What are some cool, quirky, fun, or creative ideas you have for dates?
I'd post mine but I'm not sure I have any!
I'll try anyway: * balloon ride * dancing, in the park to a boom box * playground trip

Putting together and performing the "play within a play" in Midsummer Night's Dream.

skydiving?
I've never done it.

I did something similar to that with my last girlfriend, it was on the deck on the back of my house and I had some friends come by to string up white Christmas lights while we were at dinner. Worked out perfectly.
I had originally planned to do it at a park, but the parks around here all close before night time, which makes stringing up lights and music kind of difficult, but the idea in general is a good romantic one. You'll need an accomplice or two depending on the scale.

Doing a circuit of the stationary/pen stores in your city.
(My friends. I've never done with with a girlfriend.)

Gondola ride. It's a little strange, at first, having an Italian man you don't know singing as he propels you around a lake, but once you get a little wine going, it's all good

Science club. Identify as much flora and fauna as you can in a two meter square area.
I was never very good on dates. *grin

Kite flying.
Serving together at a soup kitchen, and then going out to a Vietnamese noodle restaurant.
Going to a church class together.
Canoeing together.
Going to an open/farmers market, buying exotic things (like dandelion salad) and making dinner together.
Attend a high school baseball game, and root for both sides.
Find a class that teaches something neither of you know anything about.
Go TP someone's house.

Except for the last, that list is divine.

Mormon youths in my area often get together and toilet paper their leaders' homes.
It happened to us recently. I looked out the window at all the toilet paper on the lawn and thought-- 'Oh Heavens. I really am an adult now.'

Here are a couple of non-good ideas, which I thought might be good: dance lessons and rock climbing. Both lots of fun, but you spend too much time away from the other person, so they're not much for a date.

Not true of ballroom dance lessons MC - even if you learn the steps seperately, you still get to dance together once you know how.
Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

You are not truely rooting for one side unless you are positively putrid in your behavior towards their opponents.
But then again sports events would be VERY interesting if both sides could be just as easily cheered or boo'd on a play.

Ahhh ...
In the backwoods of Indiana, it is a sign of public humiliation for disliked kids in grade and high school. At least, it was that way when I was growing up. Never was TP'd myself or TP'd anyone else, but my friend and I did take pity on the girl down the street, so we tried to take down someone else's TP'ing before she woke up to see the humiliation.
Er, it now occurs to me that this may not have been the best candidate for "random acts of kindness," especially since we never thought to tell anyone why we were out there taking it down.
Ah, well.

*nod* In Indiana, certainly, TP'ing someone's home was a sign of contempt.

Build-A-Bear Workshop works like magic if you're willing to shell out some bucks.
Posted by Goody Scrivener (Member # 6742) on :
I love love love Build-a-Bear. And depending on what you pick, it's not really all that expensive compared to other date options. The bears start at $10 and outfits are as little as $5.
Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :
Man, your "works like magic" equals my "absolutely putrid." Think long and hard about if your date wouldlike this before proposing it.

All 5 of the girls I've been there with loved it.

Go to the Driving Range and hack at a bucket of balls for a few hours. Really fun, especially if neither of you know how to golf.
Go to a bookshop and look for each other's favorite books.

Dress up on halloween and smash pumpkins to the music of The Smashing Pumpkins.
Go to a deserted playground and swing on the swings, slide down the slide, climb on the monkey bars, and generally act like kids. Hide if grownups come.
Play in a fountain until completely soaking wet. Alternative is to play in the rain (if it's not thundering) splashing in puddles, dancing around, preferably while singing "Singing in the Rain", "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" any other song you like. It's even better if this happens spontaneously, completely unplanned.
Explore the steam tunnels beneath the city, and walk on the "do not walk on this path after dark" path after dark.
Feed ducks, fish, geese, birds, or any other wild animals.
Sing harmony in a parking deck. Listen to the cool echoes.
Push each other around in a grocery cart in a parking lot, the one pushing should jump on the back and ride, too.

Ahh, CT. Don't worry, that's the kind of geeky thing I would enjoy. Which also explains why I'm not good with romantic suggestions.
Posted by Lupus (Member # 6516) on :
well, I have gone things like going bowling and playing tennis with girls I have dated.
I think bowling is good, because it doesn't matter if you are bad, if you can laugh at yourself, it can still be fun.

Make a CD of romantic songs, find an out of the way late at night (boat ramp) and dance under the stars.

We only toilet papered the people we liked. Wow. I seriously can't comprehend...

