Yes, the popstar singing sensation, fresh off her success of playing a CGI opossum, is set to conquer the world of manga with Avril Lavigne's Make Five Wishes, coming out this spring!

A naive, insecure teen-aged girl discovers a website run by a demon! The demon offers her five wishes, which she rashly takes.

Then, in a series of circumstances no one could have predicted, it turns out you -can't- trust demonic gift wishes.

Her life crumbling around her, the girl has but one hope...Avril Lavigne, super-heroic magical girl demon-queller! Who rides a mecha. With missile breasts. And a pikachu.

The girl, naturally, will be right as rain.

I think we can all feel safer now that we know Ms. Lavigne stands between us and the Forces of Evil.

*And no, I'm not kidding.*

You know, all you had to say was 'missile breasts'.

*sigh* Del Rey's decided to enter the growing market of English-language Manga, and this is how they do it. Its like they haven't paid any attention to the successful series launched by other companies, such as Tokyopop's Dramacon or Sorcerers & Secretaries.

HA! Exactly what I was thinking.

Puffy are you sure you got all the facts straight, the pikachu thing made me doubtful.

Missle breasts?

Oddly perplexing.

Its not quite that bad, btw. Here're the two most pertinent paragraphs from the press release:

quote:
Del Rey Manga will publish the first volume of MAKE 5 WISHES on April 10, 2007. Avril Lavigne's new album The Best Damn Thing will release shortly after on April 17, 2007 from RCA Records. In volume one of MAKE 5 WISHES, introverted teenager Hana stumbles upon a website that will change her life forever. After a demon grants her a series of wishes that go bad, Hana meets her hero Avril Lavigne, who helps her find the courage to conquer her own personal demons once and for all. The concluding volume of MAKE 5 WISHES will release in July 2007. Both volumes will appear in full-color.

More than simply lending her talents to the creative process, multiple award-winning singer, songwriter, model, and actress Avril Lavigne also appears as a character in the manga. When asked what inspired her to be a part of this project, Avril Lavigne had this to say, "I know that many of my fans read manga, and I'm really excited to be involved in creating stories that I know they will enjoy."

Its extremely exploratory, but I think they've noticed a common feature of successful English-language manga -- strong female characters -- and run in the wrong direction with it.

DramaCon is one if the better OEL mangas. Everyone who likes good manga should check it out.

Yep, I already own the first two volumes, and will buy the third when it comes out (soon, I think).

You can read the first couple of chapters free, here, and more with a Tokyopop VIP membership (which hasn't started yet, but should soon): http://www.tokyopop.com/P-12/

Huh, looking at the author's site, she's participating in an art book called Mangaka America. I might buy that.
