I know things are slow at Hatrack, but, really, no thread yet?

Anyone pumped for the US v. England game this Saturday? Our respective ambassadors are. Most odds I see have England winning at 40 - 60%, a tie at 40 - 20%, and the US winning at 20%. So, we're the underdogs, but not by too much, really. Our defense is shaky, but England looked kinda sad playing a second-rate regional South African team a couple of days ago, and the England manager was mad.

I was reading an excellent story the other day on the background history of the area around where the USA-England match is going to take place. I'll see if I can find and post it later. It was all about how they had their land stolen, but managed to buy it back through a white intermediary, then almost had it stolen again when more than half the world's platinum was discovered underneath it. Now they use their platinum wealth in an amazingly corrupt-free way to raise up the villages, and also on projects like building the stadium that the game will be played in to help raise their profile and bring in investments into the area. They're seen as a model for what other resource rich developing areas can do.

Oh, and the soccer game sounds exciting too. [Smile]

I caught part of the England friendly, and it sounded as though the roster hadn't yet been finalized. It seems like a weird decision for the manager. You need to give the team playing time together for them to gel.

Anyone catch the US Australia friendly?

I'm looking forward to it, although it's too bad about Ferdinand's knee injury. Glad Jozy Altidore's injury wasn't more serious.

Hopefully the US will at least make it out of Group play this year (even if it is just for a second round loss to Germany).

I am soooooo unbelievabley excited for this world cup. I've got a gut feeling Brazil will take it all. Luis Fabiano is a goalscoring machine. Spain are the favorites, but for some reason I don't see it possible for them to win.

As far as the USA vs England game, it's a hard call. both of our defences are quite shaky, and I really hope Onyewu is fit for a full 90 minutes. If we start Findley or Buddle up front with Altidore, either one will run Ledley King to death.

I'm just terriffied of Rooney. Sometimes that man seems posessed to score. Lennon is quick, but as long as he stays outside, Captain Fantastic Bocanegra can handle him. (I know this is hopeful thinking, and we'll prbably lose, but go USA!)

Professional soccer = something I could talk about for hours and hours

Heathen! Speaking lies! I shun thee!

Most amusing thing of the World Cup is my father. He's 84+ years old, and one of the calmest, down-to-Earth people I know. But sit him in front of a soccer game where Spain is involved (specifically the team from Barcelona), and he turns in to a lunatic, screaming at the TV and flailing around.

If you want a wallchart to print out, check this out:

http://www.worldcupblog.org/wc_wall.pdf

It has all of the game times, brackets, etc.

I was not a huge soccer fan growing up, but got really into it when I lived in Brasil. My wife is European and is into it as well. I usually root for the US and Brasil, she usually cheers for Germany (since Albania never makes the cut).

I can't wait for Friday! I'll be at work duing the first couple of games, but Saturday is going to be spent at home and at an English bar (with an English co-worker of mine) watching the game and sipping O'Douls.

I'll be arriving in Beijing on Friday, I really want to keep up with the cup this time around, I just hope my class schedule permits that.

We're headed to an Irish pub on Saturday, Geraine, with the idea that they've gotta support the US over England. So far, my favorite (non-offensive) chant for the US v. England game is:

Where oh where is your empire now?
Oh where oh were could it be?
When we Yanks gave the boot
Did the rest follow suit?
Oh where oh where could it be?

Of course, this being soccer, there are a whole boatload of offensive chants. I hope the US fans in the stage can give us something more than "U! S! A! U! S! A!".

I'm also just excited to watch all of the other games. If I lived in DC proper rather than suburbia, I'd probably be heading to a bar every morning before work to catch the first game.

I'm really excited about the World Cup! My family is from Mexico but my older sister and I were born in LA. Growing up it was all about soccer, my dad is a huge Chivas fan. Obviously I'm going for Mexico, but I'm realistic, they won't get far. I love them and I hope that they do win some. BUT COME ON first game and they're playing the home team!

Regardless I'll be wearing my Mexican jersey and I already bought one for my two year old daughter. VIVA MEXICO!

I know next to nothing about soccer. I'd cheer for the USA out of national pride before, but since I've been married and I love my wife more than my country, VIVA MEXICO!

