I was actually thinking about the fact that there was no African American princess in the picture a few days ago. Perhaps my thoughts were intercepted?
Anyhoot, to tell everyone the truth, I'm not sure I have much hope in this project, or Disney anymore. Although I admit that Rapunzel looks promising.

I'm guessing Disney's lack of African-American princesses is/was partially due to the scarcity of monarchies in the US.

Naysayers should keep in mind that both Hercules and Treasure Planet came out in the dark postLion King period...when the box office returns made the Disney corporate people notice they made animated films, and suddenly the "money" people began interfering with the creative people.
The creative people also went a bit crazy themselves...there's a film called Dream On, You Crazy Dreamer! that gives an excellent view of the boom and bust of Disney's animation studio.

Going over the list of Disney feature cartoons though I was surprised at how many I love. I was trying to pick a worst 5 but found that I couldn't easily do so.
The Black Cauldron, however, is an abomination and should have all copies and originals destroyed. I hope for the day that The Prydain Chronicles get a proper film treatment, animated or otherwise.

Yes, I forgot to mention that. I can't think of a single direct-to-video Disney movie that is better than Brother Bear or Home on the Range. They are probably all better than The Black Cauldron though.
To be fair, if I had seen The Black Cauldron without having read The Prydain Chronicles I might have enjoyed it. I have tried giving it a fair chance but those books are so ingrained in me that I don't think I can be objective about the cartoon.

Back to Hercules...I don't remember much about it, but that it had the most charming and effective music. The gospel feel and clever lyrics still make me grin when I think of them. *grin*
I am not looking forward to a movie about a princess with music by Randy Newman. Is it just me? Ugh.

Pocahantas was originally going to be a far, far different film.
Then Beauty and the Beast got nominated for best picture. when it lost, Jeff K. (not yet gone for Dreamworks) became obsessed with creating an animated film that would appeal to the Academy. I really liked Emperor's New Groove. I thought that and Lilo & Stitch were the only truly good movies to come out of Disney since the Winnie the Pooh shorts of the 70's.

I also detested Winnie Pooh. I loved the character design, but the story lines were rather bland and the characters themselves were just too stupid.

P.S. I loved the Black Cauldron, I don't care what anyone says. I also read the Chronicles of Prydain, mind you. I guess the reason I loved it was because it wasn't one of those "happy-happy let's sing a song and the sadness will go away on it's own" kind of movie.
Oh, and while I've not seen all of Cinderella III, I've seen most of it and strangely, I liked it. It seems like it was actually one of the few good sequels like Down Under. For one thing, they really kept the character of the Stepmother. She's a total B*%#$ in that movie. Especially the part where she's like, "Oh, and...pick up that broken glass."

Hunchback had, by far, the best music out of any of the Disney cartoon films, so I wouldn't exactly call it worthless. Wasn't kiddie music, though. The film failed 'cause they tried to take a rather tragic story, full of adult themes, and turn it into a kid's movie.
Later, the film was turned into an *adult* musical in Germany to critical acclaim. I've never seen the show, but I do have the soundtrack - and it is without a doubt the best musical I have ever heard (helps that I know German, although most of they lyrics say basically the same thing). I wish that Disney would bring it to Broadway, but since it's rather un-Disneyish - Esmeralda dies, and Frollo is pushed to his death by Quasi - I doubt it ever will.

Really? I think the original Winnie the Pooh shorts are probably the best thing that Disney has ever created. They capture the spirit and the humour of the books perfectly!

I agree that Emperor's New Groove was better than Lilo & Stitch. The Little Mermaid took a great fairy tale and replaced all the beautiful bits from it with kitsch. As movies Beauty and the Beast as well as the Lion King were both somewhere in between okay and good. In fact none of these three films were truly bad, it's just that they have no place amongst the truly great children animations such as Disney's Winnie the Pooh, Peter Pan, Snow White, the old Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck shorts, Miyazaki movies such as My Neighbour Totoro or Spirited Away, or the old Russian version of Snow Queen. (I haven't seen Mulan so I can't comment on how good that is.)
