Disney returns to 2-D animation and to fairy tales after an extended hiatus!

Hmmm. This makes me wonder when (if ever) we'll see films like the long-in-development Rapunzel, or the on-again-off-again attempt to adapt The Snow Queen.

*gasp* You left out the most important part: it's a musical!!

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

The part of me that's seen Peter Pan 2, The Little Mermaid 2, and others...is cynical and expects nothing good to come of this.

The part of me that loves Beauty and the Beast more every time I see it is a little bit excited.

Posted by Puffy Treat (Member # 7210) on :

Yeah, but a musical with the music supplied by Randy Newman. All the songs will sound exactly the same. [Wink]

Hooray! *parties*

Here's hoping it's good...

Incidently, I love how you keep us all updated on the Disney (and other) movie news, Puffy Treat. [Smile]

But, they'll have a really good sameness!

Posted by MyrddinFyre (Member # 2576) on :

It's about time they had an African American princess, they've had every other kind of female ethnicity under the sun (ok maybe not, but they're getting there).

Posted by Altáriël of Dorthonion (Member # 6473) on :

I was actually thinking about the fact that there was no African American princess in the picture a few days ago. Perhaps my thoughts were intercepted?

Anyhoot, to tell everyone the truth, I'm not sure I have much hope in this project, or Disney anymore. Although I admit that Rapunzel looks promising.

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

Have they had a latina princess?

Posted by James Tiberius Kirk (Member # 2832) on :

I'm guessing Disney's lack of African-American princesses is/was partially due to the scarcity of monarchies in the US. [Wink]

No, which bothers me a little.

We need to have an Aztec Disney princess!

Posted by MyrddinFyre (Member # 2576) on :

They did have Emporer's New Groove, which was a whole cast of Mezzoamericanness.

Love that movie.

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

Mezzoamericans from before Columbus, right? Okay, but that's not my heritage.

Also, I loathe that movie. Disney's second worst feature cartoon. Uck.

Y'all are missing the best part!

Its set in New Orleans. Hmm...Disney meets the French Quarter. But why Randy Newman?? Why??

Yay for the guy who wrote Aladdin but he also did the nightmarish Hercules.

Love that movie.

I thought that the Incas were in South America.

Totally not the same region.

I did love that movie, though, which is why I'm not sure I want to see the sequel.

But I love Hercules!

Megara was hot. And this coming from a very straight...ok, maybe not so straight...but straight none the less woman!

They also worked on Treasure Planet, which frankly, sucked.

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

Hercules was fantastic. Witty and underrated.

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

What made Hercules fun was the Hades character.

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

What made Hercules fun were the gags on modern pop culture. (Frequently including Hades.)

Well, yes, that too. [Big Grin]

Naysayers should keep in mind that both Hercules and Treasure Planet came out in the dark postLion King period...when the box office returns made the Disney corporate people notice they made animated films, and suddenly the "money" people began interfering with the creative people.

The creative people also went a bit crazy themselves...there's a film called Dream On, You Crazy Dreamer! that gives an excellent view of the boom and bust of Disney's animation studio.

I love The Emperors New Groove. Kronk is awesome.

I submit this list of the 3 worst Disney features:

Going over the list of Disney feature cartoons though I was surprised at how many I love. I was trying to pick a worst 5 but found that I couldn't easily do so.

The Black Cauldron, however, is an abomination and should have all copies and originals destroyed. I hope for the day that The Prydain Chronicles get a proper film treatment, animated or otherwise.

I guess you're excluding all the direct-to-video sequels, like Peter Pan 2, The Little Mermaid 2, and Cinderella 2 and (heaven help us) 3?

Posted by solo (Member # 3148) on :

Yes, I forgot to mention that. I can't think of a single direct-to-video Disney movie that is better than Brother Bear or Home on the Range. They are probably all better than The Black Cauldron though.

To be fair, if I had seen The Black Cauldron without having read The Prydain Chronicles I might have enjoyed it. I have tried giving it a fair chance but those books are so ingrained in me that I don't think I can be objective about the cartoon.

The D2V movies don't count.

Somehow you left Hunchback off your list?! Bah. Worthless.

Word.

Back to Hercules...I don't remember much about it, but that it had the most charming and effective music. The gospel feel and clever lyrics still make me grin when I think of them. *grin*

I am not looking forward to a movie about a princess with music by Randy Newman. Is it just me? Ugh.

Posted by Shanna (Member # 7900) on :

If you're going to set a movie in New Orleans, atleast get a local to do the soundtrack. There's tons of musicians here, they could find atleast one who would interested.

Posted by Puffy Treat (Member # 7210) on :

Not a Randy Newman fan, no.

I at least hope he won't sing any of the songs. [Angst]

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

Newman lived in New Orleans until he was eleven.

-o-

I think he's an extremely clever writer; I'm hopeful.

Posted by Puffy Treat (Member # 7210) on :

I don't hate the guy, but it truly does seem that every post-1995 song written by Newman sounds a lot like "You've Got a Friend in Me".

