So, nathan and I have an xbox 360 and play a bunch of different multiplayer games. I've started this thread to see what other folks have 360s and what games they have, and also if they'd be interested in playing some multiplayer. I'm a bit shy with folks I don't know in multiplayer games, so finding familiar 'faces' so to speak to play with would be great.

Anyway. For multiplayer, I've got Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Gears of War, Rock Band, Frontlines: Fuel of War, DiRT, and G.R.A.W 2. Nathan also plays Marvel Ultimate Alliance, but I don't like that game.

Right now, I'm mostly looking for folks who'll play COD4 and Frontlines. Possibly Gears of War. Halo 3 has been frustrating lately, due to lag, some cheating, and people breaking the ranking system. However, if we could get eight people for a ranked Big Team Battle, that'd be awesome.

What games do other folks have? And are interested in multi?

My husband and I have yet to settle the great philosophical question of whether it's a bad idea to play on Xbox Live. But I'll let you know if he prevails.

We have an ex-brother in law who used to stay up all night gaming on Live and be unable to accomplish anything during the day.

Does GRAW 2 have co-op? I have the original GRAW, and I really enjoyed the co-op but only ever managed to finish one of the missions. I was doing it with one friend, though, and it seemed like the missions were designed for four.

Anyway, I have and would play:

Gears of War (versus and co-op)
Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter (co-op, not so interested in versus)
Team Fortress 2 (The Orange Box)
Halo 3 (prefer co-op, but don't mind versus)
DOOM (versus and co-op)
Catan
Carcassonne
Worms

As far as shooters go, I usually only play the single player campaign, or co-op if it's available. I'm not really into multiplayer versus, as I don't have the time it takes to compete at even a mediocre level, and I don't really have much fun getting my ass kicked by teenagers. I do like playing sports game competitively though.

I have Rainbow Six: Vegas and Gears of War for co-op, and MLB 2K7, NHL 2K7, and Rockstar table tennis for sports games right now. I also have a whole slew of live arcade games, some of which have co-op.

I was thinking about getting Army of Two if it gets decent reviews.

Anyways, my gamertag is Seandor.

I've got Halo 3 and COD 4 (COD 4 for now, maybe permanently depending on how money goes.)

I'd be happy to do either with you folks during the week.

One good way to avoid the potential full friends list problem is to have one person create a Live Silver account, say Hatrack Gamers or something like that, and then have everyone friend it. Then the Hatrack Gamers account doesn't need to be signed in once the requests have been accepted, and everyone has a one-stop shop to see who's online from Hatrack right now.

I only mention this because my friends list is full. [Razz]

Well then, i only play single player games on my 360, ones i can't get on PS3, i would be willing to play if ever anyone wanted, my tag is KittyCrusader . I can help turn the tide against those darned teenagers, and turn my back on my own kind DaDaDAHHH!!!!

I have:

Halo 3
Forza Motorsport 2
Marvel Ultimate Alliance (or "gayest game in the world" as mackillian calls it (I've played it with Nathan))
Need for Speed: Most Wanted
Ace Combat 6

I'd be willing to make a Hatrack Gamers X-box live account, I'll get back to you guys as soon as it's done.

I forgot to mention it while we were playing earlier, but I'm planning on buying another Live enabled game soon. What would you and Nathan suggest?

Alright, I've created one:

Hatrack Gamers

Just PM a friend request. Don't forget to say who you are here so I don't let strangers in.

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

Mack, the friends list limit is 100. You'd be surprised how fast it fills up.

I'll friend Hatrack Gamers tonight. My Live tag is Chemander Keen.

Also, I forgot to mention that I have Rock Band and like playing that online as well. Drums in particular, since I'm using Rock Band to learn drumming for real.

Does that work? My husband has been very against any guitar games because he thinks it won't teach any useful skills.

Drums are the only one that I could see translating into usefull skills.

Forza 2! Nurburgring. Ronin555 is the gamertag.

He should keep an eye on a game called Guitar Rising, in which you plug a real guitar into your computer and play along with songs. It's due out this year.

Rock Band drumming certainly teaches you limb independence and timing.

I sent an invite, my live id is ViolentREMs.