I have to root against mexico, but they do have 3 good players I like watching.

Gabriel Ochoa is a great young goalkeeper (who may make some youthful mistakes)

Carlos Vela annd Dos Santos are two skillful dynamic forwards. It's their defense I'm not confident about. I see Uruguay getting first in the group, but Mexico could upset an underperforming France.

Germany's got a pretty solid squad this year, as well. I'd like to see Argentina win it this time, but it's gonna be rough.

Posted by LargeTuna (Member # 10512) on :

I'm not confident Maradonna is exactly the type of coach that can win it for them. There's no doubt they have one of the best if not the best attacks in the tournament (Messi, Higuain, Tevez, Di Maria).

I just think they have the wrong man in place. He's an egotistical maniac, no matter how wonderful a player he was. I think they could get far, but the only way they could beat the likes of Brazil or Spain is if one Lionel Messi conjures some footballing magic, which we know he is capable of.

Posted by Eduardo_Sauron (Member # 5827) on :

I think we (Brazil) reign supreme once more and take it for the 6th time. It would be nice smashing Argentina to pieces while we're at it :-)

Posted by natural_mystic (Member # 11760) on :

This is the first WC in quite some time when I don't think Brazil have an obviously more talented squad than everyone else (perhaps France in '02 the last time?). That being said, I have them winning it all. I think they have sufficient athleticism and discipline that they can frustrate Spain, and then they're absolutely lethal on the counter.

Argentina is extremely talented, but I see two problems - Maradona and the absence of a Xavi/Xabi type to move the ball quickly from deep, making it easier for teams to park the bus. In theory Veron should be able to play this role, but I've not seen him do it since his Lazio days (I don't watch Clausura, and I gather he has had something of a re-birth, so we shall see).

This morning I saw the video release with the 2010 anthem, and I think it's pretty catchy. Here's a remix with a lot of fine moments from previous matches.

Anyone watching the first half of the SA/Mex game?

The ESPN announcers seemed pretty confused about the offsides call (that negated a Mexico goal), but my understanding of the rule is that there must be two opposing players between an attacker and the goal; one is usually the goalie, but in this case the goalie wasn't between the attacker and the goal, so there was only a single defender. Wonder if they'll clear it up during the half.

Posted by LargeTuna (Member # 10512) on :

Yeah that's what I thought the rule was too. If so, then that's an amazingly cood call by the officials.

I'm rooting for South Africa, but I've got a sneaky feeling that Carlos Vela is going to score for real. Franco has missed a lot of chances, and I personally wouldn't keep him in the whole game. I'd sub in Guardado or someone.

I was surprised Ochoa didn't start. He's a better keeper than what they got now tbh. Except for corners, Mexico look pretty dominant.

Posted by SenojRetep (Member # 8614) on :

I wasn't really invested, but I'm glad Mexico equalized. Despite a few nice looks by the South Africans, I would say Mexico outplayed them for most of the 90 minutes.

Miami has essentially shut down today; everywhere you went the game was on. I could probably go in to the local bar, steal an entire pool table, and nobody would notice until half-time.

I imagine it will be like that for the next month.

I watched France-Uraguay this morning, and was reminded why it's hard for me to get too excited. Hour and a half of game ending in a 0-0 tie is boring.

Playing soccer is fun. Watching can be a real drag.

Posted by Juxtapose (Member # 8837) on :

I thought the ending of that game was really tense. It really seemed like France could have scored given the smallest opportunity. Uruguay did well not to give it to them.

Posted by Eduardo_Sauron (Member # 5827) on :

You see... France X Uruguay wasn't a soccer game. It's something that looks like the real deal, but isn't quite like it.

Posted by MightyCow (Member # 9253) on :

I think the problem is that some games can be super fun and exciting, while some are boring as heck, and you don't know for sure, so you have to invest a significan time watching a lame game that may never get good.

Posted by MightyCow (Member # 9253) on :

US - Eng is pretty good so far. US isn't playng especially well, but since England's keeper took a short nap and gave us a freebie, the second half might be pretty interesting.

