I know people here have played scrabble games online, where you can arrange a room with people you know. I've looked online and all the sites just have downloadable versions. Scrabulous.com lets me play online, but I can't create my own game.

Does anyone still have the link(s)?

You can play Literati on Yahoo. It's basically the same thing. That's where my friends and I play.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Games.com is where we used to go. But they don't have real Scrabble anymore.

Posted by Eaquae Legit (Member # 3063) on :

I think I may have figured out scrabulous. It's not a pretty interface, though.

Posted by vonk (Member # 9027) on :

Interesting. Just lost my first game.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

Is there a timelimit that you must create your word within? That's how Yahoo Chess worked, I'm just afraid to commit to a game if there is a time frame you have to operate within. (I'm at work)

As an aside does anybody want to all join the same scrabble game sometime this afternoon/evening? I love Scrabble.

Posted by vonk (Member # 9027) on :

I think you can choose to have a time limit or not, and set it to what you want.

I'd like to play, but I'm proving not very good.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

I'll tickle this thread when I get back from work.

Posted by Eaquae Legit (Member # 3063) on :

Scrabulous seems to have an option for no time limit, if I can just get it to work.

Posted by vonk (Member # 9027) on :

can you set the time to "0" in "seek"?

Gah! They let a player use "MIDI"! It's an acronym, you can't use acronyms!

Edit: and foreign languages! crazy!
Edit2: nevermind. I forgot "si" was a musical tone and "midi" is apparently some kind of skirt. Crazy English language.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

OK I'm home, anybody up for some scrabble?

Posted by vonk (Member # 9027) on :

I'm in the intermediate room looking for a game.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

I don't see that room.

Indeed. Slightly longer than a mini.

It's in the Robot Room. But... now I'm going home. Maybe tomorrow.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

Lost my first two games, and then ran my opponents clock out when she spent 2 minutes on one word. I felt so dirty winning that way, but it felt so satisfying to have a one-three letter word ready to go as soon as she placed her tiles and then see her panic when within a second it was her turn again [Big Grin]

I got the CD version of Literati years ago. It is excellent. Usually I select the two player option, with one player being the computer. When I set the computer's play level at maximum, I can hardly ever beat it. Maybe once or twice in a year I might beat it--and that's only if I luck out and get a huge score to start with in the first turn. Usually I resign myself to just seeing how close to the computer's score I can come, being beaten by less than 100 points. And I have a large vocabulary, and am a good speller! It also grates on me how I might have to take five or more minutes to scope out the best play in a given turn, and then the computer comes out with its turn--that scores higher than I just did--in a second or two.

What I would like is an option to have the computer review the play I just made, and then make the play it would have made. My version doesn't have this option.

Anyone want to play a few games on scrabulous sometime this afternoon?

I get off work at about 4:30EST, we could even get a multiplayer game going.

Posted by vonk (Member # 9027) on :

I'm on now if anyone can play. I don't know about this afternoon.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

bleh! I can't possibly avoid looking conspicuous while playing scrabble at work.

My expression of discomfort that I get when I have a Q but no U is impossible to miss.

Posted by vonk (Member # 9027) on :

Haha, I feel ya. Check out the list of acceptable two letter words. There's a couple with Q and no U. I've never heard the words, but their there.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

And there's always my favorite Scrabble word: qat.

Too bad y'all are probably not interested in Scrabble during evening PST.

Posted by Sharpie (Member # 482) on :

Qat and qi can be your friends. Then there are qadi, qaid, qanat... lots of them [Smile] . Mbaqanga...

Ron Lambert, I can only warn you with extreme warningness that when you start to go down the path of having the computer examine your moves, you will be on a road that leads to having boxes of flashcards and anagramming street signs and, egad, real life tournaments. I'm warning you.

Posted by Squish (Member # 9191) on :

I would be! I'm pretty bad at Scrabble though. Games with me tend to be entertaining because of the random words I try to sneak in.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Cool, Squish. Maybe tonight?

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

I have a dinner to go to around 10:00pm EST. I'd love to play anytime before then, if you guys are up for it?

Posted by vonk (Member # 9027) on :

I just got to put down "traverse" using all my letters. Had to pass three times until I could use it. But it was worth it. [Big Grin]

Posted by MidnightBlue (Member # 6146) on :

You could play Subway's scrabble game.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

I'm playing Scrabble right now, if somebody wants in just bump the thread, I'll check it after every game.

Posted by vonk (Member # 9027) on :

what room are you in? what's your player name?

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

just finished a game

I am BlackBlade

I am in the Oasis.

Come to Robot Room, intermediate.

I'll leave a game open for you, what's your handle?

Posted by vonk (Member # 9027) on :

nickvonk. i'm in a speed game now. in the same room

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

ok for some reason firefox hates scrabulous, but I'll have a game setup and waiting for you to join.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

Vonk beat me just barely! I shall never be vanquished again!

Anyone else around want to play a game?

I'll wait about 5-10 minutes for a response.

Posted by Jon Boy (Member # 4284) on :

Anyone up for a game right now?

Posted by vonk (Member # 9027) on :

Pfft! "Barely"! Six points is not barely. Ok, maybe it is. Good game though. Anyone wanna play? I'll be in the intermediate room.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

Yeah I'll get on right now.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

I'm playing scrabble for the next while, if anybody wants to play a game I'd love to.

