I'm going to be 45 years old in a couple of weeks. And I just got pink eye. Which I kind of thought was a kid thing. It's the first time in my life that I've had it.
It's incredibly annoying. As far as I can tell from Wikipedia, it's probably viral conjunctivitis. And it's probably my fault, too.
I've had blepheritis for years (inflammation of the eyelids). My guess is that this cold that won't go away latched onto that and expanded into this. I woke up with my left eye plastered shut, and my right eye half plastered shut. I managed to get the gunk off, but it keeps coming back.
And I'm a programmer. I have to have my eyes open in front of the computer all day.
Which brings me to the "help!!!" part of the subject line. Does anyone here have any idea how I can at least reduce the discomfort until tonight, when I can lay down with a hot compress or something over my eyes?

Keep your eyes shut lest they explode out of your sockets. It happened to a friend of mine once.
Also remember you are extremely contagious especially through hand contact. It's very important you not touch your eyes with yours hands or if you have that you not touch things that people normally touch with their hands. As for the discomfort, keep cleaning away the gunk, and try to keep your eye closed as much as possible. If you can find any occasion where you don't need your eyes, (within reasonable safety parameters of course) just rest them.
I'm pretty sure there are some eye drops you can get that calm the inflammation in your eyes. I'll look.

There's eye drops you can get that are made to help with the pinkeye inflammation. Also, BlackBlade is right, it's very contagious. Wash your hands a lot. Make sure to wash all towels and linens you've been using in hot water and dry on hot. Make sure you aren't touching your face/eyes when you're on the computer. I have no idea how to get germs off a keyboard!

Is viral as contagious as bacterial? I know that bacterial is insanely contagious, but viral might be different.

I've got chronic blepheritis too. It sucks.
Do you wash around your eyes and eyelids with baby shampoo? That's what I do and it helps some.
I only had pink eye once, though I do get infected from time to time. I see the doc and he prescibes prednisone and antibiotic drops and sometimes anibiotic pills. If it's viral, I guess just prednisone to reduce swelling.
OTC I just use artificial tears.

when i got pink eye as a kid my mother had this home remedy that seemed to work very well. it never last for more than a day and didn't really bother me at all while i had it.
She would make up a batch of hot tea(not too hot) and dip cotton balls in it and then rub those over my eye.

I never tried the baby shampoo thing. The truth is, the blepheritis never really bothered me. I wouldn't have known I had it had I not gone in for a consultation about Lasix. They told me I couldn't do it (not that I could afford it anyway) until the blepheritis was gone.
I don't usually have any problem with dryness in my eyes. But today... man, it's annoying.

The tea rub is interesting.
3 different ophthalmologists have recommended the baby shampoo thing for blepheritis, at various intervals (once a week, every 1-2 days, etc.) It probably helps with other infections too. If your blepheritis isn't bothering you I wouldn't make it a routine, but it might help now.
Years ago a doctor noticed my blepheritis before I did, like you. Then it gradually got worse.
Are you sure you actually have pink eye/conjunctivitis and not a bad outbreak of blepheritis?

Pink eye/conjunctivitis is extremely contagious, even for a virus. Around here, they send kids home from school at the first sign of it.
Hmmmm. Can you see out of those liquid eye masks (they don't bother me, but my best friend claims they blind her)? If so, I highly recommend them. Other than that, eye drops.
I second the tea bags. I put the actual tea bags on my eyes (after they've cooled off). I use regular tea, not herbal. I don't know if that makes any difference.

It's the tannins, so it needs to be regular tea.

hey, sorry I didn't get back in here earlier. But for future reference:
You should use black tea, and make it strong(like half the water you'd normally use). let it cool down a bit, but so it's still warm. Dip the cotton ball and rub on your eye lid with your eye closed from the outside in. Don't reuse the cotton ball after the first rub. Do this like 5 times, and 3-4 times a day.

Your eyelids got glued together. Crud continues to build up and block vision after you unglued them. You've got bacterial conjunctivitis, which needs to be treated wirh a prescription antibiotic ointment. Go see a doctor. Conjunctivitis is HIGHLY contagious.

Lisa, I have no real advice - I've had pinkeye a lot, usually catch it from the kids, and I always just suffer through and it clears up on its own in a day or two. I know there are some drops that are supposed to help, so it might be worth a trip to the doctor to get them, just in case it helps you. Sorry, I know it's miserable!

I've been told that secondary infections after having a viral illness (like severe colds and the flu) tend to be bacterial (sinus infection, bronchitis, conjunctivitis). So, even though you just had a cold, it could be bacterial. I think (I could be wrong) that's what people are getting at, that's all.

Apply a compress to your eyes. To make a compress, soak a clean, lint-free cloth in water and wring it out before applying it gently to your closed eyelids. Generally, a cool water compress will feel the most soothing, but you can also use a warm compress if that feels better to you. If pink eye affects only one eye, don't touch both eyes with the same cloth. This reduces the risk of spreading pink eye from one eye to the other.
