it, Armoth. I can't believe you have 9 million views. That's crazy!
