This is topic What I want for the holidays: Gifts should be being picked out right now. in forum Books, Films, Food and Culture at Hatrack River Forum.
Here's the thread to post what you want for the holidays gift exchange.
I'd really like to get everyone to post in here by the 17th, so it seems very likely I won't email you who you will send to until you have posted in this thread.
Favorite colors and Collections are great, so are allergies, lists of interests, and answers to my questions below.
Do you like receiving homemade gifts?
What do you think of the ever popular "I'd like something from your town" idea?
If you've done the exchange before did you love the experience.
Thanks everyone.

Homemade gifts are awesome.
I love neutrals - tans, greens, etc. Things made out of wood or wrought iron seem to always appeal to me.
Something from a specific town is cool, as long as it's not like a shot glass or something. If I might actually use/consume it, GREAT!
No allergies. I like music, writing, scrapbooking and other crafty stuff and I have two small children.
First time Hatrack gifter.
Looking forward to participating in the exchange.

Breyerchic04:
colors: purple, pinks, usually with greens and blues.
collections: well I really love yarn, it's seriously what I spend much of my money on. But I'm also really into horses. Last I've recently started collecting books for a future classroom, mostly elementary level stuff, and I have an amazon wishlist which I'll edit into this post later. Chocolate, I forgot chocolate. Mostly dark chocolate, with nuts or sweet things in it but no fruits.
Allergies: I am sensitive to scented things like body spray or lotion.
Homemade gifts and local things are what this gift exchange is about, though so are things that a person wouldn't think to buy for themselves.
I do love what I've gotten and look forward to it again. I think I explained what I got in the other thread, so you'll just have to look there.

Hmmm. I like midnight blue a lot. I do like homemade gifts. I absolutely love books. If I have a collection of anything, it'd be books. Oh oh, and I love history. I'm a History major in college.
Sooo ... a midnight blue homemade history book, plus some frozen foods, would be perfect!

Is World Peace such a crazy thing to ask for? ; )
I don't mind receiving homemade gifts, especially if someone's really put some effort into it. It's a cool way to get to know the gift-giver a little better.
My favourite color's yellow.
I collect things 'Peter Pan' - big fan of the story.
I wouldn't mind something from someone's town, as long as it came along with a story about how it's relevant to the town...
I haven't done this before but I'm thinking it's going to be pretty cool.
I don't have any allergies.
And my interests are pretty widely varied - from reading to writing (mostly poetry) to just about all things outdoors to traveling to... I'm pretty open to most things.
And I'm excited about this exchange! : )

My favorite color...my house is decorated in bright colors. Blues, reds, greens.
Homemade gifts are great.
Allergies...long dog/cat hair. So if you have a long-haired pet, don't let it near the gift, or I might get sniffly.
Anything from a specific town is fine. Except unlike Daisy, shot glasses are fine, too. I really like pirates. And stuffed animals. And books. And movies and tv. And coconut. And pineapple. I have a tortoise, and soon I'll be getting my puppy.

I love homemade gifts. They make you feel special. ^_^
Colors... red, green, blue and silver.
I love baking, anime, reading (though rarely these days), among other things.
Don't think this will actually apply but I'm allergic to shrimp.
The 'something from your town' is neat but as for me, I don't even know what I'd pick from my own town... >.<
First time participating in the gift exchange.

Pearce, I'm going to see if I can find a shot glass with "Tallahassee" on it. If I do, I'm so sending it to you for Christmas.

Good heavens, is it time to post here already? Guess so...
Colors: I'm not the biggest fan of pink, and much of my wardrobe is blue, green, red or brown. I do like dark greens, though.
Interests: Lots. I don't really collect things anymore, except books I don't need. I am a Classics MA student, so anything in Greek would be pretty cool, though dangerous, owing to the ever-growing size of my collection (though if anyone's got an Oxford of the Homeric Hymns, I would be severely in debt to him/her).
Allergies: None that I know of. I suppose the burden's on you, O Mysterious Gift Sender, to figure out my first one ever.
Homemade gifts are wonderful, of course; local-flavour gifts equally so.
Having done this exchange before, I can honestly say I love participating. It's always a huge challenge to find something appropriate for my giftee, and I look forward to this year's challenge.

