Yeah, but clowning is totally worth it, as soon as you see the smiles on those little faces you just know... they're getting ready to jab you with something.

I've never really understood this sentiment. Is it the idea of clowns in general that is scary? Is it having seen some awful movie in which clowns kill people? Is it some aspect of what the clowns do or wear? I know that I find that the clowns who cover their whole bodies with costume, gloves and makeup make me slightly uncomfortable (and are generally less funny than those who don't), but I usually find clowns to be funny rather than scary.

I used to clown. If a child were scared of us, we'd pretend to be scared of the child. Usually I could get them to laugh instead.

I feel like that's a better argument for being afraid of people dressed up as mascots, but okay.
I guess I don't have a problem with clowns beacuse growing up I never really encountered one that I didn't know as a person when they were out of the costume. I'm just curious about how other people got their impressions of clowns.

I still do clowning.
Its scary, from the clowns point of view.
Its also great.
However, if you are scared of a clown, and the clown tries to talk you out of it, plays with it, or treats you bad about it, that is a bad clown.
bad clown!
The day my wife and I (she is also a clown) traveled three states to go to a clown convention was probably the most clownish thing I've been apart of. There was a clown wedding, a clown parade, and lots of fun.
Then we get back to the hotel and Skinamax is having a special on.....
Clown Sex.
(I guess its kind of like "Make-up sex", but funnier).
Anyway, the only time I was tempted to play on someones clown fears was one hot summer day. I had worked four hours as a clown, missing my lunch, and was starved. On the way home I hit the drive-thru at a McDonalds.
The lady at the drive thru window said, "I can't serve you. I'm scared of clowns." She actually left her station and called in a manager to hand me my food.
She was scared of clowns.
She worked at McDonalds.
Duh!

I see the clown fear thing as the same as children who start weeping when their parents force them onto Santa Clause's lap.
You don't know who that person is no matter how many songs you have sung about him, or how many cards you have seen. And you have been told to be wary of strangers.
Clowns are not even as popular as Santa Clause, so no wonder children can be afraid of one who is in their faces.
Its not limited to clowns either!

You know, parents spend a lot of time and effort teaching kids, "don't talk to strangers." Then we stick them in the laps of the strangest people they've ever seen to take their pictures.
