We are one of ten finalists for Parenting's Family Road Trip. You can vote for us here. I believe you can come back to vote daily. Please help us win! Voting goes for one month. Thanks!

<Rummages through virtual closet, pulls out mop.>

Janitor edit -- they've updated the "official" rules, and told us to have people vote as much as they want. Other families are not slowing down, so we need all the help we can get!

Thank you!!!

Janitor edit 2 -- subject change. And again, thank you all!

Thank you all for voting, including any of you who didn't post that you did. Although I've been taking a little time away, I do still think of this place as family.

Earlier it didn't seem to be allowing multiple voting -- you could hit vote, but the number didn't change. That doesn't seem to be the case any more. Y'know, just sayin'.

Just got an e-mail from the contact at Parenting (I did not write to ask, but I bet someone did).

quote:
Hi!

I just wanted to send out an update to let you know that as of today, please encourage people to vote as many times as they can. We originally set the voting up as one time per day, per IP address, but starting this week we are allowing people to vote as often as possible. The number shown on the page is sometimes not updated immediately after refresh, as a result of browser-side caching, however, the votes will be counted as long as the users successfully complete the captcha. Again, the voting will be live until 11/16.

Hope this helps clear up any confusion and good luck to your family!

Thanks!

Feel free to vote as many times as you can!

I'm seriously considering a stiff ban for this offense! [Wink]

The Meeses are indeed ahead, I vote in clumps throughout the day. I think our strategy should be to vote so much we demoralize the opposition and persuade them to discontinue.

I, um, may have voted for an hour and a half straight last night while listening to podcasts. I know other people put some serious time in, too. If you have a backlog of radio shows you've been meaning to listen to or something, it's fairly easy to knock out a bunch of votes without feeling like you're wasting your time.

I responded. It shows up under all of the families, though -- all comments do.

I did not identify the Meeses by name, and I suspect they would prefer it that way. I also suspect they would prefer us to avoid dogpiling or gettin' into fights in the comments (spitballs, haymakers, and pigtails into inkwells included [Smile] ). Y'all can make your own decisions, of course, but I would hate to see this become a burden them in any way.

Voted once...

Every year I throw away my WA absentee ballot...I'm now a FL resident. I could vote in two states if I wanted to. I tried to get WA to stop sending me the ballot. Unfortunately, I need to show up in person, on the other side of the country, to get them to stop. On second thought,....maybe I should vote twice.

Posted by Strider (Member # 1807) on :

How long does voting go on for this?

I think it'd probably be a good idea to take it easy on the voting for a bit. They have almost double the votes of anyone else and it may just be adding insult to injury to keep piling them on.

We can periodically check the standing of other contestants, but barring any spectacular surges on their parts, I'd suggest just sitting back for a bit.

Posted by CT (Member # 8342) on :

Oh, I don't know. I suppose it's one way to go.

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

The troubling part is the family now at 7k got there in less than half the time it took the Meese to get to 14k.

Posted by theamazeeaz (Member # 6970) on :

Well, I guess they had the good sense to swap out their Disney World picture when shilling for a free trip.

Posted by DDDaysh (Member # 9499) on :

Is that the family that had a DW pic? I was wondering, because I didn't see any when I was flipping through.

I keep voting periodically. I don't think it hurts anything. This isn't like a little league game or something. Another family might suddenly get a huge voting surge, so you want to be sure!

Posted by Belle (Member # 2314) on :

Well I obviously can't stop anyone from voting, and I'm not demanding that everyone stop all voting! I just don't see a practical reason to keep doing it at the level we have. It doesn't seem to be in the spirit of Hatrack to so blatantly make a show of dominating the competition. I understand we all want the Moose family to win, this is not a ploy to lull us into complacency so the other family can pull ahead, just a comment on how the competition has progressed. But again, my viewpoint on voting etiquette is certainly no objective fact!

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Strider, given how quickly the #9 family has pulled from less than 100 votes to well over 7000, I suggest complacency would be a bad move.

Posted by CT (Member # 8342) on :

Yep. "How the competition has progressed" is "often by startling leaps."

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

Thirded. And that includes our leap from far behind family #3 to caught up in one night. I'd rather keep as big a lead as possible to make it unlike that another family can overtake us if they get a large group of people voting for them for the last five hours straight or something.