I'm an 18 year old undergraduate studying architecture.
Colours: Really anything tasteful is fine. Architects have this thing about wearing black all the time, and as a student I'm picking up the habit. But Apple is converting me to the light side.
Collections: very small scale models of ships/WWII tanks/soldiers/space shuttles/starships/planes/helicopters. Boys will be boys. I should have outgrown these already, but I haven't yet.
Home-made gifts are fine, but region specific ones are even cooler. I can't use a shot glass, because I don't drink. No allergies etc., but food might not get through customs these days.
Interests: architecture, history (esp. classical, WWII or American), books and film, computers, travelling, a budding interest in US politics. I stay out of the political threads as much as possible, because I don't consider myself well enough informed. But I'm trying to rectify that.
This is my first time doing the gift exchange.
Ditto for me:
quote:Originally posted by imogen:
Also, Australian customs will get upset at you if you try to send any home-made food, fruit, seeds, soil, nuts, illegal drugs or smuggled wildlife.
Postage expense wise, it may be better to go smaller and lighter. International air post for bulky packages can be exorbitant. International air post for small things is not. (My last package of yarn from the States was US $1.95 postage. Just sayin’.)
Edit to repair sentence.

Favorite color(s): My favorite is green. My best color to wear is navy blue, although I look pretty good in all soft pastels and cool colors. I strongly dislike pink (although I'm giving in on dressing my girls in it, I don't wear it myself.)
Collections: I collect little boxes and box-like containers, wooden and ceramic and the like, but my husband would really prefer it if you don't get me any more.
Allergies/sensitivities/dislikes: I'm allergic to many flowers and perfumes, so nothing with a scent, please. Even natural ones often bother me. I'm also allergic to rubbing alcohol and have extremely sensitive skin, so please no lotions, soaps, body sprays, etc. I'm allergic to rabbits, so no angora if you knit. My skin is often irritated by wool, so in fact, if you knit, please cotton, synthetic, or cotton/synthetic blends only. I'm also allergic to hazelnuts, artificial dairy topping, grass, some trees, dogs, goats, and one specific kind of blue food coloring, but those are probably less relevant. Oh, and I'm sensitive to beeswax and honey, so none of those, please. I don't like nuts as a general rule, especially peanuts, although I can take them in small quantities. I don't really do seafood, although I don't know that that will matter to anyone, and I don't like barbecue flavors, smoked anything, or ketchup other than Heinz. I'm LDS, no coffee, tea, alcohol, tobacco, etc. Sorry, I'm no fun to shop for, I know.
Interests: Well, I'm a mom who doesn't get to do things for herself often; I love to cook; I love to read, some of my favorites being Sherlock Holmes, historical mysteries, and, of course, spec. fic.; I like cats (have two orange tabbies), and I am working on learning the mandolin and love to sing. I love old-timey, bluegrass, and world music (except Tuvan throat-singing, which gives me migraines.) Oh, and I like hats and look great in them. Not to brag, I just totally do, especially hats with brims.
Do you like receiving homemade gifts? You bet! Although I have limited time to do them myself, so I don't hold it against people if they don't do homemade.
What do you think of the ever popular "I'd like something from your town" idea? It's pretty fun, although I'm cool either way. Last time I got a book with pics of Colorado and that is so gorgeous that I'm planning a vacation there at some point.
If you've done the exchange before did you love the experience? I did indeed love the experience. This will be my third year and I have loved it each time (the giving, I think, even more than the receiving!)

Collections: None that I can think of.
Allergies/sensitivities/dislikes: I don't like cherries. Or sweet potatoes. I'm LDS so no alcohol, tobacco, or (duh) illegal drugs. I don't like cola or herbal tea, either, although I'm a big fan of hot chocolate. I don't like chocolate and mint together.
Interests: Sports! Also animals, food, reading, Star Wars.
Do you like receiving homemade gifts? Sure.
What do you think of the ever popular "I'd like something from your town" idea? I guess that's okay with me.
If you've done the exchange before did you love the experience? I haven't done it before, but it seemed like Anne and Emma had fun.

