Why do some electrical plugs have holes in them and some don't? Is it just to save that teeny bit of metal? That seems unlikely.

I've seen this question elsewhere, and the most common answer I've seen is "nobody has a clue."

Older plugs had gripping textures in them, and the holes and/or bumps on the prongs would help them stay plugged in bettter.
