Alrighty so what young and up and coming British actors could we see as being the next Doctor? It pains me to accept this but unless David Tennant changes his mind I don't think we have much choice in the matter.

So here's my speculation having absolutely no knowledge of the British Acting Industry:

Now ignoring the possible acting requirements if we wanted a David T. Look Alike there's "Hamster" Hammond from Top Gear who looks almost exactly like him. But I don't think hes an actor.

Now with Acting Requirements:

From Wikipedia:

quote:

Throughout his regenerations, the Doctor's personality has retained a number of consistent traits.[1] Its most notable aspect is an unpredictable, affable, clownish exterior concealing a well of great age, wisdom, seriousness and even darkness. While the Doctor can appear childlike and jocular, when the stakes rise, as, for example, in Pyramids of Mars, he will often become cold, driven and even callous. Another aspect of the Doctor's persona, which, though always present, has been emphasised or downplayed from incarnation to incarnation, is compassion. The Doctor is a fervent pacifist and is dedicated to the preservation of sentient life, human or otherwise, over violence and war,[13] even going so far as to doubt the morality of destroying his worst enemies, the Daleks, when he has the chance to do so in Genesis of the Daleks, and again in "Evolution of the Daleks". He also, in The Time Monster, begs Kronos to spare the Master torment or death, unintentionally winning the evil Time Lord's freedom, which he tells Jo Grant was preferable anyway, and forgives the Master for his actions in "The Sound of Drums" and "Last of the Time Lords", vowing to take responsibility for his former friend.

I am assuming from the current trend that they're going for younger actors with I think, different more exotic British accents rather then the BBC common, so either another Scottsman, or someone from Wales or Cockney.

Mark Sheppard I think would make an interesting Doctor especially if he keeps many of the mannerisms of Romo Lampkin.

Another possibility: Daniel Radcliffe Yes, I know Harry Potter Blah Blah but hes much older now so conceivably he could pull it off, might be a good way to expand his acting horizons, besides "Extras" I haven't seen him in anything else so I can't say much.

Oh, maybe one of the actors who plays Fred/George also from HP, this way the Doctor will finally achieve his desire of being Ginger for once.

But anyways my memory is failing me for searching for younger up and coming British actors.

John Barrowman. There has to be a way that could work.

Short Answer no.

Long Answer Noooooooooooooooooooooo...ooo...ooo..

...ooooo.ooooo.oooo......oooo.ooo.o.o

!!!

Why?

Posted by Blayne Bradley (Member # 8565) on :

Because it would look weird. The guy is great as Harkness and all but I don't want him to be the Doctor.

Posted by Eaquae Legit (Member # 3063) on :

Well, Stephen Moffatt is on the hunt for a 40-or-older sort of dude and one fairly well established already, so you can probably end your hunt for a "young and up and coming" Doctor.

Posted by Blayne Bradley (Member # 8565) on :

40 is still young. And we can still speculate who.

Posted by Lisa (Member # 8384) on :

Well, how old is Mark Sheppard? According to IMdb, he's 44. That should be old enough. He's make a phenomenal (albeit dark) Doctor.

Posted by Boris (Member # 6935) on :

Michael Cain, damn it.

Posted by Eaquae Legit (Member # 3063) on :

Blayne, he wants a grandfatherly sort. The kind of grandfather kids see and know immediately is one of them, is the general gist of things. 40 is the minimum. He's deliberately moving away from young Doctors.

Go ahead and speculate (heaven knows everyone here is), but take into account the probabilities, is all.

For whatever reason, Mark Sheppard doesn't do it for me. He seems too cynical.

What about Marc Antony from HBO's Rome? He was in serious contention for James Bond several years ago... yeah?

Edit: That'd be James Purefoy.

Posted by Blayne Bradley (Member # 8565) on :

But we had like 8 old Doctors already [Frown]

Posted by dabbler (Member # 6443) on :

But my bf just read an article from Moffat saying he wasn't going to pick an older actor b/c it's such a grueling season. He doesn't think an older actor could put up with the strenuous nature of the work.

Patrick Stewart? I don't think it would happen, but I think it would be awesome.

Posted by Blayne Bradley (Member # 8565) on :

Oh my god, coincidence? I was just watching an episode of Top Gear that had mr Steward on it.

It was awesome.

Speaking of Rome, how about Kevin McKidd? He was great on Journeyman.

Although... speaking of Brits passing as American on US TV... how about Hugh Laurie? I mean, if it weren't for House, wouldn't he be an incredible Doctor? And there's Damien Lewis from Life, and the guy who plays Joe DuBois on Medium.

How about either of the guys from The It Crowd?

Posted by Blayne Bradley (Member # 8565) on :

I think a House Doctor would be good.

Posted by Eaquae Legit (Member # 3063) on :

I could really get behind Hugh Laurie, especially since I've been watching a lot of Fry and Laurie and Jeeves and Wooster lately. Too bad about House, though. He's probably busy.

Posted by Bella Bee (Member # 7027) on :

Someone somewhere suggested Chiwetel Ejiofor. I think he'd be great - he can certainly go from friendly to scary at the drop of a hat.

I'd love Damien Lewis as the Doctor, and he'd be ginger! But I don't want Life to be cancelled.

Patrick Stewart would be wonderful but probably wouldn't want to do it as it's more sci-fi TV.

They've already had Tony Head in the show as someone else (not that that stopped them before).

Somehow, I think it'll probably be someone none of us have thought of. But I will say, I hope the next companion is either a bloke or, if it has to be a woman, she's not from 21st century London.