Posted by Black Fox (Member # 1986) on :

For me, I love football for the love of the game ( and when I say football I mean soccer folks). Even when there isn't a lot of scoring going on, watching the flow of the game is great fun. Even a 0-0 gaming can be extremely fun to watch. For me, its generally obvious within the first 10 minutes or so if it will be worth watching. That and come on, look at most other sports. About the only American game that really gives immediate gratification is basketball.

Robert Green was a hero today. (Pity it was for the wrong side.)

Posted by LargeTuna (Member # 10512) on :

Now I'm just hoping Arsenal don't go out and sign Robert Green after a performance like that. We seem to have a habit of starting underperforming keepers.

I think it's clear that when the 2 men of the match (Tim Howard and Steve Cherundelo) are both American, and both may very well be better players than their English counterparts (Green and Johnson) that USA were going to at least get a draw. Demerit man marked Rooney with far too much ease, and Michael Bradley proved himself a box to box midfielder. it was always going to come down to defensive mistakes with both of these teams.

assuming they both win their remaining games, the battle for goal differencial could be quite fun.

Posted by Juxtapose (Member # 8837) on :

Capello's decision-making continues to baffle me. He didn't pick his keeper until two hours before the match. Granted, he didn't have stellar picks, but that just makes it all the more important for him to pick a starter and stand behind him. So, SO much of good goalkeeping is about confidence. It doesn't excuse Green's blunder, but nervousness is what causes those kinds of mistakes.

No big games tonight, but Australia plays Germany tomorrow (my time) I'll try to catch that one if I can. I'm sure Germany will win, but I don't think Australia will allow the Germans to stomp them.

Posted by Flaming Toad on a Stick (Member # 9302) on :

Australia just got stomped, and they lost their best striker to a straight red card in the process. I'm wondering what they've got left to muster against Ghana.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

Gah I misread the time for the game, I must have slept through it. Oh well, 4-0 doesn't sound like a very fun game to watch. Australia let me down!

Posted by LargeTuna (Member # 10512) on :

I just sure hope USA can manage to get top of the group. The Germans look like they're going to trounce anyone in their way at this point.

Philip Lahm proved why he's one of the best wingbacks in the world, and the German players who had poor club seasons did the usual and performed well for their country.

Klose should wear a Germany jersey under his Bayern Munich kit so he can always score.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

Indeed, I do wish I could see video of the whole Per Mertesacker hand hitting the ball incident though. Also it seemed like Australia was giving a good go at it but when they lost Cahill the front gate was breached and a 2-0 solid win turned into a 4-0 route.

So, Italy vs. Paraguay in a few minutes.

For those who might not know, Paraguay's star striker was shot in the head in January. He survived, luckily, and is expected to recover.

I guess we'll see what kind of offense Paraguay can mount in his absence.

Posted by Juxtapose (Member # 8837) on :

Paraguay just shocked Italy with a beautiful header off a set piece. Italy's defense seemed very lax.

Holy Crap! New Zealand just equalized with about 1 minute left in stoppage time. The Slovakian coach looks so crestfallen :\.

N Korea (!) has held Brazil scoreless through 54'!

What is the world coming to!?

Actually, prior to the start of group play I heard that this is exactly N. Korea's strategy; no offense, all defense, play for the 0-0 tie. It seems to be working better than I anticipated it would.

<edit>Brazil scored while I was posting that; now it's 1-0.</edit>

Very frustrating, the US had so many opportunities and couldn't capitalize on them, whereas Slovenia has had something like two maybe three and scored twice.

Ok, that was ridiculous! Why was the third US goal disallowed? Nobody seems to know, not on Eurosport, not on the French TV channel... I hate seeing games decided by stupid referee decisions. [Frown]

Corwin: No kidding, I still can't make heads nor tails of it.

It should have been 4-2 (and that called off goal is an embarrassment for the ref; it was the second blown call on a US challenge in the box of the game), but I'm just relieved we managed to fight back to the draw.

Here's hoping we can roundly beat Algeria, and that England performs to its capability in its two remaining group matches.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

I guess I should be happy we got a draw. Germany was stomped by Serbia. I'm sure prior to the game the Germans were trying to decide by how many goals a piece the strikers and midfielders would get.

