Question:

has anyone here used Guru? They have this Escrow kind of payment thing; is it safe? They want me to pay the full contractor fee up front, and I'm just a bit nervous.

Thanks!

Although I've used Rent-a-Coder more often, I've had at least one customer on Guru.

Yes, technically it is safe.

You pay the amount to Guru. Guru holds it until your contractor finishes the work and you are satisfied with it. The contracter posts their "final deliverables", and once you say "OK, that's exactly what I wanted" they don't see a dime.

From the contractor's point of view, it's a major pain. I've had to wait MONTHS for customers to approve stuff and release funds. And, in several cases, they continue to add modifications and ask for tweaks to the product, essentially holding the amount ransom until you comply.

If the contractor does not comply, you get your money back and the contractor gets charged a percentage of the amount for failing to deliver.

Given my family's poor experience with contractors, that sounds excellent.

But I imagine for every bad contractor it holds accountable, there's a good contractor that is unfairly taken advantage of.

It worked out just fine for me. Found a good designer at a low price, although there was a lot of initial issues that somehow cleared up.