Favorite color(s): Pink, red, orange, blue.
Collections: My mommy says I collect Superman stuff. I just know I really like it.
Allergies/sensitivities/dislikes: I don't like things that make loud noises. I am sometimes scared of stuffed animals, they're probably not a good idea, although baby dolls and plastic toys are fine. I have a baby sister who will put anything in her mouth and I am under three myself, though, so please no small parts or easily breakable items. I'm allergic to zinc and have sensitive skin, and my mommy would prefer you not give me anything that I put on my skin (lotion, chapstick, soap) or eat without checking if it's okay (although I wouldn't object to cookies or candies myself. You can e-mail her and ask if something is okay if you have something specific to eat in mind.)
Interests: I like Superman, Sesame Street (especially Bert and Ernie), Jesus, and sports, especially baseball and soccer. I like music, anything I can dance to (my mommy says nothing with bad words, please) and I love Raffi. I like things that are red and blue because they remind me of Superman. I like to read books and look at pictures. I like to wear hats and jackets with hoods. I wear a size 3 or 4T. I love to eat, especially candy (my mommy still wants you to ask her before you send me something to eat.) I like toys a lot, especially ones that play songs or flash lights or go. I like to pretend and copy things that big people are doing. I like animals and babies. I like to draw and color.
Do you like receiving homemade gifts? Yeah!
What do you think of the ever popular "I'd like something from your town" idea? I won't give my mommy a straight answer on this one. I think I'm too young to know. My mommy says that I would probably love anything that has pictures to look at, especially something like a photo album with pictures of buildings, plants, animals, and people for me to look at.
If you've done the exchange before did you love the experience? I had fun choosing a treat and toy and drawing a picture. I drove my parents nuts going to four different stores and looking through everything to choose the gifts, though.

Colors: black, white, browns, grays, dark blues and red. I appreciate a dark olive green too.
Collections: 'fraid not.
Allergies/dislikes: No allergies. I'm not a huge sports fan though. Fruitcakes will not be tolerated; after all, they're a national security risk.
Interests: I read a lot, but haven't had anything new for a while, and I really enjoy trivia. Comics are awesome too. I love video games, especially RPGs (I won't hold my breath for a new game ). Occasionally, I try to be an artist, so supplies and/or anything you find visually appealing and would like to share is cool. New music is also fun; I go for hip-hop, almost any not-metal rock, ska, and some reggae.
Homemade gifts? Groovy.
The ever-popular "I'd like something from your town" idea: Fun, but not necessary.
I've never participated in the gift-exchange before, but I was visited by myself from the future saying I'd love it. I'm not quite sure why it was important enough to come back and tell me about, so if the universe implodes, my bad.

Favorite colour(s): Ferrari red, Bugatti blue or Lotus yellow if you catch my drift.
Collections: None
Allergies/sensitivities/dislikes: I'm not overly fond of spiders.
Interests: I like the great outdoors, industrial history and sci-fi
Do you like receiving homemade gifts? Fine with me. Although I'm not that crafty myself.
What do you think of the ever popular "I'd like something from your town" idea? I think this is a great idea. In fact it's a preference.
If you've done the exchange before did you love the experience? This a first for me, but I think it's a great fun community concept.
EDIT: Here's some bio, just in case you're struggling: Geek dad, married with one little lad of eighteen months. I live in the Basque Country (Northern Spain) so small and light will probably be the watchwords for any gift to avoid vast carriage fees. Eatables are probably out too, in order to pass customs. For the same reason explosives and firearms probably aren't a good idea either... Whatever you send it's the thought that counts and I assure you I'll love anything! Thanks in advance.

Homemade gifts are fine.
likes/dislikes: No alcohol, tobacco, or coffee.
Collections: music, movies, books.
I'd like something unique to the sender's locale.
Musical tastes: jazz, blues, country, folk, rock, pretty much anything but rap.
Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :
Edited to add biographial stuff. I'm a 34 year old male (well, by the time you send me something I'll be 35, actually, but still male), living in Dayton, OH. I'm a Domino administrator by trade (no that has nothing to do with pizza).
Favorite colors Depends on what it's for. Deep reds look good in most of my house, but I'm much more likely to go with blues, greens, browns and black for clothing.
Collections Just books, like everyone else here.
Allergies. I'm deathly allergic to horses. If you buy me a pony I shall be most put out.
Interests Pretty much everything except sports. I'd probably enjoy dying of asphyxiation while riding my new pony more than I would getting something sports related.
Do you like receiving homemade gifts? Sure! As long as it isn't a crocheted football cozy or something, homemade is great. If you're an artist and feel like giving a piece of your work I would absolutely *love* that. Homemade food is great too.
If you've done the exchange before did you love the experience? It was fun! I enjoyed it and didn't have any hesitation about doing it again this year.
General likes I love really good chocolate, dark more than milk. I enjoy being exposed to new music of pretty much any genre; a CD from an interesting band local to your area would be welcome, as would a mix CD of some of your favorite stuff. Something emblematic of the area you're from would be great. I love books, and have recently been getting into graphic novels.