We need need need England to win their next two matches.

USA won that game, somehow that ref just decided he didn't want USA to win.

final score, 2-2 [Cry]

I've seen only the final few minutes of the match as I got home from work, so I don't know how it could have been 4 for the US.

Anyway the French commentators were appalled by the decision on the third goal. They were showing replays after replays and there was no visible reason to disallow the goal. But it's done and the US will unfortunately have to live with it.

Posted by Corwin (Member # 5705) on :

Ok, French Eurosport says that the referee signaled an offside position on the 3rd US goal. Of course no US player was offside... I wish they allowed video replays in cases like this. No, more, I wish they *required* video replays when cancelling goals!

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

I know it was called off-sides but why on earth would the ref be making that call from behind the action instead of relying on the linesmen?

Actually, I think we're in pretty good shape (although we should be in better shape - stupid official). As long as we beat Algeria, we have a good chance of getting through. We definitely want to score as many goals as possible, just in case advancement comes down to tie breaks.

There were two or three solid scoring opportunities for the US around the 40th minute, including a strike that was whistled dead inside the Slovenian box. The ref (erroneously) called a handball on Finley, stopping a dangerous strike and knocking Finley out of the Algeria game next week.

Wow! Algeria holds England to a 0-0 tie!

So after two group games, Slovenia leads with 4 pts, US and England are tied with 2 and Algeria has 1.

Ways for the US to advance:
1) US beats Algeria
2) US draws Algeria and Slovenia beats England
3) US draws Algeria and England draws Slovenia and US wins on goal scored differential (or if goal scored differential is equal, wins the straw draw)

Despite England's struggles with Algeria, I feel pretty good about the US's chances.

Posted by Jhai (Member # 5633) on :

Man, England just played like crap today.

Of the 21 people in our office pool, I think there have been 5 right calls across the three games today. At least everyone is down together.

Posted by Risuena (Member # 2924) on :

Deadspin has a pretty good write up of how the US can advance and what the different tie break rules are for the group round.

Warning though, Deadspin can be more that a little salty, I don't think there's anything inappropriate in the blog post itself, but there probably is in the comments.

Posted by LargeTuna (Member # 10512) on :

I just want to finish in whichever part of the group that doesn't have to play Germany. Even with what Serbia did to them.

but most importantly, we simply need to bear Algeria. the rest will work itself out.

Posted by SenojRetep (Member # 8614) on :

The other question is whether the US can take first in the group. To do so they would necessarily need to beat Algeria. Then there are two possible paths to taking first in group:

Path 1 (England beats Slovenia): In this path England and US tie in points, and since they both drew their first two matches, the first tiebreaker would be who won their final game by the biggest differential. If they win by the same differential, then it would go to goals scored. Currently the US has 3 and England has 1, so this favors the US. But if the two games end up, say 1-0 and 3-2, this would be tied as well. The remaining tiebreakers are all tied so it would devolve to a random draw.

Path 2 (England draws Slovenia): In this case the US would tie Slovenia for first on points. The first tiebreaker would be goal differential. Slovenia would be +1, so if the US wins by more than a goal over Algeria then they win the group. If not, the second tiebreaker is goals scored, which is currently tied 3-3. If that remains tied (say US wins 2-1 and Slovenia draws 2-2), then the other three tiebreakers are tied as well and we'd go to a random draw to decide the winner of the group.

<edit>Although, with the current state of Group D it's not clear whether the US should want to win their group. If Ghana ends up winning Group D and Germany or Serbia comes in second, the US may very well be better off not winning the group and facing Ghana (who has a slightly lower FIFA ranking and SPI) in the round of 16.</edit>

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

That second yellow card for Kaka was really lame. I don't like ref's handing out yellow cards when they didn't even see what happened. Why can't the ref consult with a lineman or somebody who saw what happened before ruling? Or is there just not enough time for that? Being able to consult a replay when it comes to handing out a second yellow i.e a red seems to be the least that could be done.

Posted by LargeTuna (Member # 10512) on :

It was a poor call, during, what I would say was a tough game to call. A combination of Ivory Coast making physical tackles, and Brazilian players diving here and there.

