So apparently Honda is feeling all high and mighty with their robot who conducts music.

I'm not sure why, I am fairly certain two of my music instructors were most certainly robots.

But in all seriousness, it was kinda cool, but I wish they could have found a way to implement more subtle hand and upper torso movements. Though to be honest an expressionless face seems like an improvement, no spittle, and no face flushing anger to deal with.

He better be programmed with the 3 Laws, or we're all in a lot of trouble.

I'd be interested to here from members of the Symphony whether or not any actually conducting was done by the robot.

I tend to suspect that he's at best just a metronome.

I played trombone, tuba, and percussion so I was out of spittle range. I did have a bad director throw his music stand at me. Can Asimo do that?

It's neat, as long as people realize that it's not listening or responsive to the orchestra. There is more to being a conductor than directing traffic, or worse, appearing to direct traffic.

Are you so sure he isn't responding at all? I think I agree with you, but after reading about him on wikipedia I am not so sure he could not be tweaked to perform some rudimentary conducting functions. I'm doubt he could tell the woodwinds to play louder mid performance but it would not surprise me if he could synch the playing with the preprogrammed song and give a performance overview afterwards.

Sad day...

I don't know which is sadder, the fact Asimo fell down the stairs or that when he did everybody either stood there or seemed to be walking away from him. [Frown]

Clearly the Japanese are not yet poised to take over the world with their army of robots.