Homemade is great.
Unique local things are great.
Consumables - (food, candy, drink, candles, incense, etc) are great.
I like greens (earthy ones best). I like odd desk toys, books, music, movies, puzzles, dragons (I collect them, but shy away from cutsey and too brightly colored), dragon flies, things that fly, and games.
All in all I'm pretty easy to please.
Oh, and no allergies as far as I know.
I did the exchange last year and got a cool electronic dart board and a CD of Jewish inspirational music. (Thanks again SoS )

I'm not allergic to anything, and I don't have any color preferences either.
I really like is finding new music (mostly acoustic lately, but I also love old R&B, jazz, blues, Motown era guys -- especially obscure stuff), so a CD from a good local band would be awesome. I've been wanting to read more of the classic philosophers, so if this is an area you're familiar with that would be helpful. Homemade is great (especially food or art). I've also been reading graphic novels lately, so that may be a possibility.
Then there's always the old standby -- a sock full of coal. It's the gift that keeps on giving.

Favorite colors I love cobalt blue and deep orange with moss green as the nuetral. That's the color scheme of just about everything I get to pick the color of nowadays. But I like just about everything.
Collections Books and movies and CDs. That's all. I don't really collect anything else - I move around a lot so except for books I don't like to really have things.
Allergies Just cats, as far as I know.
Interests Pretty much everything. I like people, so I'm interested in anything people are passionate about. I am currently passionate about books, old movies, Liza Minelli, Edward Norton, Roman history, pretty earrings, oil painting, fugues (the musical kind), and celery-flavored soda.
Do you like receiving homemade gifts? Yes, I love that.

allergies, lists of interests
I'd prefer not to get anything edible (or potable). I'm allergic to cats and wool (and mold, but that doesn't seem like it will be a problem). I love cross stitch and knitting. I've been cross stitching for years, but I'm a beginning knitter. I like flowers and gardening, books, baskets, Tehillim (psalms), kitchen gadgets, and I plan to learn machine sewing this year.

Honestly, I tend to do nothing special for myself because I tend to feel guilty about it. Like I should spend any extra on my little girl or the Hubby so anything done for me special is going to be a treat.

Favorite Colors: Green, Blue, Orange
Allergies: None. No coffee or tea or alcohol, please.
Interests:
Anything geeky, media related, software related, or gaming related.
Do you like homemade gifts:
Yes.
Exchange before?
3 years ago. was cool. I got a monkey and a shark head from Ophelia, which I still have.
I am a huge geek, so really, anything geeky would be cool. However, something that represents you yourself, I would enjoy the most- I enjoy being reminded of friends and events.

I had such a great time with this exchange last year, especially when I got Breyer's gifts. The highlight being a hand-dyed silk scarf. I love it so much.
Here's a few things my gifter might want to keep in mind:
Allergies: Pretty much any lotions or perfumes. Best to stay away from those.
Likes: Sci fi. Books. Movies (not a big fan of comedy). Local stuff!
Dislikes: I do not really care for white or dark chocolate and nuts don't go over well either.
A little bit about myself: I have two chihuahuas, work in the medical field, read a lot, and enjoy cooking (although I do not eat red meat or most seafood). I love eating out and do drink alcohol (usually sweet stuff). I wish I had a green thumb but am notorious for killing plants. I like to play tennis. I am in a long-term relationship (met my hunny on Hatrack) and do not have children.
Hope this help. I know how difficult it can be to buy a gift for someone you have never met.

Favorite colors: green (in general), black (to wear) and longhorn orange. I like most colors though. My house is mostly dark red, mustard, and brown.
Collections: My kitchen is decorated in chickens. I especially like vintage chicken stuff. I have lots of silly socks (but not toe socks). I also have a collection of dust bunnies but I would prefer to not have any more of those.
Allergies: Poison oak so please don't rub my present in that. I don't have any dietary allergies but I am a picky eater. I especially don't like mushrooms or peppers of any kind.
List of likes/ dislikes: I love reading, especially mysteries or young adult novels and especially while in a bubble bath. My favorite scent is sandalwood. My favorite flavor is chocolate mint and I love coffee, chocolate, and dried fruit (not all together). I love to cook and I love cooking/baking gadgets. I am teaching myself to sew but I can't think of anything someone could get me for that so be creative there. I love PC games (like The Sims and Morrowind) and watching movies (any genre but especially live-action classic kids movies and anything with girls who kick butt). I listen to contemporary Christian music but I don't own any CDs no nothing would be a duplicate. I also love playing board games of all kinds and school supplies, especially colored pens, highlighters, and sticky notes. I like necklaces but not earrings or bracelets. I am not into sports of any kind.
Homemade gifts: I would love some homemade gifts especially after reading about all the crafters here.
"I'd like something from your town": I think this is great idea as long as it is not a cheesy souvenir key chain bottle opener or something.
I have never done the exchange before but I am looking forward to it this year!

