It's strange to me that Ridley Scott is producing. I would hope that is indicative of substance behind the idea. I think a Predator remake is much more feasible than Alien.

Is it sad that remaking an old movie with the same name is chosen over remaking an old movie but pretending it's not a remake? I can't decide which form of recycling is worse.

I think, if I were a struggling Hollywood screenwriter, my reaction to this news would be to shoot myself.
The question is whether I'd try to take any of the studios' greenlight teams with me.

My initial reaction to this was "What? But it's way too recent of a film to be remade!" Then I checked IMDB, and discovered that the film turned 30 this year (it did so on Monday, actually). That's not much older than The Thing From Another World was when John Carpenter's remake came out, and at that time the original movie, though I was familiar with it from late night UHF TV, seemed like an ancient relic to me. Now, I was only 10 when it came out, which I'm sure warped my perspective on the age of the original movie, but still--I would imagine that for many of our younger members here the original Alien film probably seems like ancient history as well.
