Chris? Because I've never heard the phrase either.

A presentation of your business idea to someone you met in the elevator. You have to sell it before he gets off.

Wikipedia knows all.

All hail wikipedia!

After hearing the phrase that's immediately what I thought it meant.

I thought it was that high whine that you always hear in an elevator.

Psst -- that's the toddler in the stroller behind you.

It makes sense now, but at first I thought it either meant some kind of pitch in baseball, or something to do with the up and down movement of the elevator.

The concept applies to literary agents as well.

Not that I know anything about that.

(But it's better than "rest-room pitch")

Isn't an elevator one of the control surfaces on a plane?

Famous Elevator Pitches---

"Its a movie about Snakes, on a plane."

"Its a movie about those annoying little dogs from the Taco Bell commercial, but following some grand warrior destiny. Think Latino market meets kids market share."

(Though I think, Chihuahua's On A Plane would be the next best movie. I can picture Samuel Jackson, "Get these @#$@#$@# Chihuahua's off this #@$@#$@#$@#$@# plane.")

"Most of our readers are single, so lets break up Mary Jane and Peter Parker's marriage."

"A western in space, but with good acting and writing."

followed by

"I don't get this whole Western in Space thing. Cancel it. I think another American Idol rip off would be a bigger money machine."

When I first saw the thread title, I thought of Muzak.

That was my thought. The word "pitch" made me think of a slope, or angle. An elevator, rudder or aileron has a pitch with reference to the direction of the plane.

Of course, I don't know where the thread title came from.

BTW, does anyone know where the name "plane" came from, with reference to heavier than air flying machines?

An elevator's pitch is ideally 90 degrees. [Razz]