I think bowling is fun if you go in a group. If it's one-on-one, there's very little time to actually interact.
I also would never do a Build-a-Bear date.
And I will totally second Tatiana's suggestion. That was ridiculously fun.
Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :
Celaeno? Do mean the pumpkin smashing and are you the person who told me about that? It sounded like the greatest idea for a date! If you're who I think you are, I had no idea you were posting here! But I'm glad!
<goes back to read all Celaeno's other posts>
Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :
Okay, nevermind, Celaeno, short research indicates you aren't who I thought you were. Which suggestion did you mean?

It was a vicious tradition. Sometimes people would hide and watch to see the person they despised having to pull the TP down, making the humiliation complete.
These days, it'd be on the Net in video.

i think it depends on whether its one of the first dates or dates u go on with someone you've been with for a while.
some first date ideas ive enjoyed: Miniture Golf
Rennisance Fair
know it sounds lame, but middle of the night trips to Waffle House and Walmart

I participated in a "Fifty Cheap Dates" idea-thon back in February; you can read that blog entry here. A lot of what I came up with are L.A. specific and many cater to couples with kids, but some may be inspiring for others.

TP'ing works both ways in southeast Michigan.
I'd say 7 times out of 10 people TP'd houses of people they liked as a joke, my mom used to think it was hilarious when the soccer team TP'd our house because of my brother, so long as he cleaned it all up afterwards. But every now and then you'd see someone getting TP'd out of spite.
But generally when you want to show contempt for someone around here, you egg their house, or their car. Or in one specific instance, I remember in high school as a "joke" for drama club, the lead on the school musical had his car broken into and covered with motor oil, and the front yard of his house was covered in tuna fish and spaghettios, which smelled something fierce and I hear was impossible to clean up.

Find a cool landmark in your area and visit it.
Walk around Barnes and Nobles with a hot beverage, discussing music, books, and movies
Each of you rent a movie the other one hasn't seen, and watch them together.
Make each other mix CDs of your favorite songs and listen to them.
(those last two might come later in a relationship, but they're still fun)
Go out to eat (nice restaurant or sandwich shop or whatever) and both order something you've never tried before.

Two of my friends went on a date where they took a cooking class together. They said it was great.

In my world, TPing someone's house was a sign of popularity and affection. We TPed our seminary teacher's house ALL THE TIME. The cheerleaders' houses got TPed constantly.

It's like the Bizarro version of Indiana, as if cars ran on dreams and money grew on the trees.
Posted by gsim1337 (Member # 10168) on :
Some of my sisters friends TP'd our house once and put peanut butter on the cars, but my dad tracked them down (they had called my sister's cell at about 1 am) and made them clean it all up. They also rake and mowed the yard and all the other yard work we would have had to do that day.

I have a memory of reading about one hatracker TP'ing another hatracker's house. Jon Boy was the perpetrator, I think, and Pat the victim. Or at least, at the time I remember thinking it was a weird thing to do to your friend. Now that i hear that there's a whole faction of the population that considers it friendly and/or an honor, though...it all makes sense.
Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :
We called it rolling someone's yard and it was a sign of affection, and also just a silly fun thing to do. We also would throw open bottles of dishwashing liquid into someone's pool as a prank, to get them all bubbly.

Yankees are weird.

If throwing toilet paper onto someone's house, lawn, and foliage and leaving it for them to clean up as a sign of AFFECTION isn't weird, then i don't believe there's any meaningful definition of the word.

Gun range.
Wander around downtown while the bars/clubs are getting out and people watch/make fun of drunk people.
Late night picnic somewhere where you have to trespass to get there. Roofs of buildings are fun, as are closed parks, construction zones and random people's back yards.

Portland is the best place for any kind of date. (First, casual, romantic, etc.)
I've been on dates to Powell's book store (the huge one that takes up an entire city block and is three stories tall.)
There are zillions of scenic walks or hikes for evening or day trips.
The Grotto (or any other old church) has regular vespers and masses in Latin that are free to attend. That's fun in the summer because it's so beautiful there. The masses are like a free concert, and so lovely. (I'm completely a nerd, I know.)
Polaroid scavenger hunts are good for double or group dates. Each couple gets a polaroid or digital camera and a list of things to take pictures of around town. (Someone's belly button ring, a person with pink hair, a dog peeing on a fire hydrant, whatever.) You have to meet back at a certain time to see who got the most pictures on the list.
Soup kitchen nights are fun for double dates too. Any kind of service activities are a good time.

Agreed. And I would hate having to drain and refill a swimming pool because someone thought soaping it was a sweet thing to do.
Posted by Qaz (Member # 10298) on :
I think there's a country song about that. "If throwing toilet paper onto someone's house, lawn, and foliage and leaving it for them to clean up as a sign of AFFECTION is wrong, I don't want to be right!"
So, for things to do on dates: TP'ing and building teddy bears are both out. Check.