Posted by Nighthawk (Member # 4176) on :

...and he keeps getting Oscar nominations, doesn't he? Not that that means anything...

Posted by Puffy Treat (Member # 7210) on :

I should note I've only rarely liked Academy-nominated "Best Songs". [Wink]

Posted by The Pixiest (Member # 1863) on :

They had an asian looking Pocahontas. Would be nice if they would have some native (north) american heroines who looked like native americans... And didn't sing about being in harmony with nature. That's a PC myth.

Posted by Puffy Treat (Member # 7210) on :

Pocahantas was originally going to be a far, far different film.

Then Beauty and the Beast got nominated for best picture. when it lost, Jeff K. (not yet gone for Dreamworks) became obsessed with creating an animated film that would appeal to the Academy. He chose Pocahantas. Suddenly, the title character got redesigned as a scantily clad eco-goddess warrior babe. [Eek!]

Don't forget "built like a barbie doll."

What's the point in making a cartoon if ya can't merchandize the characters?

I really liked Emperor's New Groove. I thought that and Lilo & Stitch were the only truly good movies to come out of Disney since the Winnie the Pooh shorts of the 70's.

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

Wow. I thought Lion King and Mulan were amazing.

ADDED: And I've always detested Winnie the Pooh.

I also detested Winnie Pooh. I loved the character design, but the story lines were rather bland and the characters themselves were just too stupid.

Emperor's New Groove though, as I've already mentioned, was freakin' awesome. Lilo and Stitch was so-so. However, if you think that The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King are not as good as Winnie the Pooh and Lilo and Stich then I must say that I disown you.

You are officially out of my will.

P.S. I loved the Black Cauldron, I don't care what anyone says. I also read the Chronicles of Prydain, mind you. I guess the reason I loved it was because it wasn't one of those "happy-happy let's sing a song and the sadness will go away on it's own" kind of movie.

Oh, and while I've not seen all of Cinderella III, I've seen most of it and strangely, I liked it. It seems like it was actually one of the few good sequels like Down Under. For one thing, they really kept the character of the Stepmother. She's a total B*%#$ in that movie. Especially the part where she's like, "Oh, and...pick up that broken glass."

Hunchback had, by far, the best music out of any of the Disney cartoon films, so I wouldn't exactly call it worthless. Wasn't kiddie music, though. The film failed 'cause they tried to take a rather tragic story, full of adult themes, and turn it into a kid's movie.

Later, the film was turned into an *adult* musical in Germany to critical acclaim. I've never seen the show, but I do have the soundtrack - and it is without a doubt the best musical I have ever heard (helps that I know German, although most of they lyrics say basically the same thing). I wish that Disney would bring it to Broadway, but since it's rather un-Disneyish - Esmeralda dies, and Frollo is pushed to his death by Quasi - I doubt it ever will.

All Dogs Go to Heaven is set in New Orleans. I totally didn't realize that until a few weeks ago.

But All Dogs Go to Heaven isn't Disney - it's from the makers of The Land Before Time.

That isn't the point! The point is, it's set in New Orleans. And it is AWESOME.

Emperor's New Groove: Love it
Hercules: Hate it
Winnie the Pooh: Love it (although, admittedly, I haven't seen it in 20 years)

Any film that features Burt Reynolds *shudder* singing is automatically and innately -not- awesome.

Especially if it also features him singing with a random, flamboyantly gay alligator.

Seriously, Bluth and his entire crew were on something when they cooked up that film.

Hey, don't hate on the alligator. [Razz]

Posted by Puffy Treat (Member # 7210) on :

He was from a completely different movie, story, world, design sense...cobbled into the film at the last moment when Bluth needed another Deus Ex Machina plot twist. Seriously. [Big Grin]

You laughed when Littlefoot's mother died, didn't you?

[Wink]
(as pH said, don't be hating on the alligator!)

Littlefoot's mother dying made me sob uncontrollably. [Frown]

But the alligator was still awful!

I loved the first Land Before Time movie.......every single one after that should burn in hell and writhe in pain, suffering for all an eternity and ever more!!

Really? I think the original Winnie the Pooh shorts are probably the best thing that Disney has ever created. They capture the spirit and the humour of the books perfectly!

I agree that Emperor's New Groove was better than Lilo & Stitch. The Little Mermaid took a great fairy tale and replaced all the beautiful bits from it with kitsch. As movies Beauty and the Beast as well as the Lion King were both somewhere in between okay and good. In fact none of these three films were truly bad, it's just that they have no place amongst the truly great children animations such as Disney's Winnie the Pooh, Peter Pan, Snow White, the old Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck shorts, Miyazaki movies such as My Neighbour Totoro or Spirited Away, or the old Russian version of Snow Queen. (I haven't seen Mulan so I can't comment on how good that is.)

It sucks being left out of your will though. It's okay though, I won't complain. I guess I'll just have to rob a bank. [Frown]
