Back in the mid-90s, Marvel Comics briefly held the license to create Star Trek comics. They quickly launched an entire line of generally well-regarded (if somewhat short-lived) series set in the Trekverse. There was a Starfleet Academy comic, a series set during the Pike years...and there was Star TreX, the bizarre over-sized 1996 special. It featured a fight between Mister Spock and (who else?) Wolverine.

You want to know how it played out? Really? Well, see for yourself.

The sequence had teenager-me rolling.

Paramount should totally use this in their ads on Friday. [Wink]

I can't for the life of me figure out why Wolverine is grabbing at Spock's shirt in that last panel, his claws retracted. Perhaps Vulcan nerve pinches also retract mutant claws?

Eh, it's mid-90s Marvel. All the artist had to do was the weird Top Cow "kewl" style, other considerations be damned. [Smile]

I believe I saw a Star Trek TNG novel set in some bizarre portmanteau universe involving a planet where the X-men lived, or something. It looked garish, to say the very least.

And is it just me, or does the homo-erotic uber-muscular theme bump anybody else when looking at these comics? Hugh Jackman was distractingly chiseled (I suspect he was juicing) in the latest movie, but these things are just completely unrealistic. That last link shows a guy with so many overdeveloped muscles that he would probably be too heavy to walk, and would probably be hard pressed to raise his arms over his head.

I can honestly say I have never been turned on in the slightest by the Top Cow Studios "House Style" that seemed to be everywhere in the 90s, but happily seems to have diminished some in the present.

My taste tends more to John Buscema or Bruce Timm style stuff, when it comes to super-hero art.

What if you were stuck in a navel-gazing indie alternative comic? You'd angst about the meaninglessness of life constantly, all while looking like a NickToon from the wrong side of the tracks.

What I really want to know is who Kirk wound up having misty intimate relations with. I mean, one has to be true to the genre after all.