I play RockBand to the exclusion of all others. Expert bass/guitar mostly (darn you Green Grass and High Tides!!!), but I'd sing or drum, given the opportunity.

I also have most of the DLC (except the metal and Industrial, I have very little of that)

It doesn't teach you the guitar, but it does improve rhythm and hand eye coordination. And the drums are much closer to reality, and the singing is, well, singing.

GGHT sucked my will to live on the solo drum tour. On medium. 1. I don't like the song. 2. The song seems about five hundred years long. TORTURE. And it's mid-way through the tour, which sucks, because it seems much harder than any of the other songs on the higher tiers.

Dude, you're never on! Unless you're avoiding us...

I'll ask him when he gets home. Preferably, one of the games we've already got. My opinion leans towards Gears of War, because it's got a great campaign you can do co-op, and I've heard the multiplayer is good as well. But I'll ask Nathan, too. We started a Gamefly account so we could test out full versions of games to see what we'd like. You also have the option of buying the game they send you via the 'keep it' option. Then they'll send you the case and instruction book with free shipping. The prices so far are less than a used game at GameStop, though we've yet to keep a game.

quote:

Yes, yes it DOES. Especially with the bass kick pedal. Drums are a serious pain in the rear until you learn to separate your leg from your hand/arm movements. That's a skill definitely transferable to meatspace drums.

quote:

That sounds awesome.

Oh, when people are talking Forza, are you talking Forza2? I ask because if it is, I should DL the demo to see if nathan and I would want to play too.

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

GGHT was the first song I failed when I started my original medium tour. It teaches you endurance -- you have to sustain precise timing at a faster pace than you're used to for a good two or three minutes toward the end of the song.

Once I finished the medium tour and improved, though, GGHT was pretty easy easy on hard and expert. Added: Especially compared to some of the songs that come after it.

I have a Gamefly account as well, perhaps I should rent some games to test them out before I purchase one (I was planning on buying one from Gamefly).

Same here (on drums), so I "cheated". I saved my Overdrive, and never activated during the fills. That gave me breaks every once in a while.

Sadly, this is not possible on Expert Guitar. I always lose when the last solo gets insane at around 82%-85%. Grrr.

I noticed you and Nathan playing it the other day mack, I was hoping it would turn out to be boring and you two would jump on COD4. Alas, twas not to be.

Incidentally how is AO2?

BlackBlade, next time you'd like us to hop onto another game, just send a message to one of us. I forgot to mention it to the rest of you (Hatrack Gamers) about that, we already established it with MEC. By 'it', I mean sending a message if we're on one game, you're on a different game, and would like to do multiplayer. More than likely, we'll switch over (unless we're on a last level of a game). We'd answer with "okay, let me get to a save point" or "last level, will switch when over" or a simple "okay" and do a quick switch.

I've yet to try the COD4 multiplayer and would like to try it (just not by myself!) What sucks, though, is both nathan and I can't play it at the same time (no split screen xbl or coop on COD4, which sucks).

Twink, I haven't tried the multiplayer on Overlord yet (as I'm still on the campaign). Not sure if I'm interested in that MP, but we'll see. Have you tried it?

As for Ao2, I'll copy/paste most of what I said on Sake (and add a little):

Ao2 is great, though at times it suffers from wonky camera angles, and all the different actions assigned to the A button overlaps at times, leading to doing something you didn't want to do, because a split-second prior, the option shown for pushing the A button had been something else—for example, 'feign death' instead of 'enter' (enter being a turret).

The fact that you can upgrade your weapons by using the cash you earn (and will get options for a mid-mission change to upgrade with your newly earned cash) is pretty cool. It allows for specialization for both members of the team, one person can be heavy weapons (SAW gunner, for example) and the other one the marksman type (using quieter, more accurate weapons). This allows for some pretty cool teamwork—SAW gunner lays cover fire, distracts the enemy entirely, while your partner can flank and pick 'em off one by one.

That ability is much enhanced by the 'aggro' system that Ao2 uses, and does take some getting used to. Basically, the person doing most of the firing attracts all the enemies attention. The more attention the enemy pays to you (and shoots at you), the higher your aggro gets. Once aggro gets full or nearly full, your non-aggro partner is practically invisible to them. You can sneak right up next to a guy and pop him in the head, and he'll be all WTF you weren't shooti—dead.

