One of the maddening things about the Oscars is that a lot of the short and foreign language subjects are not accessible to the average film fan.

Hence, I'm very glad to see this dark yet whimsical adaptation of Peter and the Wolf get posted on YouTube.

It's quite impressive, especially keeping in mind how time-consuming and maddening such intricate stop motion animation is.

Advisory warning: Violent, somewhat disturbing imagery...especially if one is only familiar with the Disney version.

There's also a non-traditional ending, which I personally thought was brilliant. [Cool]

About half-way through (the rest will have to wait until after my coworker's current appointment is done), and very much enjoying it.

I was starting to get a bit antsy before the music kicked in at 5:45. [Wink]

Also about halfway through and enjoying it, though it's not what I expected from how it started (I'll elaborate when it's done).

I loved the Disney version from back in the day.

Edit to add: interesting take on it, I liked it. From how it started, I really thought it was going to be some sort of new agey 21st century city take on it, like, the guy with the balloons was actually the wolf, only in the form of a child predator or something.

I loved it when the kid literally took his gloves off.

I loved that they made us wait for the music. The themes are so familiar. The anticipation made the pay-off more special for me. [Smile]

I kinda wondered that too, until I saw they were gradually introducing all the animal characters.

I thought that the no music beginning dragged on too long but it might feel different in a theater or at least on a large screen than it feels on YouTube.

Once the music started, I thought it was great.

I just watched it twice on the 2007 Academy Award Nominated DVD that came out last week.

I thought it was awesome. I have vague childhood memories of the animated one, and liked this one more. I thought the movement of the characters, for the most part, and especially the boy, were very well done. It all seemed natural. And I loved the boy's eyes, and some of the facial expressions he had.

I'm pacing myself with the other films on this DVD. I don't want to go through them all too quickly.
