I own a D-Link DSM-520 media player. It plays avi and other video on my television from either my wireless network or a usb drive connected directly to it. I am considering copying my dvd collection to a 1tb usb drive, but some of the reviews on those are not that great. Does anyone have any of the massive usb hard drives?

Should I go with western digital, seagate, or iomega?

Any of those brands would be fine. Maxtor's a good choice, too, despite the flack they've gotten the past few years. Just go with whichever is cheapest. For what it's worth, most of the external and internal hard drives I've bought have been Western Digital, and they've all worked just fine for me.

Here's the thing, though. Personally, if I were going to invest that much time and effort into ripping that many movies, I'd want at least one additional copy as a backup in case that drive fails. But that's a clear violation of copyright law (and so, of course, I'd never do that, nor would I recommend that you do it).

Just something to think about.

An additional backup copy is not a clear violation of copyright law. I would go so far as to say it is extremely likely to fall under fair use, just as the first copy does.

There is no specified limit to how many copies you are allowed to make under copyright law. What matters most with personal copies you make is how you use them.

Isn't one ripped copy and the original DVD enough security?

You wouldn't rip and then sell the original, would you?

It's not a matter of losing the content that I'd be worried about. Obviously the original DVD would still be there. It's the lost time and effort of ripping them again that I'd want to prevent.
