This is topic Jeff Smith (of the 'Bone' Graphic Novel series fame) has been posting "Shazam" art! in forum Books, Films, Food and Culture at Hatrack River Forum.
The way the mainstream DC Universe has treated the Marvel Family/Shazam! characters is quite frankly reprehensible.
For every good modern treatment (Jerry Ordway's Power of Shazam GN) there's been an unending stream of dreary, gruesome mangling of the characters. Ordway's attempt to do a monthly series was spoiled by the need to make it "More like the rest of the DC universe"...complete with gratuitous Batman guest shots. The current Trials of Shazam mini is barely recognizable.
But...Jeff Smith seems to get it.
Captain Marvel is a fairy tale of wonder, fun, and hope.
Not another teeth-clenching, angst-and blood super-blah.

Cool. I like the way he made Mary Marvel into a bratty little sister rather than a pre-war paragon of pre-teen prissy pulchritude.

"prepubescent" would work just a little bit better there.