And I think the game will play out a bit different with every partner you have. Say, if I played this game a second time around with the AI, a third time around with another friend of ours, it'll feel different. It's a game with a very different, new spin on the typical shooter game. Often, the really difficult sections weren't about the ability to shoot very accurately as much as it was being able to work well as a team. When you adapt your teamwork on a difficult section, you find that the difficult part disappears. It's quite cool.

This is definitely a game where I'll be playing the campaign more than once. [Smile]

We haven't tried out the multiplayer yet as I tend to finish the campaign before doing MP. However, I'm not opposed to coop campaign at all (as that's the intent of the game, it seems).

Also note: this is a third-person shooter and not a first-person shooter. It sometimes has the feel of Gears of War, but in a good way.

Nope. I'm curious to see if it's anything like the multiplayer in Pikmin 2 on the GameCube, which is actually fantastic. Overlord's gameplay takes extremely strong cues from the Pikmin franchise.

Awesome. I love Gears co-op and multiplayer. [Added: And I actually prefer third person over-the-shoulder to first person, in general.]

bok-yes and yes

twink-I've never played pikmin, so I'd have no clue. On shooters 1st vs 3rd person, I'm not sure which I like better. More shooters are first person, so it takes a few moments to get used to third person. But, once I get into it, I like it just as much as first. *shrug* I guess I like both equally, each having its own qualities.

Nathan and I finished the Ao2 campaign for the first time last night. Definitely has a ton of replayability. I haven't had that much fun since Gears of War.

And I've noticed that I have more 'fun' with third-person shooters over the more seemingly serious first-person shooters (like Call of Duty 4 or Frontlines). Both have their own merits, though. I wouldn't choose one of over the other. I'm going to try the campaign sometime today with the AI to see what it's like compared to a live person. Since this game really requires 2-man teamwork, I hope the AI is decent (unlike Berzerker-suicide-committing Dom in GoW).

My only real gripe with Ao2 is the use of the A button. When options for the A button overlap, you can accidentally choose the wrong thing because one option will appear a split-second after another. Last night, it was a "Why didn't you drag me? Why are you FEIGNING DEATH while I'm DYING?"

"I meant to drag you! I really did! Then I got shot and it wanted me to pretend I was dead!"

"Stop pretending and heal me!"

"FINE!"

*shots fired*

...we both die.

One really cool thing (as in, we kept raving about it last night) was the GPS Nav system. It wasn't just a 'go over there' sort of thing. If you triggered the GPS/Nav (using the select button), the field of view gets a bluish screen to it. Then the path to your goal is in a faded orange color, with arrows pointing to your next objective. It also will outline major goals (and minor goals) in green. It will also highlight things like mines in red. We didn't figure out the mines thing until they'd killed us three times in a row. While the game has no radar (which I like), the GPS/Nav eliminated the "Where are we supposed to go now?" factor, something that tends to frustrate me in many games.

We also discovered that I suck at driving hovercraft and Nathan does not. The game automatically switches who drives and who guns each time—both players do both things. It would've been nice if we could've chosen on our own each time (as players have different strengths and weaknesses). However, that's easily solved (at least in split-screen) by trading controllers.

Anyway. I love the crap out of this game. [Smile]

Played some Halo 3 with T_Smith, mack, MEC, and Vassila Cora last night. I suck compared to them, but it was still fun. [Smile] We talked about playing some Gears of War today or tonight -- just drop a post in here or shoot me a message on Live.

Added: Oh yeah, the friend I've been planning to play Ao2 with hasn't been around, so I've barely gotten to play the game at all. [Frown]

Hi, people I haven't talked to in a while.

If I could get my internet to sabilize with Xbox Live, I'd teach y'all a little somethin' with Gears of War.

They're probably doing death match. Co-op campaign gets to be a little easy, even on insane, with people who have played on Live for a reasonable amount of time.

My husband and I have been leaning toward getting XBox Live and playing - he really wants Call of Duty 4, I think it is.

