Does he have anything personal on his desk that can give you clues? Pictures of family/friends/pets? Toys (and yes I'm serious about that)? Have you been able to overhear the type of music he likes?

He just started, and its an intern position, so he doesn't really have his own desk. Thanks for the help so far.

Beware- if you go to thinkGeek.com, you may end up playing on there far longer then you should. We are doing a white elephant gift exchange ($10 and under) and I spent forever looking at all the neat stuff. In the end, I am giving stuffed syphilis dolls in a petri dish and my husband caffeinated soap.

gas cards and lottery tickets are co-worker presents that are good.

Lottery tickets? I'd be really annoyed if somebody gave me lottery tickets.
Posted by scholarette (Member # 11540) on :
I would not want lotto tickets, but most of my coworkers go crazy with excitement over them (assuming you mean the scratch off kind).

We just had a Yankee Gift swap at my office with a $25 limit. Just to give you an idea of what was given:
- 2 bottles of wine, white and red (by far the most popular, I think 5 or 6 people gifted this) - bottle of Grey Goose - "Rabbit" style wine bottle opener - Gift cards (Starbucks, Home Depot) - Armor-all car care kit - DVD boxed set of first season of a TV series

Being LDS, the booze thing kind of sucks.

I'm sure it does. It's just so hard to get "generic" stuff that it often becomes a default.
At least Rival was given a gender and age, which helps. I think for secret Santas the participants should have to give a short listing of likes/dislikes where they could put "I love music" or "I don't drink alcohol" or "Please no Christmas stuff, as I'm Jewish" etc.
It would make it a lot easier.

We're doing secret Santa, as well. It's 3-4 $1 gifts, then a $5 gift. I got someone who I believe thinks I'm the stupidest person in the newsroom, and he didn't put anything down as suggestions. (Less than helpful.)