A slightly extended arm while not in motion just isn't a yellow card. However, I don't see it hurting Brazil all of that much. Robinho can slot into that playmaker role, and Nilmar can start on the left wing. They may even play better.

I'd be more worried about Elano. I don't know how bad his injury was, but Alves is not the precision finisher he is, even if he's faster and plays for a more glamorous club.

I'm enjoying this cup way too much! [Big Grin]

What a nailbiter! So glad we're through, despite having another good goal ruled out earlier in the game. Let's hope the refs don't continue that tradition for a third game - we can't afford that against whoever ends up second in Group D.

Geraine, most everyone in our office is secretly watching a stream live on ESPN3. After the goal was scored there was a huge shout 'round the office.

I think it's awesome we're all talking about what we were doing and where we were when "The Goal" was scored. I was in my dorm room trying to study and watch the game, (guess which one I completely neglected) when Donovan scored I went nuts, I actually sound like some sort of crazy man for about 4 seconds.

Seriously lame though about that goal not being counted. Of course it could have been a VERY different game if it had counted.

I watched the Germany/Ghana game last night on the wide screen with a huge group of students. It was a very tense but ultimately jubilant night.

I must say I like this schedule where the finals for each group are being played simultaneously. It forces all the teams play more aggressively.

At least Italy scored a few goals. And of course France's team this year was even more disastrous with all their off the field dramatics.

This World Cup is like World War II. France leave early, USA turn up at the last minute, and England are left fighting Germans.

Ha! It's true.

Brazil and Portugal played a very aggressive and hard game. I was pretty impressed. Portugal seems to rise to the occasion, and deflate when it's easy. I must say Ronaldo though has been disappointing me.

The Germans and English have been playing strangely lately, I wonder how the teams will play when they butt heads.

I'll be watching the US/Ghana game with alot of interest. I believe the US can most certainly take this game, but those Ghana guys have alot of endurance, the US better keep some juice in storage for the final 15 minutes.

The world reacts to Donovan's goal. Pretty neat. I love seeing people excited about soccer in the US. I live in the middle of American football country, so I usually hear nothing but disparaging remarks about soccer.

As a "soccer mom" (my daughter plays) I want to see the sport gain more following.

Uruguay or Ghana will go to the semi. I didn't think I'd live enough to see that.

US V Ghana was on at 2:30 am (my time) so I didn't watch the initial game. I decided to turn on the TV to see if the replay was on or perhaps catch highlights. Instead I got replays of Korea V Uruguay which I had already watched last night for 10 minutes, then suddenly 5 second graphic showing that Uruguay would be playing Ghana on July 2nd or something.

It was a very frustrating way to find out the US had lost.

Posted by Miro (Member # 1178) on :

That was painful. Ghana ran circles around us in the first half, but we were a whole different team in the second half. So many chances.

I got pretty frustrated with Ghana's endless faking and time wasters in overtime.

I really want a poster of Tim Howard going for the header against Ghana's keeper. That was awesome.

Just a couple hours to the start of the Germany/England match. I'll be routing for the Germans (I will be watching from Germany after all). I'm hoping for a Germany/Netherlands stand off in the finals, but Germany will have a hard time getting past Argentina (presuming they survive today).

Actually, If I weren't in Germany, my heart would be with Argentina all they way. They've been playing the best most exciting football in the tournament.

Brazil's performance has been very lack luster. The second half of the Brazil/Portugal game was a really yawner. It looked more like a practice than a World Cup match. Chile was looking strong until that last match with Spain where their defense completed imploded.

I hope the Germans bring their A game today, but I also hope the English do as well. I can't really say I'm rooting for either team, I want to watch a fantastic match tonight.

I'm supporting Spain and England this year. I don't think England have much chance against Germany, but it will be interesting to see.

Spain v Portugal is on Tuesday. It's ridiculous how national rivals have all ended up playing each other so early this year. I suppose we should all just be glad that France has gone home already.

England just got mugged.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

England got very mugged. I don't know why they can't just review those decisions during half time and change the results.

