I had no idea this was even being considered for a movie. And from what I can see, it's looks absolutely bizarre.

There's been studios trying to make a Where the Wild Things Are movie for decades. I hadn't heard this one got moved to 2009/2010 though. Drat. [Frown]

I'm wondering if this was test footage to see how the creature FX pan out...because the kid and wolf costume look nothing like the "Max" seen in the official still released many months back. Hmmm....

Reading the AICN talkback, I see that Moriarty and the rest are praising how the use of a random field makes this "look like the real world, not a fantasyland!"

Makes me wonder how long it's been since they looked at Maurice Sendak's illustrations, where most of the action takes place on an unrealistic, twilight tropical island in a deliciously creepy dreamscape.

(My fault for paying attention to the AICN guys, I know.)

At this point, I'm not too wild about the actor in the wolf costume. Seems too...innocent. As I recall, the character was more of a troublemaker than a family-friendly child star.

From AICN, Spike Jonze (the director) explains the clip:

“that was a very early test with the sole purpose of just getting some footage to Ben our vfx (visual effects) supervisor to see if our vfx plan for the faces would work. The clip doesn’t look or feel anything like the movie, the Wild Thing suit is a very early cringy prototype, and the boy is a friend of ours Griffin who we had used in a Yeah Yeah Yeahs video we shot a few weeks before. We love him, but he is not in the actually film...Oh and that is not a wolf suit, its a lamb suit we bought on the internet. Talk to you later...“

Robots are the best. I wish it was a clip from the actual film; it was awesome. I would have been very enthusiastic about it.

Actually, that gives me a lot more hope than the AICN-goons gushing over how the locations "Don't look like fantasy, which means it's brilliant!"

The book is weird, dark, and unforgettable.

Which means its well within being faithful for the film to also be a bit disturbing.

On the other hand, the studio wants to make money...and things that are creepy in a book can be outright deal-killing in live action.
