See, I could have voted for that guy. Excellent speech, hit all the right notes. The audience was annoying, but it was the best speech McCain gave this whole campaign.

Why do candidates always wait until they have lost to become likable?

You heard his supporters. If he had run like that, he'd have lost his base and stolen part of Obama's middle. It would have been a closer fight though.

Yah. It reminded me of 2000, and why I supported McCain and may have voted for him over Gore (if he had won the primary obviously)

If he'd played to the middle from the start, it's likely that he could have drawn a lot of support there, perhaps even to the extent that he could have sunk Obamma's campaign before it really got off the ground.
Of course, by the time he actually got the Republican nomination it would be too late to go back, and I don't know if he could have gotten the nomination speaking to the center.
And honestly, either choice in the Obama McCain race seems a lot better to me than anyone from a Clinton Huckabee race.

Traditionally, candidates run away from center in the primary and towards the center in the general election. This year, both candidates seemed to shy away from the center in the general and let the chips fall where they may.
One reason Obama won is the pendulum was swinging left this year (thanks to 8 years of Bush), so his strategy worked.