That was extremely poor linesman work. I can see the ref having trouble calling that the shot was taken from pretty far back, but that's just ridiculous the linesman couldn't tell. All they do is watch for that, off-sides, and which side touched it last before going out.

If England gets knocked out at least they can grieve with us.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

Ignoring Germany's brilliantly methodical offense, their defense has been extremely solid. England feels like a team full of mid-fielders.

The problem is, you use logic. FIFA don't. I kind of hope there will be some more incorrect decisions, probably some clearly costing the match for a team, then the national federations might all gang up on FIFA to start using video replays...

People are partying in the streets in Germany. Some of the major roads here in Muenster are completely blocked by revelers.

And a one: goal Argentina from a clear offside. The referees don't really know what to do, as they have only seen the offside from the replays, but aren't allowed to use that information. Finally the goal stands, but this will certainly put fuel on the fire...

Posted by LisethMA (Member # 12162) on :

No, that's where Mexico lost all their fire. They got so angry and upset over the very horribly called goal that they couldn't get it together again. Then Aguirre the coach of Mexico is an idiot, how could he even think that starting with Buffo(Bautista)would be okay? And why didn't he put Ochoa as goalkeeper? But the worst he saved for last when he took out Guardado and put in Franco. Even when ALL of Mexico told him that Franco should NOT play.
The only highlight of the day, watching my dad dance around with my daughter when Chicharito (Hernandez) put in the goal for Mexico.

Argentina getting goals it does not deserve? Color me shocked!

Yes, that first goal was definitely a nice one. Too bad that we had to wait until the 84th minute for the second goal.

On to the quarterfinals, but the team will have to improve if they want to have a chance of beating the next opponent.

Whatever happened to the Chilean defense. The team looked so good in its first two matches, but their defense just disappeared against Spain and Brazil. It wasn't even a case of the defenders being out played by a better team. The defenders just weren't there when they should have been.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

I missed that game.

Mr. Y: Getting any goals in a game is a blessing to me. I hate those drawn out 0-0 draws. I completely agree though, The Netherlands game was not as tight as previous ones, and they will have to step that up in the next round.

I think it's going to come down to Argentina, Brazil, Uraguay, and Portugal. If I could have my way I'd put Germany and Brazil in the final.

Posted by Corwin (Member # 5705) on :

Wait, you rate Portugal above Spain? I know Spain haven't exactly played stellar football so far, but I still think they'll win against Portugal.

I see Argentina vs Germany as very hard to call with the winner going to the final, and Brazil walking through to the final if Spain don't improve.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

Corwin: generally I'd give Spain more love, but I just haven't seen them bring it. Portugal didn't really knock my socks off, at least not until they played Brazil, then I felt like I saw their team really connect. Ronaldo still kinda disappointed me, but overall I was impressed with their tactics.

Yeah I only gave the edge to Argentina over Germany because Argentina has done nothing but play well, whereas Germany had that one game where they were beaten by Serbia. They were relentless when playing England, but I don't think Argentina is going to give them virtually any gaps. Either way, it's a match I won't be missing.

While Japan has surprised me a bit, I'd still rather be watching Spain and Portugal go at it tonight instead of Japan and Paraguay.

I was really impressed with Uruguay today.

And, once again, it was an official's decision that turned the game. The linesmen got several calls wrong today.

Posted by Mr. Y (Member # 11590) on :

Well, I think the final score aptly displays the flow of the match. Possession, shots on goal, fouls and corners were almost equal on both sides.

It may be that the linesmen didn't get all their calls right, but I don't think there were any flagrant oversights on their part. Most of the offside situations were about a few inches...

Anyway, the general consensus over here seems to be that The Netherlands should have pushed on after scoring their third goal. They could have made two more, but instead they lapsed and let Uruguay come close in the final minutes.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

I only got to watch the replay up to the Netherlands third goal, so from my perspective both teams played very well. The Netherlands first goal though was something else, I thought Uruguay had the best goal of the cup against Korea (I think that was the game) but this shot was exquisite to watch.

I hate the fact the rest of the games are being played 2:30am my time, I can't catch any of them. If I hadn't been sick yesterday and taken the day off I might have done so instead for the World Cup final. But that's how it goes I suppose.

