...and it really hurts. I stubbed it hardcore on a chair. Totally wicked pain. At first, I didn't notice. But I can definitely tell now. Mostly because it's swollen, moves at weird angles, and hurts like heart break.

The worst part is...you can't do anything about it. It's a toe. You just have to suffer. And I'm supposed to go camping this weekend. Man, I hope shoes make it less painful.

Ooch. Ice. Ice. Ice. Icy Hot too. Also, try to reorient it so that it isn't moving at such strange angles. The ice will help prevent swelling, which will heal further damage.

The Icy Hot will numb it some too, so that should make it feel better when walking around.

This is what I have been told and done, and it has worked for me.

When I broke my toe (big one, right foot) I made the mistake of holding it in the air for a couple of days afterwords. Don't do this. It hurts a lot more trying to get it to go normal again.

On the plus side, when my toenail was falling out, it came away at the side first. So I could lift it and make my toe talk. Mature, I know. Just watch for the seems of pants if your toe nail starts coming off. It'll catch, bend all the way back, and make you say things you didn't know you could.

I had just read your post in the Serenity thread about how you didn't buy the disc after years of karate training.

So when I saw this thread...

Anyway, that totally sucks man. Here's for a speedy healing!

Yeah, if the toenail starts coming off use athletic tape to hold it in place and use bacitracin ointment to keep it from infecting.

What! Tape!?!?! I'd go straight for the superglue.

I broke my big left toe a couple years back. I was pushed down my stairs. The doctor said it was the worst break he'd seen. Striaght down the middle, completely in half. I wish I had the x-ray. Took my about 6 weeks or so of crutchified misery before it healed back completely.

What toe is it?

I'm sorry for laughing, Steve. I've never broken a bone, but I've jammed my fingers God knows how many times playing basktball and I've stubbed my toe plenty of times. But I can only imagine the pain you went through when you broke it. Toes hurt something fierce when they're injured.

I broke the entire right big toenail off when I was fifteen. It has never grown normally since. It's got weird lumps, and looks like I took an Emery board to the entire toenail. My daughter insults me about it sometimes. That's what I get for crappy jump-kick technique, neh?

Yet I still wear sandals.

There isn't one, just codeine and crutches.

I broke my toe a while back. One thing that might help is to tape it to the toe next to it. Helps keep it in line, limit jostling.

Sorry to hear about your break.

A couple years ago I broke my right pinkie toe. I was working out and dropped a 25 lb plate on my foot. It smashed the bone to pieces, pulverized it. I had to go to the hospital because it was bleeding. That was the worst pain I had ever experienced. Then it hurt for a while after as well. Sucks.

That depends on the break-- they might tape it.

Sounds horrid.

My worst broken toe incident (there are five) was with the right baby toe smashed to a lot of bits - at least a dozen breaks - with three or four dislocations. My toe just... hung there. I was black and blue to about four inches above my ankle.

In my toe breaks, they're reset when necessary and then wrapped in gauze, then taped to the toe beside for support. It's the best way to keep that toe from being reinjured.

I also ended up using either crutches or canes for mine, but I do spectacular damage.

Also, toes take a long time to heal. You get impatient, you start walking around, you're tired of babying it, you're anxious to get back to normal life... My worst was mostly healed in six months, but still hurt for another two or three or so after that. But then, I have defective collage, extremely loose joints, and heal slowly anyway.

This is the best advice. I broke both my big toes simulatenously during a soccer match senior year of high school. While it's still going to be uncomfortable, it won't hurt too much if it isnt moving. So take it up, use some padding, clean and redress it daily.

In a cpl of weeks, the "dead" toe nail will fall out, and will take the pain away too... my new nails came out just fine... there was a bump like thing at the beginning, but i just let it grow out, and it's been flat from there on.

Ugh, I know how you feel. I broke my toe a couple years ago at my old college homecoming running up the stairs for ending concert. Thought I had just overextended it but over the next two hours became near unbearable to walk on. Spent the next month walking on the side of my foot. [Smile] Never saw a doctor so for all I know I tore a tendon or something.

Have you been to the doctor? Are you sure nothing can be done about it? I broke my toe twice. The first time, all I could do was tape it. The second time I required surgery to repair it properly. Go to the doctor, if you haven't already. It concerns me that you are saying it moves at weird angles - could be dislocated, which is what happened to my toe the second time. If it heals crooked, it could cause you a lifetime of trouble.
Alright, well. I exagerated a tad on that part. It basically moves normally. It just hurts. It's definitely broken. But it moves mostly normally. It's a tad crooked, but I think it'll be fine.

This thread is making me want to walk with a limp just from reading it!

I've never broken a bone in my life, though I've lost several toenails from getting them stepped while playing soccer. Foot injuries are no fun.