Also, Vonk destroyed me this morning.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Anyone?

I think this is going to become a new pet phrase of mine. (somebody probably needs to go warn my friends not to communicate with me)

Rivka do you have a handle on scrabulous? That makes setting up games loads better as we can all see when the other is online.

I'm, BlackBlade as you could probably surmise.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

I don't think I have time for a game now. Sorry. (And no Scrabulous handle yet, but I'll get one.)

Posted by Pegasus (Member # 10464) on :

I play at Scrabulous.com a bit when I can find the time. My screen-name is Malkin. Here is a screenshot of a game that I played when I realized that I could play a rather familiar word to all of us... Also the 3 other people playing were OSC fans, so I got a good reaction from them.

If anyone wants to play I'm in The Robot's Room: Intermediate as nickvonk.

I wish I could get away with playing at work.

Agreed... although I probably could get away with playing at work. I wouldn't get much work done. Perhaps upon arriving home.

Posted by vonk (Member # 9027) on :

BB, or anyone else, wanna play? I'll be in The Robot's Room: Intermediate.

Edit: Intermediate's full right now, so make the Riverside Cafe, as that seemed appropriate.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

I'll see what I can do once I get back from school. I've got to go there and sort some stuff out after work.

Me too.

Which reminds me, Tom, it's your move in our Scrabble game on Facebook.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

Congrats on "DODGIEST," BTW. I was genuinely impressed. [Smile]

Posted by Primal Curve (Member # 3587) on :

Thanks. It was a good one. I thought I was screwed when I realized I left the triple word score wide open. I'm glad I had something.

Posted by Jon Boy (Member # 4284) on :

Facebook has Scrabble?

Posted by Primal Curve (Member # 3587) on :

It's a special Scrabulous application for Facebook. It's sort of like Play By Social Networking Scrabble.

Posted by Jon Boy (Member # 4284) on :

Okay, I've got a Facebook account now. Can anyone explain how the Scrabble thing works?

Posted by Primal Curve (Member # 3587) on :

You have to add the application. I can't remember how to do it the normal way. I just got a notification when Tom added the application and I followed a link on the notification to add it myself. If I had access to Facebook at work, I'd help you.

Posted by Jon Boy (Member # 4284) on :

I just found the application and added it, but it looks like it's offline for maintenance right now.

Anybody up for some Facebook Scrabble?

Posted by Eaquae Legit (Member # 3063) on :

I can't find it.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

I'd be up for normal scrabulous scrabble, I get off work in about 15-20 minutes.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

My scrabulous handle is BlackBlade

What are you folks?

Holy crap, Primal. A bingo and a quadruple word score? Who knew your Scrabble-fu was so powerful? Are you sure you're not using a word builder? *eyes suspiciously*

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Almost, almost, I am sufficiently tempted to join Facebook.

A quadruple word score you say? I didn't realized those existed... I've only seen doubles and triples on my board.

Posted by Jon Boy (Member # 4284) on :

Play a word that spans two double word scores, and voila, quadruple word score.

Posted by Primal Curve (Member # 3587) on :

Pure luck. When I play scrabble IRL, I can strategize with the placement. With Scrabulous, they don't label the squares, so I'm never quite sure what they mean. I was as surprised as you by that score.

Tom is currently kicking my butt (despite the aforementioned DODGIEST). So my Scrabble-Fu is weak.

Posted by Jon Boy (Member # 4284) on :

The bonus squares are all color-coded, so you just have to know what each one means. Blue squares are letter bonuses, red ones are word bonuses, dark ones are triple, and light ones are double.

And I figured it was mostly just luck. I played a game once where the first team started off with a bingo and then got another bingo on their second turn. Starting off with a 100-point advantage over the other three teams pretty much seals the game, though Ruth and I did give them a run for their money.

Ah yes, I refer to such as a Double-Double. And two triples as a Triple-Triple. The second has only ever happened to me once though.

Posted by plaid (Member # 2393) on :

Played my best game EVER last night. 658. Five bingos. [Cool]

Chances are that I'll never score that much again in my whole life. Freaky, freaky game.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

OK could somebody explain to me how you get a bingo in Scrabble? I've never heard of that.

Posted by plaid (Member # 2393) on :

Bingo = when you play all 7 tiles, and you get a 50-point bonus. Kind of a dumb word for it -- I like "epiphany" better.

Oh! See I knew what an epiphany was, I'd never heard it called a bingo, I kept looking at the scrabble board trying to figure out how you could possibly get a bingo on the stupid thing.

Holy crap. I'm not sure I've ever gotten more than one in a game.

Posted by plaid (Member # 2393) on :

Yow. Had another 5-bingo/epiphany game last night. (But only 590 this time... [Wink] )

Really weird. I mean, I'm happy to be doing this good, but it's not like I've been studying up or anything, 3 in a game has been my record for years and years, and suddenly I get two 5-bingo games...

Posted by Jon Boy (Member # 4284) on :

Is it okay if I hate you now?

Posted by Sharpie (Member # 482) on :

Those are nice scores, Plaid.

Have any of you guys tried Scrabble Blitz at Scrabulous? I find it too addictive, because the rounds are only four minutes and I keep telling myself "just one more round..."
