When they found Rooter was eviscerated, they could easily take some tissues without being noticed.

Because she was, despite being a professional, still just a young girl without a family whose best (only) friends had just faced the terrible shock of one of their friends dying and because before that she had accepted the rationale for not taking tissue samples.

Because if they were wrong about no one being able to notice, it could have set off a potentially volatile incident with a sentient species.