We play a lot of Halo 3 in our house on split screen, it would be nice to play online. I just haven't taken the plunge because I don't know if I can afford the vortex that will suck all of our time away.

Our other favorite family game on splitscreen is Star Wars Battlefront II.

It's a simple fact that you can cheat in any game, however since there are so many people playing Halo 3, it increases the amount of cheating as well, despite any efforts to stop it.

I'm hoping to get Gears soon, I've been getting tired of only playing Halo with other people.

I am also very addicted to Mass Effect. I keep thinking I can do one more mission or assignment or explore one more planet, and then I can't figure out where the last three hours went.

If you want, Nick, you can try playing Halo with us on xbox live (us being hatrackers). At least until Mark gets Gears from Gamefly.

Yeah. Last night I thought you guys were going to play SSBB until I was informed that you can't talk to the other players. However, when the SWAT list was up, that made Halo really fun again. Lately, it's either been really fun or really frustrating with no in-between. Nathan was talking about doing some custom games to see if we can do some teamwork strategies for the maps so we all get less frustrated.

quote:

Yeah. Halo 3 even has the old standbying left over from Halo 2. There's also lagging people out, bridging, glitching, you know, same old, same old. There's also a bunch of people breaking the Truskill system by getting their first accounts up into the high forties or up to fifty, and then making a new account to go beat up on the lower ranks. So instead of facing opponents on your own skill level, you're facing people ten to twenty ranks ahead of you on skill.

Yes. I've beaten it 5 or 6 times now. I'm thinking about playing through again. I love that game. Now that I have windows XP on my iMac(finally got boot camp to work), I've been playing Half-Life 2.

Xbox has taken back burner to playing with the computer. [Smile] Let's just say I'll stop calling them "Crapples". I LOVE my iMac.

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

Yeah, I started my second playthrough yesterday and have discovered that it IS fun to play again as your character but now at a higher level.

And [Big Grin] at your new mac stance. I mean, the part at not calling them crapples anymore. PCs are good for some stuff and some people. Sorta like, um, some religions.

Back to Mass Effect, it's neat on the second playthrough because you know how things work out, so you notice little things that you didn't know before. Sort of like watching some movies a second time (like the Sixth Sense or something) and knowing the end. It's quite cool.

Oh. And since I have the full intimidate to start with, my character gets to be more of a bitch. [Big Grin]

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

I didn't start a second playthrough right away with the same character, because I discovered that if you unlock a skill during the game (i.e. use it enough to get the associated achievement), you can then add that skill as a bonus skill to a new character. So instead of playing again with my original character (Infiltrator), I started an Adept and gave him the sniper rifle skill. [Big Grin]

Optimally, what I want to do is have an Infiltrator, Vanguard, or Soldier with the Singularity skill at level 60 and ready for Mass Effect 2... but since that requires something like three more playthroughs I'm not sure I'm willing to do that. [Razz]

I've bought Gears of War, It seems alright, but I really don't enjoy going up against people who have played the game for more than a year and just getting my but kicked.

Mackillian has convinced me to get Mass Effect, I was going to wait awhile since I have plenty of games I'm playing through right now, but since she's been playing it consistently for about a month, I went ahead and bought it. I started the game on veteran difficulty and it's been pretty tough. I find I enjoy using the sniper rifle because I can one shot a lot of enemies, although getting the aiming down is tough.

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

Mass Effect=Awesome

I've got nathan playing it now, since I should really take a break after two playthroughs (and then some) and getting my renegade to 60. [Smile]

MEC, I started out on Normal because I'm a pansy. What class is your character? One thing is that your character needs to be trained in a weapon for it to have any aiming ability. I think only soldiers and infiltrators have that training. Also, once your level grows in that skill, aiming is better, along with upgrades you can attach to the sniper rifle, like a kinetic coil, frictionless materials, and other stuff (I can't remember what the earlier stability stuff is called). But it does improve a lot.

I'll add you guys.

I'm going to rent R6V2, it should arrive tomorrow, however I know Mackillian and T_Smith play it often.

My character is a soldier, I'll probably make an alternative character that's renegade as well as a different class though.

The one problem with being paragon is that I really feel that I should execute the criminals I defeat.