Yes, I do like homemade gifts! Something from your town is AWESOME.
Likes: Animals, animals, animals. Especially dogs, horses, and camelids, but any animal will do!
Allergies: None, other than amoxicillin!

Favorite colors: I like all colors, but I'm especially drawn to pinks, purples, blues (but not navy blue so much), and greens. Lately I've found myself buying brown clothes a lot, too.
Collections: I don't exactly collect these, but I am inordinately drawn to writing-related things - e.g. good pens (especially in fun colors), blank books for journaling/sketching (though I rarely journal and never sketch), stationery (though I don't really send letters), etc. I don't know why I like these things so much when I don't really use them, other than the pens, but there it is.
Allergies: None, but I really dislike mushrooms and raw tomatoes. EDIT: I just remembered that I also dislike licorice.
Interests: Artsy-craftsy things - I crochet and cross-stitch, but mainly I've been on a knitting kick for the past year or so. I also like travel-stuff, horses (if breyer doesn't like Noemon's pony, I'll take it!), performing arts-related stuff (music, theatre, and dance), history, and, of course, books.
Homemade gifts? Awesome, but I'm cool with non-homemade things too.
Local gifts? Again, awesome, but not necessary.
This is my first time participating in this, but I'm sure I'll love it.
EDIT: Please don't by any means feel that you have to give me something I mentioned here - I also like surprises!

Why would I get you a mango? A papaya maybe (oh, yeah, everyone, I DON'T LIKE PAPAYA.)
But I'm hurt. I actually had something nice that you would like in mind. *sniffs*

Favorite color(s): My favourite colour is green, preferably shades of forest. I like most earth tones, but look ridiculous in anything orange. I like reds and blues as well, deep or vibrant colours. Less a fan of the greys and grey-toned colours.
Collections: I collect books in or about Latin as well as books about the Middle Ages. And fantasy in general. I suggest some sneaking, though, if you get heart-set on that, because I already have quite a few. I also collect scented oils and candles. And earrings.
Allergies/sensitivities/dislikes: I'm actually pretty flexible. I'm not allergic to anything I know of, and generally not sensitive either. I'm not a fan of mushrooms or fish, though I doubt that's an issue.
Interests: Cooking, especially regional or ethnic foods. Knitting and crochet. Reading. Tea. Gregorian chant. Folk/Celtic music. Things with vine patterns are a fairly sure hit. I really hate anything horror-related, movies, books, whatever.
Do you like receiving homemade gifts? I don't see any reason why I shouldn't.
What do you think of the ever popular "I'd like something from your town" idea? It sounds fun to me.
If you've done the exchange before did you love the experience? I haven't done it before, so be merciful to me if I get confused.

Favorite colors The only colors that I don't particularly like are the brighter greens and oranges. Black goes with just about everything. But as long as you don't go with the brighter greens and oranges, you're cool.
Collections Don't get me Pez dispensers! I collect them and have hundreds and hundreds. So chances are I've already got the one you've picked out for me. I do collect Matrushkas (Russian wooden nesting dolls), too. But don't knock yourself out over that!
Homemade gifts Definitely cool! But no food, homemade or otherwise. I am a kosher-observant Jew, so there is a good chance that I wouldn't be able to have any food you send. And besides, I'm working on a weight-reduction project, so even if they were totally kosher, the cookies and candies wouldn't benefit me.
Something from your town Sure -- if you are from an exotic locale where the local craftsfolk are famous for their cunning work. But I don't particularly love "Welcome to Springfield" souvenir spoons.
Likes, Dislikes, Allergies I particularly don't like inspirational plaques, Christian-themed gifts, and hip-hop rap music. Please, no live animals (pets or livestock). They tend not to ship well.
I do like oily bath treats, especially natural-smelling ones, cold weather attire (scarves, gloves, shawls, afghans), and artistic and creative things. If you play in a band, I'd love a CD of your stuff! If you are handy with the knitting needles, a sample of your work would also be great. If there is something that you have a passion for, something that you think is worth sharing, introduce me to it -- it will serve to help me to know you better and might just introduce me to something that I never knew I loved.
No gift-related allergies to worry about (I mean, you weren't planning to give me Sulfa antibiotics or anchovies, now, were you?)
Last year my son and I did this and the whole thing was a lot of fun. We played hide-the-lizard with a rubber lizard that the Ketchup Princess gave to Son of Shvester, for months! Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :
And she picked it out all herself.
Oh, I meant to mention that-- I mentioned it to breyerchic, but we do let Emma pick out/create her own gifts. So if you would rather not get something chosen by a toddler, please e-mail breyerchic to let her know that you don't want Ketchup Princess for your secret gifter.

