If your tastes are as contrary as mine are, then all this news about tainted peanuts (The Nut Case) makes you want to eat some peanut butter.

What is your favorite way to eat peanut butter? Just straight creamy goodness licked from the spoon? With grape jelly on Wonder Bread? Pickles? Ketchup? Reese's Cup?

When I was a kid, I loved to spread my peanut butter sandwich (creamy, please) with orange juice concentrate instead of jam. Ma used to get annoyed when she went to get one of those cans of frozen concentrate out of the freezer, only to find that I had finched a spoonful of it for my sandwich.

Of course, I thought the Fluffernutter was an idea of inspired genius, although now it doesn't appeal at all. My adult palate prefers the "natural" style peanut butter (creamy, please) on toasted rye bread with thinly sliced raw onion (Vidalia is best, but I'm not picky).

Oh, and the Reese's Cup. Nothing wrong with those!

I have no idea what a Fluffernutter is.

Other than that, the idea of concentrated orange with peanut butter just does not appeal. At all.

I prefer Reese's Cup. Or peanut butter with jam. Or with honey. Or straight out of the jar on a spoon. [Smile] Yeah, I think I'm rather boring...

Oh, and no crunchy. I like smooth, too. [Smile]

Most of the time I enjoy my peanut butter in a very straightforward manner. Spread liberally on a slice of bread.

Sometimes I combine it with chocolate sprinkles.

And on very rare occasions I go for the triple threat; peanut butter combined with chocolate spread (hazelnut flavour optional) and caramel spread.

It has a name? Mom used to sometimes make those for us as kids ... it was my favorite sandwich. Now that I'm an adult, I can't believe she could even call that "lunch". My kids have never had one. I'm so mean.

Nowadays I like my peanut butter crunchy, and I spoon it onto a banana as I eat it. Yum. Or in peanut-butter-and-raspberry-jam sandwiches.

Oh, and Reese's peanut butter cups, too. And Tagalongs. (I'm so glad it's Girl Scout Cookie season!)

Wow...that would be good but quite potent! 8D

I know a gentleman who likes to put PB on whatever type of sandwich he's eating at the time, be it ham or turkey or just a regular PB&J. *shudder*

Personally, I'll eat PB in whatever fashion so long as it's either by itself or in combination with one of the following: ice cream, jelly of some kind, marshmallow or chocolate. The only more complicated combo being a peanut butter, jelly and marshmallow sandwich which is made on a campfire sandwich cooker. You butter the outside of the bread to keep it from sticking, make your PB&J as usual but put either mini marshmallows or fluff in between. Then you cook it on a stove burner (or campfire, I suppose) until it's golden brown on the outside. Wait a minute before cutting it, for it will ooze and burn you, and sprinkle powdered sugar on top (just don't try to inhale when you take a bite ;] ).

Oh, and I like crunchy PB on normal PB&J but not really anywhere else.

PB on graham crackers.

PB and chocolate chips on a hot enough bagel to melt the two together.

My favorite quick breakfast: Chunky peanut butter spread on whole wheat toast, then spoon on a layer of organic apple sauce, then sprinkle with a dash of real cinnamon. Wash down with milk. Tasty and filling.

Yum. Also, it's too bad I'm not allowed to sell them out-of-area. I have two Girl Scouts to shill^H^H^H^H^H sell for. [Wink]

I also like PB & banana sandwiches, although I haven't had any for a while either. And just plain peanut butter off the spoon is great.

When I was a kid, I would have a bowlful of PB & J -- no bread. Just the two mixed together, eaten with a spoon. That one I no longer have any interest in.

Did anyone have "Ants on a Log" as a child? Peel a banana, lay it on its side, spread peanut butter on it (moss growing on the log), and then add raisins to the peanut butter (ants marching across the log).

Peanut butter (always creamy! Crunchy peanut butter is only half done), banana, and bacon make a really good sandwich. If it was good enough for Elvis. [Wink]

I'm intrigued by the idea of onion on a PB sandwich so I might add some to the above and see what it's like. I think I'll try red.

If you want to just eat straight peanut butter, my favorite way is to stick bite sized globs in the freezer for a day or two before eating. The taste is just as good, if not a little better, and the texture and ease of eating is much improved.

I had ants on a log as a kid - but there was no banana involved. It was always celery with peanut butter and raisins.

Oddly enough, as an adult I don't really like any of those things anymore.

I like peanut butter on apples and I like all varieties of reeses I've tried. But that's pretty much it.

Take two pieces of rye bread, spread one with creamy PB, one with plain cream cheese (low-fat would probably work, too), and put grape jelly in the middle. The bread should be either very fresh or toasted. One of my fave childhood sandwiches.

I spent forty years of my life really disliking peanutbutter; probably a reaction to an unfortunate overindulgence.
Now, I enjoy it (only before 0800) on warm multigrain toast. I spoon strawberry freezer jam on each bite because it won't stay on the slice thick enough. And, I drink lots of milk with it.

This sounds delicious, but what is strawberry freezer jam? [Confused]

I love peanut butter swirled in ice cream, either vanilla or chocolate, and mini peanut butter cups are a plus as well.

I'm not fond of PB on a sandwich, but love it on toast. And PB cookies are one of my favorites. I've recently perfected a chocolate/peanut butter marbled cookie that is to die for.