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

Also, as a paragon, you can't shoot monkeys with cannons. Or punch out crazy people. Or... well, I won't give away some spoilers. [Wink]

Oh, if you're a soldier, just make sure you've unlocked sniper rifles and have at least one little skill bar in there. I played Infiltrator though, so I'm not sure if you sniper is locked or unlocked at the outset.

I want to do a 3rd playthrough with another class eventually. And play it as a Paragon. Though that'll be hard, knowing the Funny that would go down as a Renegade.

However, Final Fantasy VII is next, as commanded by quite a few people who were shocked to find out that I'd never played it.

Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is a lot of fun, I highly recommend it.

Thanks for introducing me to the game, it's fun playing with you guys.

So, is anyone playing GTAIV?

I sold my 360. Lately I've been running the sidequest gauntlet that is Final Fantasy XII. And looking for a cheap copy of Shadow Hearts: Covenant.

I'm playing GTAIV. I really enjoy it, though I'm a bit annoyed at all the 9.5-10.0 ratings it has gotten. It's not *that* good and it has some fun-stealing flaws, IMO.

Man I HATE it when I clearly hold down Y so as to get in a taxi, and instead he jacks it and a cop just happens to be there thus forcing me to gun the cop down, which of course brings helicopters leaving me no choice but to shoot them down with an RPG, thus bringing SWAT down on me. All in all, after I've spent hours running from and gunning down the cops I die and have to start over from the previous save point. It's such a bloody waste of time. [Wink]

The game could use fewer F bombs, but I guess the city IS modeled on New York City.

I've found the exact opposite to be true, I never have any problem, even with four stars. All you need to do is drive real fast and poof, all the cops go away.

Anyone want to get together for some multi-player sometime? I still haven't tried it out too much yet.

I haven't tried multiplayer at all, but I'm only a couple of hours into the game. I'm dividing my attention between GTA IV and Jade Empire.

Try it with 5 stars, it's actually quite tricky to get away unless you have a predetermined escape route off a ramp or some such. Has anybody managed to get 6 stars? I think I got it once but I died seconds later so I didn't get to see if they actually call out the national guard.

It's true that often all you need is a semi straight stretch of road and you can just drive fast away from the cops. But try letting them catch up to you and then just driving away, unless you drive the wrong way through one way roads it's kinda hard to shake them. Of course you can always create a pileup behind you and that often does the trick, then you just have to evade units ahead of your position.

I've managed to escape that way with five stars now. I tried it with six, got extremely close to leaving the circle with no cops in sight, but then a civilian car crashed into me and I got knocked out and died because I had barely any health left.

The quickest way to obtain six stars is trespassing on a locked island, I guess they assume that you're a terrorist or something. I don't think you can get six stars any other way until you unlock all of the islands. In free roam mode I got six stars with T-Smith and some other friends when we all collected as much weapons and ammo as we could, and then I got an apache and flew us onto the roof of a medium sized building, then we just started blasting people. Also I don't know if it always works, but whenever we would enter the helicopter and leave we would get a complement of rockets.

T-Smith, and some other friends and I all got into a bus on free roam mode and decided to have a "party bus" were we would drive all around the central island (whatever is based on Manhattan) and shoot at cops. We got up to five stars before I accidentally drove us in a corner.

I got six stars by taking a helicopter to an island that wasn't unlocked yet. I then flew it out over the water to try and shake the wanted level but I couldn't. This was, however, an easy way to unlock one man army.

On another subject, does anybody know when Ticket to Ride is supposed to be up on Xbox arcade?

Beat the game today. I guess I'll have to spend more time online now to keep myself entertained. I'll keep an eye out for you folks.

What's Ticket to Ride?

I got the one man achievement right in the beginning of the game. I drove up to the bridge where you leave to the next island, then made sure my car was pointing away from the cops so I could shoot at them, get six stars, and run away real quick, I then drove to the safe-house and ran inside and just waited with a shotgun pointed at the front door. I got the achievement before any police showed up, but managed to survive some time longer by shooting anyone who approached.

I agree with you there.

