...and Men, by They Might Be Giants, continues to be one of my favorite songs.

[Smile] I love that song.

As do I.

That entire album gives me warm nostalgia from my freshman year.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

It was a brand new album for 1990!

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

That album is awesome.

I believe we have a rule about song lyrics, no?

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

Party pooper.

Posted by El JT de Spang (Member # 7742) on :

The funny thing is that I was this ( || ) close to putting '/party pooper' on the end of that post.

Yep-- we do. IIRC, it's that we can't post lyrics to the entire song.

And I haven't.

Someone let me know if that's incorrect.

Posted by El JT de Spang (Member # 7742) on :

You don't RC. It's that we're asked not to post more than two lines of lyrics.

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

Two lines??

If that's the rule, it's a pretty silly rule.

I remembered the rule being 4 or 5 lines, and I thought that was silly.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

It's been two lines for years.

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

Still silly.

Posted by Scott R (Member # 567) on :

JT's a shill for the Silly Party!

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

I'm so disappointed in you, Scott.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

That's not enough, Porter. I demand that you repudiate Scott's original post.

Posted by El JT de Spang (Member # 7742) on :

Are you accusing me of being a shilly?

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

I'd do that, Noemon, but I don't have a dictionary with me right now.

"After killing Jason off and countless screaming Argonauts..."

I was amused that I had to explain to my sister some fifteen years after the album came out that it was sung from the point of view of a nightlight.

Minimum Wage!

Aw crap, I just posted a song's lyrics in their entirety.

You forgot the HEEYAH!

And it's a nightlight that's a blue canary, at that.

I don't know about the rest of you guys but I know one of my life goals is always to keep the nightlight on inside the birdhouse in my soul.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

SO...what you are saying is your soul is a mess? I mean, how many newspapers do you go though, and how often are you changing them?

[Wink]

Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :

Kwea, blue canary nightlights don't have any waste products except heat. No newspapers, just lots of infrared radiation. [Wink]

But that was the nightlights distant ancestors, the night light was refering to a light house to whom he is distanly related to.

"Life's just a mood ring we're not allowed to see."

"I don't want the world; I just want your half."

"The world's address, a place that's worn."

"Cow's a friend to me."

All words of wisdom.

This thread inspired me to listen to TMBG and Toad the Wet Sprocket all night.

So ... I'm the same age as MPH.

Why does that feel so weird?

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

If you figure that out, I'd love to know the answer.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Probably because it also makes her the same age as Tom. And me.

>_< I can't believe I messed that one up.

There was a radio station in Israel that had a show which played really old music, like from the 40s and early 50s, and they used to play Istanbul. Which, if you've ever heard it, is much slower and less energetic than the TMBG cover. Oh, here it is.

First time I heard the TMBG version, I nearly jumped out of my skin. I'd already heard Birdhouse and was planning on finding the album, but I had no idea it was the same band.

We danced to "Istanbul" at nerd camp. Everyone else was vogueing and we were screaming "People just liked it better that wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!"

Just as one might expect.

/nostalgic

We did that, except instead of calling it nerd camp, we called it being staff for cub scout day camp.

Same diff.

The way people I knew acted around They Might Be Giants kept me from giving TMBG a chance for a long time.