This will be my 4th Hatrack gift exchange. I was in the original pool, which doesn't seem like that long ago. I'll tell you what I've received in the past and also tell you that I adored each one of these things:
A DVD of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" from Speed
A CD of Yo-yo Ma and Bobby McFerrin from Rav
A book about "Sense and SEnsibility" the movie with the script and Emma Thompson's diary along with bath bubbles and salts from katharina
All fantastic. I'm wildly easy to please and love homemade, homegrown, hometown, whatever. I love food, have no allergies and here is my amazon wish list, just to give you an idea of my interests and obsessions.
I am a self-proclaimed and shameless fangirl. Most of my fandoms are evident in my Livejournal userpics. Just to give you a brief idea... But, the gift need have absolutely nothing to do with anything I've mentioned. I'm sure I'll love it.

I like all colours and don't really collect anything (ok, that's a lie - I collect yarn ).
I’m allergic to guinea pigs. Don’t send me a guinea pig.
Do you like receiving homemade gifts? Love it.
What do you think of the ever popular "I'd like something from your town" idea? Love it again. Two years ago Kat sent me great stuff from Texas which I still have and use (I haven’t yet worn the badge. But it is waiting for a special occasion… oh yes, it is waiting!).
If you've done the exchange before did you love the experience? I’ve done it for two years and it was great both times.
Edit: I'll add some more interests, to make a bit more helpful.
I'm 24 and married, but no kids yet. I'm a lawyer, but am quitting work in 3 weeks to (hopefully) start a PhD in international law. I'm a pretty good cook, and love cooking - I have a guilty love for 'traditional' American cooking (an example: my last cookbook purchase was the Little House cookbook) but I cook other stuff too. I love to read anything and everything. I knit. I don't spin yet but I want to learn.
But mostly, I'd like a surprise.

Favorite colors: Pink&Blue, just blue, lilac
Interests: I like things that I find very useful and things that make me laugh. I like pretty much anything that is bright and shiny and can make a simple creature like me happy.
Do you like receiving homemade gifts? I love those because it shows that people care enough to do something with their bare hands instead of just swiping their cards. Although swiping is not bad either. =3
What do you think of the ever popular "I'd like something from your town" idea? It's ok, but I'd rather have something that makes me jump for joy. I can get you some souveneirs from San Diego, though!
EDIT: I have no allergies that I know of and I ADORE candy. On my free time I am a deadly computer virus, the Dastardly Spictacular and a celebrity pharmicist.

What do you think of the ever popular "I'd like something from your town" idea? Such a cool idea -- I really liked the idea for a homemade book of pictures of places and people where you live.
If you've done the exchange before did you love the experience?
My son and I take turns with the nifty booties my wonderful gift-giver made me last year to go with a fun book and a real-live handwritten letter. Toasty toes, fun books, and real letters are awesome things!
Some notes as regards my son (Tate) below: We stay at a "g" or "pg" rating for books, movies, and games. Also, I do limit the intake of sugary sweets, so candy is not a good idea. If you have a fun math skills game idea . . . oops, better not go there . . . he'd never forgive me.

Allergies/Sensitivities: Only to things like bruises and broken arms. (Mom says I am allergic to dust mites. Have you ever seen a magnified picture of them? They're cool!)
Favorite Activities: Baseball. Skateboarding. Reading. Swimming. Lego-building. Just being outside. A lot.