One of the most annoying things I find are the scripted chases, where you have to keep up to some vehicle where they are literally bolted to the ground and your only option is to follow them until it ends. It's so annoying to have to dodge all the stupid crap they go through over and over because if you miss one thing you fail because you fall behind. And then on top of that, they end it the lamest possible way. I had to chase a frickin' motorcycle through the subway, while dodging trains and making a jump off a bridge, and then to end it, he slows to about five miles per hour, and eventually bumps into a taxi. There was another scripted chase I had to do so many times that I knew the path he would take, so I cut him off at one point and rammed him to try and end it, instead there is no effect on him whatsoever and I go flying off several blocks.

Limited engagement for you Rockband types. I am playing tonight, starting around 7PM. I have 144 songs, so I have a fair bit of DLC.

I am in the Hatrack Gamers group on Live, my live handle is ViolentREMs.

Hey hey hey ... I just got a 360! Yay me! I have a Live account (my name is Dakoit), but my internet is really sketchy right now. In fact, after tonight it might be gone for a couple of weeks. But yeah ... I'll have to play with some of you jatraquero's at some point in the future.

I'm down for some Halo 3, but I will admit that I'll likely be an easy kill, I don't put in the time required to be a good player.

My screen name is "TooMuchGuinness" [Smile]

How do you join the gamer group "Hatrack Gamers" ?
EDIT: Figured it out, request sent.
EDIT2: I know Guinness has more than one n, I swear! [Wall Bash] [Wink]

I don't know how I managed to miss this thread until now. I'm a lurker, but I've had my 360 for a couple of years now. It looks like I don't have any of the popular titles in here. I usually play little stuff in arcade like Marbleblast Ultra, Uno, Catan, etc.

I'm currently working through GTAIV for the second time after beating it once and all of my progress getting wiped when I tried retrieving a gamertag. It was messy and frustrating. I started from scratch with a new profile because of it. So I'm slowly going through the achievements in all of my games.

Anywho, my tag is "AlleyBetwixtCRO"
I'll request the Hatrack Gamers group next time I'm on!

I believe each gamertag gets a free month, so you can test it out on an extra tag if you want.

Oh, and I'd love to play, but my 360 is broken...again. Yes, it seems when I sent in my 360 for having received the red ring of death, Microsoft promptly returned to me a broken refurbished system.

So I'm looking for a game I can play with my girlfriend. She's not really a big gamer by any stretch of the imagination, but we're wanting to enjoy my new system together. I was hoping that Civil War game the History Channel put out was two player, but alas. She's played Halo and doesn't mind it, but doesn't really like that much. She's not into any sort of complexity really. I'm just looking for a simple, engaging, fun 2 player game. Right now the only thing I'm aware of on that front is Marvel Ultimate Alliance, but I think she'd get bored with it.

Any suggestions?

Buy a Wii. Seriously. A lot of people who don't really like video games that much enjoy it because of the simplicity of the controls. Playstation 3 and Xbox360 controls are very daunting to the non-gaming inclined. [Smile]

I think you would be hard pressed to find a game that is simple on either of those two systems.

Any of the Lego games would be good choices -- Lego Star Wars, Lego Indiana Jones, or Lego Batman later this year. I played Lego Star Wars II on the 360 with my girlfriend and we had a blast.

We've also gotten hooked on N+, which is an XBLA download. Check out the demo with your girlfriend and see if she likes the co-op.

Has anyone else tried Braid?

It's a new arcade title that was just released that's been getting some controversy over it's $15 price tag (most arcade titles cost $10).

The game is essentially a puzzle platformer that has some homages to early platformers like super mario and donkey kong, while including a time control element. Each world has a unique special rule also.

I've been playing the game for a bit and I highly recommend at least trying the demo.

I've been playing and greatly enjoying Braid. So far I've made it through all the worlds, and put together all the puzzles for two of them. Now I'm working on finishing the other three so that I can finish the game. But I'm not too concerned about finishing it quickly. It's nice to just sit back and enjoy the beautiful levels and relaxing music.

Have you found any of the secret stars?

I found one by myself, then looked up the rest.

Edit to add: Oh, and I just found out target is having a sale on 1600 point cards for $15. which brings the price of Braid to $11.25, although this would then also bring the price of most arcade titles to $7.50.