Freezer jam: Very simple jam made of fruit & sugar & pectin (or not with pectin). You freeze it instead of bottling with heat. It tends, IME, to be a little runnier than bottled jam.

Posted by Jhai (Member # 5633) on :

Does freezer jam taste different than regular jam, or is it just made because of the simplicity of creating it that way?

Posted by Ron Lambert (Member # 2872) on :

Peanut butter and dill pickle sandwiches are surprisingly good. I know it sounds absurd, but a friend finally got me to try it. The sweet-sour works well with peanut butter.

But I do still like peanut butter with grape jelly or honey in sandwiches.

By the way, I recommend Jiff as the best-tasting of the common brands. I have no preference between smooth or crunchy.

Posted by maui babe (Member # 1894) on :

I think freezer jam is sweeter than bottled jam, and has a grainier texture. I've always preferred making cooked jam.

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

Peanut butter on a slice of multigrain toast, topped with banana slices and cinnamon, drizzled with honey.

But usually it's peanut butter thinly spread on crispbread, given calorie concerns.

[oooo ... but the latter is very good as well if thinly thinly coated with melted dark 99% cocoa chocolate and then frozen. num num]

Yeah, I think freezer jam is for convenience. Although when still frozen it makes a handy ingredient for smoothies (if you can chip off chunks of it, and don't mind the extra sugar). Also a good sponge cake topping with whipped cream.

Many people with dentures do not like to eat peanut butter, especially the crunchy kind. But that is a matter of convenience, not taste. I still have my teeth, fortunately.

1 cup peanut butter
1 bag butterscotch chips
6 cups crushed cornflakes

melt pb and bs chips in microwave. Mix in cornflakes. Put on wax paper in fridge. Let cool. Eat. And eat. And eat.

They don't last long in our house.

I also used to put Fritos in my pbj sandwiches.

Mama S, looks like chocolate chips might work well as an addition to your recipe. Or else smash up and mix together Heath Bars and Reese's Cups.

And while we're considering additional ingredients, what about coconut? Ever hear of a candy bar called Zagnut? I don't know if they make them any more.

I have found a new appreciation for peanut butter living in a dorm as I now do.

My favorite method for eating it would be: Sandwich, with jelly or honey or banana.
It also spices up ice cream, or pretty much any dessert.
Also, basically any candy involving peanut butter (reese's etc)

I have little preference for either chunky or smooth

I have discovered that eating pineapple directly following peanut butter makes it not stick to your teeth, and I assume the same goes for ?anything acidic? hmmm

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Doubtful. Jelly is acidic.

But fresh pineapple has an enzyme that denatures many proteins. Might do something to peanut butter.

Peanut butter and lettuce sandwich, with raisins.

Sounds strange, but my grandpop (who's got old-fashioned plain cooking tastes) is the one who told me about it. And it is pretty good. You get the crunchiness of lettuce, the sweetness of the raisins, and the creaminess of the peanut butter all mixing together quite nicely.

I know that was aimed at me... But the only way I'll eat the two is if the peanut butter is in a Thai-style peanut sauce on noodles. Then, that's good stuff.

I put a big spoonful of peanut butter in a pot of chili the other day. (Why? Because it seemed easier than chopping up pistachios.*)

It wasn't bad. It wasn't my favorite pot of chili, but it was an interesting variation.

I found that immediately after adding the peanut butter the chili had a strong peanut aroma and flavor. After cooking for another while (20 min? I forget) the peanut flavor faded significantly, leaving the chili with a nutty flavor but less redolent of Jif. So if you try this don't panic if at first it seems like you made a big pot of chili-flavored peanut butter. (I wonder if it's a matter of boiling off volatile compounds in the peanut butter, or of compounds becoming better absorbed and/or emulsified...)

*I haven't tried the pistachios yet. Next time, maybe. Or maybe pepitas if I don't have to shell them myself.

I don't eat a lot of PB&J sandwiches these days. But I love it in a peanut sauce, like for chicken satay or gado gado (indonesian salad). And I have a strong nostalgia for the peanut butter version that Andes (of the Andes Mint) used to make (don't know if they still do)- my mother used to have a jar of them on her office desk.

Peanut butter doesn't have added sugar in my mom's house. Just ground peanuts. So when she made peanut butter and banana sandwiches, she put honey on them.

Posted by Ron Lambert (Member # 2872) on :

You can get peanut butter without added sugar, or corn syrup, or other sweetener. It is usually marketed as "health" or "organic" peanut butter, and costs a little more. The oil sometimes separates out after sitting for awhile, and you have to stir it up. It can go rancid more quickly (unless they add some kind of preservatives), because sugar itself is a preservative.

That's what a nice cold glass of milk is for!

I don't think my mother ever made me a pb&j. A peanut butter sandwich, to me, was bread with peanut butter spread on it. The first time I tried it with jelly I thought it was nasty, and still do.

I like mine plain on wheat bread. Rye is for other things, like liverwurst or toasted w/ various kinds of cheese; don't like it w/ peanut butter.

I don't like p.b. in ice cream or in various other places it turns up, but think that it's inspired in Reese's. My current hard-to-find favorite: Reese's Stix.