Posted by Javert (Member # 3076) on :

Stephen Fry would be perfect, I think.

What's so grueling about it?

Getting up in the wee hours of the morning for makeup, filming until it's dark, getting up in the wee hours of the morning for night shoots, being the lead actor which means being in nearly every frame so you're at *every* filming session, every day for two or three months straight (it might be more, I'm not certain). Filming done, you now have the beginning of the season coming up, so you're doing advertisement photo shoots, media appearances, interviews, and all that stuff. Pretty heavy schedule.

Posted by kwsni (Member # 1831) on :

I don't think I'd like Tony Head as the Doctor, because I would constantly be going Giles!. Which is what I did in the episode he was in. I want to believe in the Doctor as himself, and not be comparing him to someone else.

Ni!

Posted by Lisa (Member # 8384) on :

Plus, Tony Head is playing Uther on Merlin.

Posted by Lisa (Member # 8384) on :

And Blayne... don't take this the wrong way, but I think this thread is misnamed. The 11th Doctor is being played by David Tennant already. When he regenerated this time, he chose not to change his appearance, so David Tennant is the first actor to play two Doctors in a row. The question is: Who will play the next (12th) Doctor?

I think we can still call the next Doctor the 11th, because Tennant's Doctor didn't change. So while it was the 11th regeneration (if I'm counting correctly), it's still the 10th Doctor.

Exactly even then, we're not exactly sure if his reincarnations incremented or not, or even if Time Lords are limited still to 12.

Posted by amira tharani (Member # 182) on :

I've heard vague rumours that Judi Dench might be considering it.... I can't decide if that would be completely awesome or completely wrong.

Posted by Blayne Bradley (Member # 8565) on :

sounds female?

Indeed female, no she will not be the Doctor, the Doctor is clearly male, Time Lords/Ladies never switch genders when they regenerate.

Who says?

Far be it from me to agree with Blayne, but the fact that they differentiate the terms "Time Lord" and "Time Lady" is suggestive that these are set genders as opposed to fluid ones.

But of course, this is a sci-fi show, and they can go in whatever direction they want with it, regardless of what they've suggested in the past.

I just found this show on Sci-fi about 2 months ago, so I don't have the attachment to a certain Dr. some of you may have built. I was flipping through the channels when I ran across the episode where everyone's face was turning to gas masks and the were walking around saying "Are you my mommy? Mommy...". After seeing that I knew this show had something and started watching it everytime I can catch it on. My little brother is supposed to bring down the whole first season. He says I have no idea how truly creative the show is, and I tend to believe it.

As far as speculation on who Dr. Who should be, I have no idea. I just know I wouldn't want somebody who's already famous showing up, I think it'd ruin it for me.

There's no way in the cosmos that the Doctor, in any incarnation, would refer to himself so blatantly and show-boatingly as "The Doctor, Just the Doctor... (...) ...this is a job for a Time Lord!"

No. Way.

Yeah, I smell a trick. Be fun to see what it is, though!

What can I say, I'm into horror so it caught my attention. I liked the future game show episode better if that helps. [Smile]

I haven't seen anything he's been in, but I must say, I like David Morrissey's taste in movies. Good looking fellow, too.

My favorite thing about Tennant has been his childlike sense of wonder, so I can totally see them going for something completely different next. I'm leaning towards this guy being a crazy guy who's seen the Doctor in action and wants to be him (what Doctor would leave his screwdriver with a Companion?), but I wouldn't rule out a pompous Doctor to follow angry and sweet.

Would Answer Ron's earlier question thought ^-^ we asketh and the Universe giveth.

My theory = the new guy IS a future Doctor... but by the end of the show it'll be unclear whether he'll be THE future Doctor (timey wimey wimbly wobbly, new guy will somehow sacrifice himself so that he won't exist, etc.)

They could be doing a double fake on us, too. Show us a guy who says he's the Doctor... then make us think that, no, that's not really the Doctor, he's a fake... then it turns out that he really IS the Doctor.

No. Way.

I could see him referring to himself like that, but not necessarily introducing himself to a previous incarnation of himself (whom he would presumably recognize) as such.

Highly recommend Blackpool. It features both Morrissey and Tennant. Gritty murder mystery/cop drama where every now and again the players involved start singing along with the soundtrack.

Oh, and All4Nothing, "The Empty Child" got me hooked on Who too.

Thanks Amilia!

And now I have that whole cable DVR thing so I can actually record the episodes and not miss them. I'm celebrating right now for so many reasons. [Smile]

He sounded a bit like Captain Hammer.

I think The Empty Child may be my favorite story so far ... wait, I really loved Human Nature too. But Christopher Eccleston will always be my Doctor. (Although I will admit I dearly love David Tennant in almost anything.)

As for the grueling schedule:
quote:
being the lead actor which means being in nearly every frame so you're at *every* filming session, every day for two or three months straight (it might be more, I'm not certain).
They film for nine months. Nine months of running every day. I mean, does anyone in any other show ever have to run as much as the Doctor?

I would LOVE to see Hugh Laurie ... but ever since the end of Season Three (or thirty-whatever, to the purists) I've been wishing for John Simm to be next. Oh, he was good. I know, it's impossible since he was the Master - but he'd be a perfect Doctor.

BTW, I second the Blackpool recommendation. I'll never forget David Tennant and David Morrissey doing the tango.

I got the first season here at the moment and have watched all but the last 3-4 episodes. So far "The Empty Child" has been my favorite in season one.

I just love it...all the episodes are good in their own right. I'm going to have to go out and buy season two and three. I'm putting off watching those last episodes because I don't want it to be over.
