How fun must it be to rehearse for Kirk? It's a scenery-chewer's dream part. The more you ham it up, the better.

Yup. I don't watch a whole lot of TV. I don't follow Star Trek. I'm frequently taken by surprise when it comes to movies.

They are making the movie because no matter how bad it is, the fans will still pay money for it. It's a dream come true.

I just can't think of Karl Urban as anyone but Caesar or Cupid, in the Xena/Hercules universe. I don't know if I could handle him as McCoy.

Other than some of the really more recent stuff he's been in, he's really just Eomer to me, who is probably my favorite LOTR character.

I love Star Trek... or at least I used to. The Original Series is good fun, and I still love TNG, but Braga and Brannon killed it all with Voyager and Enterprise. On the one hand I think the movie could be cool - I do like the idea of giving the series a fresh start. On the other hand, it sounds as if they are attempting to keep some of the continuity by using some kind of alternate universe story and they are also apparently invoking the old Star Trek plot device of time travel. So it's nice to see fresh ideas being brought to the table.
And besides all that, I'm just not sure anyone cares. Battlestar Galactica currently does Star Trek better than Star Trek ever did.

If I had to choose between Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek TNG/Star Trek DS9, I'd have a hard go of it, but I think ultimately I'd land on the side of the two Star Treks. VOY, Enteprise and TOS I can do without (though I do find TOS HILARIOUS these days), but DS9 and TNG? Man, a world without Picard and the Enterprise crew and the DS9 crew seems like a dark, sad place.
Luckily we don't have to make that choice. And I might add, BSG doesn't do Trek better than Trek did, they are two totally different takes on sci-fi.
Besides, I refuse to live without this because then someone never would have made THIS (this second one I got from my best friend's Science Fiction professor, yeah that's right, they teach Star Trek in college).

Am I the only one that finds the whole notion of Star Trek prequels to be somewhat antithetical to the whole spirit of the thing? I'm no Roddenberry fanboy (DS9 is my favorite of the series, after all), but Trek was always about looking forward, using science fiction as a lens for examining how society may (or may not) evolve. The very notion of "recapturing what worked before" isn't just missing the point- it's grabbing the point, turning it around, and firing it straight backwards.

I disagree, Tarrsk. I've never been at all impressed with the "message" episodes of Star Trek, which were never as revolutionary or ground-breaking as some seem to think they were. Frankly, most of them were trite, preachy, and dreadful.
However, I do love many of the characters...and when the stories focused on -that- element, I found lots to enjoy.
From the sound of things, the film will be a character study of Spock, arguably the most interesting TOS character.
Who knows what will happen with the TV Trek? At this point it's pretty much dead...but a sucessful film franchise just may bring about a renewed interest in Trek projects across the board. The possible net-exclusive "moving it forward" animated series is far more likely to be greenlit, among other things. Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :
The preachy episodes early on I thought were bad, but DS9 did them right. "Far Beyond the Stars" is easily a "preachy" episode, and I think it's one of the best episodes of any show ever on television.
I don't mind the reimagining. Frankly, I think TOS had a lot of potential but was pretty horrible unless you're looking for a good laugh. So if they want to do it all over again, that's fine with me, it's better than trying to mess with TOS by adding in fancy new effects. That really won't save it.
Personally I'd like to see a show that deals with different aspects of Federation society. Enterprise went about as far back as you can go, and by far people didn't really take to it, and I think after Voyager everything is pretty wacky. But there is plenty to work with that doesn't involve actually being in STARFLEET dealing with a command crew. I think they need to broaden their horizons a bit.
