What's the best OTC medication for excessive coughing and mucus? Those are the only symptoms I seem to have. I assume it's hay fever due to all the dead plant stuff in the air this time of year.

The only stuff that seems to work on me is the stuff I can't use at work because it makes me drowsy.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've started using Primatene tablets in the autumn because my coughing and phlegm is usually accompanied by a wheeze. I know asthma runs in my family, and I'm fairly certain I've also got it, but I haven't gotten around to being diagnosed and getting prescription inhalers yet.

I like Mucinex. It loosens everything and makes it go away. Drink lots of fluids, though, and don't take it at bedtime. Take in the morning when you get up or any time during the day. Just not right before bedtime cause it doesn't really help then.

Hey, don't drag me into your other issues.

Store-brand Robitussin is the preferred drug of choice around here.

It's got the same stuff as Mucinex (an expectorant) as well as pseudoephedrine (a decongestant.)

(If it's really due to allergies, though, try loratadine-- Alavert, Claratin, store brand, doesn't matter-- because that would address the root problem rather than the symptoms.)

I second Mucinex. And it's one of the few meds where I find the name brand actually worth paying a little bit more for than the generic.

I second loratadine for allergy issues. Store brand is generally way cheap.

I can't have a cat due to allergies, but I now have a cat, because of loratidine.

Curse you, loratadine!