We may actually get a Netherland/Germany final, that would be...kinda strange actually, both sides like the counter attack.

Germany looked flat-footed that whole match. Spain really effectively closed down the center. Even the German assault at the end of the match looked pretty half-hearted and out of sync. Not sure if that was due to quality defending by the Spanish or just lack of will from the Germans.

My thoughts exactly. I missed the better part of the first half, but it never really seemed like they found any kind of rhythm.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

Yeah, Spain did a much better job of adapting their strategy. It felt like Germany just expected their strategy up until now to win yet again.

Still there was that one shot counter attack strike by Krose that was absolutely perfect except it went exactly where the keeper was heading. If he had put it even just a few inches left or up it would have gone in.

I was sad Germany lost, but Netherlands V Spain will be a good game! And now I know exactly who I am rooting for. The Flying Dutchmen!

I'm so mad, I tried to go to bed early so I could wake up at 2:30am and watch but I didn't manage to fall asleep until midnight (room mate had the light on and was on the phone.) so when I woke up mid game it was exactly half time and I was just so tired I went back to sleep. I missed the whole thing. But at the same time it sounds like I wouldn't have enjoyed it. 14 yellow cards and a red?! The only goal happened in stoppage time? That's just barely better than it all going down to penalties for me.

Posted by Nighthawk (Member # 4176) on :

It was a brawl. One of the most agressive games I've ever seen.

Almost every player was yellow carded at the end, and that's not counting a few that the ref didn't see. One Spanish player hip checked a Dutchman flat on his face and it went uncalled.

Ich auch!!

I got home from a bike tour through Belgium and the Netherlands right as the game was starting and after several days in the low countries I was completely behind the dutch -- right up until De Jong kicked Alonso in the chest.

That was one of the nastier games I've ever watched.

Posted by Mr. Y (Member # 11590) on :

During the match the Dutch commentators kept saying that both teams appeared apprehensive of each other. This could be the reason for the fact that nothing much of interest happened in the first 90 minutes. In the second half of the game the play was slightly more interesting with a few good chances on for both teams.

With regard to the many fouls perpetrated, I can only say that in the first half of the match both teams made some pretty nasty tackles.
People are now saying that the Dutch team wasn't used to playing at high altitudes and this made it impossible for them to get their game flowing (in as much as it had been fluent throughout the tournament - which was very different from the way they played in previous tournaments). Desperate to keep the Spanish side from scoring they were perhaps a bit overzealous in their defending.

I have to agree with the sentiment that the better team won the match. I do not begrudge Spain their victory and at least this way it was easier to digest than losing by means of penalty kicks (for which the Dutch team has a very bad record).

Fortunately for me, I don't get emotionally invested in these things and it didn't really matter to me which side would end up the winner.

Congratulations to Spain!

Really brutal on both sides. Not quite the beautiful game.

But I'm so glad that Spain won!
This country needed some good news lately, and a lady in her late sixties told me last night that she's never seen all of Spain so united and patriotic about one thing.

So many flags, so much singing, so much happiness. It's a real boost to the national self-esteem. ¡Campeones del mundo!

Ozil was amazing this World Cup. I am also really happy Mueller won the golden boot. For a kid his age to score five goals and win the Golden Boot as well as the "Best Young Player" award in his very first world cup is saying something.

I'm confident that he was will be purchased by a top seeded team soon for a huge amount of money.

There was some brilliant soccer this year, and some not so brilliant officiating. Overall I am happy with the results, though I still wish my Brazilian team had gone all the way... Its a shame that one player crushed the dreams of an entire country. Felipe Melo is not going to have a career for very long.

Paul! He's a big star at the moment in Spain.

The Spanish team had a (home-made) picture of him on the front of their parade bus, and there are popular songs and chants about him including 'The Octopus knew it' and 'Thanks to the Octopus, we are the champions'.

There's also quite a big market in plush octopus toys for the kids.

Jose Andres, one of the DC area's best known chefs, took octupus off the menu indefinitely at all of his restaurants after Spain beat Germany.

It'll be interesting to see how long octopus stays off the menu now.
