I finally bought the game (only $20 now!), but I'm having problems, and their tech support is really tough to deal with, so I thought maybe one of you guys might be able to help.

When I start the game, the updater thing comes on and says "Connecting." FOREVER. And the page above it says "Page cannot be displayed." They said it was probably my antivirus program and to uninstall it and try again. I did. Same result. They said it's probably some kind of security thing that is displeased. Have any of you guys who play this had this problem, and if so, how did you fix it?

I haven't played CoV specifically, but when I try to update World of Warcraft, my firewall often gets really upset and tries to block it. If you have a firewall program, you might check their tech support specifically for that (WoW tech support tells you which ports you have to make your firewall allow).

If you're really desperate and feeling lucky, you could temporarily disable your firewall while the program updates. Of course, I wouldn't recommend this, but sometimes you might want to throw caution to the wind and play a game. Just remember to turn it back on when you're done, if you go this rout, and it happens to work.

Of course, it could be something completely different [Dont Know]

I want CoV...
The only thing I hate about online games is that I have to pay for the game and for the service itself.

I thought CoV didn't have a subscription charge. I play Guild Wars which is made by the same company (I get CoV advertisements when I buy a new expansion) and I only pay for the game, no monthly fees.

Guild Wars is one of the few games that charges no monthly fee. Most MMORPG's charge between $10-$15 a month.

Okay, so found the security software that was causing the issue, and the game loads now, but the colors are all messed up...like, black shows up as this weird greeny-pinky color, and my mouse pointer turns into a black box.

[Dont Know]

How good are your video & sound cards? CoV is a HUGE resource hog, and it's got a lot of bad memory leaks related to the sound.

Haven't really run into problems like this. I mean, CoH used to flat *crash* my old computer, but I haven't had any recent troubles.

The only things I can think of that might cause the problems you describe are, maybe, the general color depth setting (16-bit vs. 32-bit) or possibly some other program running in the background. And I'll admit those are flat guesses.

Cryptic's tech support seems to have undergone an overhaul to the worse recently. My sympathies; I hope you can get it running properly.

ADD: Oh, and the usual things tech support always suggests, like making sure your video card drivers are up-to-date. (I sometimes think tech support services have lists of things that they go through, the last few of which won't necessarily help but are likely to make their customers give up in frustration.)

Any luck getting CoV going, pH? Have the tech support people finally earned their keep?

ADD: Poking around the CoV forums, I noticed that there was some documentation of a problem like yours occuring with game-handled antialiasing using an ATi (Radeon) card. Are you using an ATI card?