Posted by The Rabbit (Member # 671) on :

Agreed. Nov. 15th is still a ways off and there is plenty of time for other familes to organize and move ahead. In my mind, the best way to combat accusations of foul play is for the Meese family vote to increase at a more or less steady rate over the next 3 weeks with votes coming from as many different regions as possible.

The bigger their lead is, the less likely it is for some other family to organize a big push to boot them out of the lead. Plus, I'd much rather pop by to vote a few times a day over the next few weeks, than spend a marathon session trying to bump them into the winning position at the last moment.

Voted a couple dozen times during the football game.

I kind of agree that we should continue at the pace we've been going at. That family might be 7K behind, but they're coming on with a fury, and I have no problem cushioning a lead.

And I liked your response to the complainers CT. It was succinct and graceful. Well said.

Posted by The Rabbit (Member # 671) on :

sndrake beat me to the punch. Even with a sizable lead, its hard to feel comfortable when other familes suddenly surge forward several thousand votes.

I think what this community has to offer is staying power. We have a group of people who work on computers most of the day and can vote 10 or more times a day with ease. A spot on the local news will garner a flurry of voters we can't match, but how many of those people will come back day after day to keep the total growing?

See this link for a couple of speed voting strategies.

I am up to a rate of over 5 votes/minute (and more fun than single clickthroughs), while someone else has found a way to do 10/minute.

We are at 29,212. Family 2 is at 15,818 and closing fast.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

I was doing the back arrow one after hitting enter myself, and was at about 6-7 a min. I don't type particularly fast though.

The current count stands at 16052 for family #2 and 29944 for the Meese.

We've added 732 votes in the time it took them to add 244. Keep up the good work.

to be fair, I didn't do all of them -- I took a few minutes to clear my cache because the new numbers weren't popping up. Did maybe half, though.

Come join me, guys! I'll be going full steam for the next half hour, and it's fun to see the counter jump.

Our main competition continues to ride it hard.

Added: Wonderful! We went from 35,177 to 35,556 in 1/2 hour. That's a gain of 379 points, or more than 10 a minute.

We are now more than double family #2. Woot.

Does anyone know how captchas work? Do they allow alternate spellings when the characters are hard to recognize? There have been times when I've peered at it saying, "is that a double L or an H?" or "are those two parallel dashes supposed to be a z?" and make my best guess and it accepts my entry. I just wonder if someone has figured out that there can be more than one way to look at the image and programmed in more than one way to spell the words.

Posted by The Rabbit (Member # 671) on :

In a two work Captcha, only one of the two words is actually used to determine if you are human, the second one is part of project to digitize old print books, newspapers and magazines.

link

If you make any errors in the word that's actually being used to check if you are human, your vote is rejected. You can make major errors in the other word, even type nothing at all (if its the second word), and your vote will still be accepted. As best I can tell, the program alternates whether the first or second word is part of the digital library project/

Considering some of the "words" I've seen, I'm terrified to think about what we may be transcribing.

Cool. I was wondering why I was screwing up some of the words and it still took it. as well as why some words had commas and French accents. I'll have to be sure to type them in. :-)

It's looking pretty good, but just for fun and to be on the safe side, it's been suggested that we see how many votes we can register the evening of 11/15, which is the last day of voting. If you've got some time next Monday, spend it voting!

Yep. I was working the last 4 days, and at a place with no internet connections. I'll make it up the rest of the week though.

I voted a few more times last night - I try to vote at least 5-10 times a day and sometimes I am able to up that.

I think we are in a good position. I can't wait to hear all the stories from the Moose road trip!! [Smile]

I am so proud of this site, and I hope our lead holds up. The Meeses deserve this, and it feels good helping them get it.

It appears that voting has closed at midnight EST, and unless something unusual happens/happened, we would appear to have received the most votes by far.

Thank you again, folks, for your continuing kindness to us. There's a reason we've always thought of Hatrack as another branch of our family. (No, sorry, that doesn't mean you all go on the trip with us if we do win. Sorry.) As we learn more of the results, and what exactly the might entail for us, we'll update you all.

--Pop

[Edit -- looks like they made it official! We won!]

