Does anybody still use Hatrack Chat? Is there a chat room that people frequent?
Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :
I pop in from time to time, but not with any regularity.
Posted by EmpSquared (Member # 10890) on :
It used to be fairly poppin'. I've been popping in during my hiatus from Hatrack the last couple years and it's dwindled.
Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :
Definitely has dwindled, but still is interesting from time to time.
Posted by krynn (Member # 524) on :
OK im too lazy to look it up, but if anyone could post a link to it or the channel/server... ill check it out. danke.

It's an AIM chatroom named "Hatrack Chat".
If you're new to AIM the way to get in is to add yourself to your own buddy list, then right click on your name in your buddy list and choose "Send Chat Invitation". When the box pops up replace the long string of numbers in the chatroom name with the words "Hatrack Chat" and click OK.
If you don't have AIM yet then download an old version, not Triton which sux. I've got AIM 5.9.3861 with AdHack 4.14 and I'm quite happy with it. I think you can download it off the AdHack page if it's still up. Let me find you a link. Here you go. Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :
It is ok if it changes it from "Hatrack Chat" to "hatrackchat"
Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :
Yes! It does that automatically but it's still the same place. Good point, breyer!

I just added it, so I'll be checking it from time to time.
Posted by krynn (Member # 524) on :

I disagree. Use Pidgin (formerly know as Gaim). Download
Another option is Gmail chat, which as of last week supports AIM chats.
Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :
I can't get buddy chat to work lately. I was in the chat room the other day talking to someone and it abruptly kicked me out, and since then when I've tried to invite myself in, the request times out and it boots me again.
And ideas? AOL's help site was beyond unhelpful.
Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :
You're using AOL's software?
Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :
I have AIM Triton, which I'm sorry I ever downloaded. The old AIM was just fine. But yes, I'm using AOL's software.
Posted by Threads (Member # 10863) on :
I use Trillian

Option 1, download the old AOL software Tatiana linked to.
Option 2, switch to Pidgin.
Guess which one I'd suggest?
Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :
I'm always hesitant to download new software to my computer, though I suppose I've already broken that dam by poisoning my computer with AOL software to begin with.
I've been considering getting Gmail for awhile now and getting away from AOL, which I use for email, but I don't know anything about how their IM service works, especially how it works with AIM chatters.
Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :
The reviews I've seen have been mediocre for the Gmail/AIM chat. (Straight Gmail chat is pretty good, though.)
Gmail, OTOH, is really great. I'd offer you an invite, but you really don't need one anymore. OTOH, if you want one, I still have 91.
And Pidgin is open source, so downloading it is considerably safer than many things.
Posted by adfectio (Member # 11070) on :
I love pidgin. Admittedly, it's a little more taxing on your system than some other clients, but it covers all your basis. As I write this I'm signed into 2 Aim accounts, an MSN, and ICQ, a Yahoo, A Google Talk, and an IRC channel. It's a simple design, so don't expect anything fancy, but it is an incredibly stable application. There are a lot of plug-ins to make it behave pretty much how you want it.
But... admittedly, I'm a little Biased. I've been using it since it was Gaim 1.3
Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :
Hooray! It let me back in.
Maybe chatrooms are just fickle?
Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :
AIM certainly is.
Posted by Pegasus (Member # 10464) on :
I could not figure out a way to get into a chatroom using gmail/aim, so I just d/l'ed the aim software instead. It works, occasionaly. It really is terrible though.

1....2......3 CHAT!
Come on people, some of you have to be awake.
Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :
I'm awake, but I don't chat. Maybe we can do something else.

I didn't like GAIM. It didn't seem to handle font sizes well. When I had a reasonably-sized font on my own screen, it appeared HUGE on other people's.
Posted by Marek (Member # 5404) on :
there are people in there, it's kind of a suprise.

My dad had this issue too. IIRC, I found an add-on that took care of it. If you're interested, I can try to find it again.

There's a pretty good chat going on right now, if anyone cares to join (hint hint ADAM!)

On AIM friend yourself and invite yourself to the chatroom hatrack chat.
Posted by cmc (Member # 9549) on :
I would have - but I just spent forever trying to figure out how to invite myself. It's the first time I've tried on a Mac and I can't for the life of me figure it out...
Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :
I can't figure out how to do invites from pidgin, but can invite myself. Some systems are weird.
Posted by Nick (Member # 4311) on :
I can't figure out how on iChat, I'm having issues with my iMac joining hatrack chat also.
