I too am not one to care much about the passing of celebrities but I really cared about Paul Newman after seeing his work. He was a distinct personality in the movie business, I don't think anybody will ever be quite like him.

I had the opportunity to work with Paul Newman for a couple of weeks in the early '90s; he was traveling to various colleges around the country to identify opportunities for charity -- both direct donations and promotional endorsements -- and I, as a leader or member of several youth charities in Cleveland at the time, ran into him on the other side of the table six or seven times.

One of the things that stands out in my memory -- besides how short he was -- is how incisive he was. In person, he was very laconic but also very impatient; he'd cut you off halfway through a report if he felt he had the gist, or if he felt that you weren't getting to the gist fast enough. He asked the right sort of questions, too, which surprised me; he was after all known as an actor and driver, not an activist or financier, and I'd expected him to travel with a horde of advisors -- but he didn't. It was him and a single stenographer/personal assistant, and they were flying coach. I don't know how much of this "down-to-earth" bit was an act, but it was utterly convincing.

I met with a lot of people -- including the President -- in various capacities while in college. Only twice did I ever feel honored to have met someone; Vaclav Havel was one, and Paul Newman was the other.

Aside from his body of acting work, that he used his fame to promote charitable work and that he remained married to the same woman for fifty years (not a common thing in Hollywood) spoke much of the man.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Newman.

He chose not to coast on what he had but to always try to keep doing things he felt were important. And he COULD have coasted. I think that is part of what makes him a great person.