[Party] [Party] [Party]

So um, you won't by any chance be taking your vacation to some place where you might have a hatrack party?

I know you won't be coming near me. There are no "road trips" to Trinidad even if you should decide you wanted to drive this far. But it would be kind of cool if some of the gang who've been voting like mad might be able to meet you at some point on your road trip.

Posted by Belle (Member # 2314) on :

Yay! I feel really good about this.

I can't wait to hear stories and see photos of the trip. [Smile]

(In case anyone goes to the site and sees we're not identified as the winners any more -- turns out it's not official until we send in a notarized affidavit/release, so they pulled the announcement that their IT department had on a timer. It isn't that we didn't win, just that it's not officially official yet.)

It's still showing you as the 2011 winner on the link above.

I am so happy for you and your family, and I a glad that I got into and helped as much as I can. Several of my family members said they voted multiple times as well, although not as much as we did ourselves. [Big Grin]

I am so proud of the people who helped them win, I think it is a wonderful thing....both for the Meeses and for the community here at Hatrack. [Big Grin]

Florida's also a very long road trip when you are starting in CA and have 4 kids in the car. Last years "Family Road Trip" lasted 6 days and I don't suspect that 24 hours a day of driving is either what the Meeses or Parenting magazines sponsors want.

Yes, they re-officialed the unofficialness once they received our release/affidavit. We spoke with a few people from the magazine this morning to share some of our family's interests and ideas, plus some brands of products we use (the trip is way sponsored), and we'll continue to go forward. I don't know how much more they'll be asking us, or if they'll just decide on stuff for us to do or whatever. We're going to have a good time.

And again, thank you for voting for us. We couldn't have done this without the support of family and friends all over the place.

Florida is too far, much as we'd like to visit. Just sayin'.

The local newspaper posted an article here. Not sure I would've started it off the way they did, but I guess it makes it more newsish than just announcing the win. It's interesting to see which parts of what we said made it into the article, too.

They got the timeline wrong too, neh?

Nice pictures, though. [Smile]

And Mama's age, and a couple other not-entirely-accurate restatements of things we said, but it's close enough for government work.

If I could get a government job, that is.... *smile*

ETA: I was originally thinking that it was strange that they'd choose the blurry photo for the first one, but after thinking about it, our life seems sometimes like the kids are going a million miles an hour while we stand still, so I think it grew on me pretty quickly.

So we don't have details, but we got this e-mail today:
quote:
Happy Friday winners of our family road trip!
We hope you’re excited—it’ll be here in a zip!

Your trip is finally coming together,
I know it feels like it’s taken forever!

You’ll be driving an Audi Q7 up Highway One,
While DVDs and games will provide road trip fun!

In Safety 1st car seats the kids will ride,
Onto our next stop—San Simeon’s pride.

To San Diego we will go,
But not before we hit the snow.

Pack your mittens, boots and winter wear,
You’ll enjoy your first time skiing—we swear!

Your Panasonic camera will capture memories,
Maybe whales, penguins and manatees??

Before we head back to your house,
You’ll spend some time with America’s favorite mouse.

We can’t wait to meet you and hope you liked our rhyme,
Be prepared for the trip of a lifetime!

So... Hearst Castle, skiing, Sea World, and Disney, from what we can tell. How much time in-between or what else might get squeezed in there, we don't know. But we're gonna have fun!

Oh that's so awesome! It sounds exhausting, but I'm sure your kids will all have a blast! Who gets to do all the driving?

Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :

I'll probably do most of the driving, but Mama will certainly get her chance behind the wheel. And she might drive the curvier roads on Hwy 1 and in the mountains because she's more likely to get carsick.

Don't have more specifics yet, but we now know that the "six-day" trip will be nine days long, undoubtedly because there was too much awesomeness to fit into only six! Woohoo!

Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :

Cross-posted:

Aaaah!!!

(Stressing over all these last-minute packing things.  And Mama's stressing more, because she's the competent one.)

The car is pretty dang sweet, but yes, fitting everything is gonna be a problem (read: not happening).  I think some of our stuff is gonna go in the chaperones' car.

I don't know how quickly they'll be updating the blog, but it's here.  And our chaperones are tweeting at @TPG_FamRoadTrip (whatever the heck one does with that -- we're not twitterererers).
