We've all heard of the breakdown of the family unit, and lately even I can see some disturbing things going on too. Just heard on NPR, for example, of the idea of paying children to stay in school, ie not learning to be empowered but because you are a free agent beholden to none.

What is the primary cause (or causes) for this?

What makes you think he family unit was ever more solid than it is today for anything but a short period of time (if at all?)

After all, in the 19th century, a fourth of children lived in orphanages. Just as a single example. (I may have confused my facts with something else. If someone can correct me, that'd be perfectly fine.)