Favorite colors - Black to wear, dark blue for my home.
Collections - Jewelry boxes, music, books
Allergies - No allergies, though strong smelling things will bother my husband
Interests - Reading, writing, drawing, computer arting, screwing around on message boards, PC gaming, movies, music. I have a husband and a nine year old daughter. My husband and I like to game, cook, talk and watch movies together and will occasionally get into a home improvement project together. My daughter and I enjoy taking walks, shopping, and reading together.
I love homemade gifts and totally dig the 'something from your hometown' idea.
I'm new to the exchange.

Ack, a deadline! OK, here's my post:
Favorite colors -- all the colors are good
Collections -- don't get me any comics, it'd have to be pretty obscure for me not to've seen it already... I do farming for a living, so anything plant-related probably isn't a good idea unless you've got a good background in gardening/farming...
Interests -- music: folk, rock, roots/blues (BUT: no hiphop, rap, punk, opera, new age, jazz, country). I'm pretty musically naive, chances are extremely good that I've never heard any of your favorite music from the last 20 years... other interests: French, non-RPG games, dark chocolate, astronomy, cool-looking art shirts.
Allergies -- lilac bushes; that's it.
Do you like receiving homemade gifts? -- Yep! I'm always impressed by them.
What do you think of the ever popular "I'd like something from your town" idea? -- If it's food, probably, if it's a virus, probably not.
If you've done the exchange before did you love the experience -- Yeah! I love the randomness and getting-to-know-the-gifter-and-giftee aspects of this... this is the 4th time I'm doing this, it's all been good, Leonide and Strider gave me a Tolkien audiobook, xnera gave me a Monty Python calendar (which turned out to be both fun AND an excellent art reference), kojabu gave me chocolate artbars... I'm very easy to please, throw random cool stuff at me and you can't go wrong!
Oh yeah: I need a new fedora, since someone stole mine...
[edit to add: the address for me that breyerchic has is actually for my brother's family in NJ, where I'll be for Xmas... so whoever my gifter is: don't worry when you mail the present if I don't post a "got it!" note right away.]

Collections: Pigs (yeah, I'm a straaaange little Jewish girl), anything music (especially broadway, but also classical and opera are big hits) related.
I love homemade gifts, I love things unique to "hometowns," etc. I'm really very flexible! I'm not allergic to anything that I know of.
P.S. In case anyone was unsure, I'm female, and a 20-year-old college student.

Favorite colors any shade of green except puke, lime, flourescent, and neon. light blues and pinks
Collections i collect figurines of animals, although in my current living situation i haven't been able to display them -- i have about fifty or so. If you see a cool animal figurine (smaller ones) that you think are really cool, pass them along! They don't have to be realistic, either. i also love all things Disney.
Homemade gifts uh, duh. that would be awesome.
Something from your town yeah, sure. but i'd prefer something more personal, unless you really love your town in which case it is personal!
Likes, Dislikes, Allergies i don't really like sweets or candies or chocolate. i'll eat them, but i'm not a fiend and most likely i'd eat a few and throw the rest away and i would feel SO BAD. No allergies that i know of. I really like foresty/faerie things, and things with suns/moons/stars on them, that are darker blues and yellows. That's sort of my mixed theme of bedroom decoration right now. Anyhow, that's just to give a wider variety of things to look at, NOT a request. I have loved every gift i've gotten from the exchange, and none of them were any of these things The first year Dan_Raven sent Strider and I a story he wrote along with ingredients to make chili (yum), the next year Derrell sent gift cards to PetCo or Petsmart (very handy!) and the next we got dan again and Sasha sent us some stuff and we got another great Dan_Raven original story! So there.

Interests Anything Joss Whedon has had anything to do with in any medium, similar for Neil Gaiman and Charles de Lint, rock music, chocolate, knitting, spinning, sparkly stuff like beads and glass.
Do you like receiving homemade gifts? Yes, very much. Locally-produced stuff from the giver's area is always good too.

Favourite colours: Anything, really. I am a fan of orange and yellow. I also like green and brown a lot.
Homemade and hometown gifts: Awesome. I love travelling and learning about other places.
Collections: The only things I seem to collect are dust and dirty dishes, but I have quite enough of both right now, so please don't send me any more.
Interests/About Me: I am a 24 year old Canadian, just finished university studies in Arctic archaeology, and currently living in BC. I am also a dancer, an actor, and a musician. I love listening to music I don't know yet. I mostly listen to folk, rock, old popular music (eg. Bing Crosby) and musicals, but I really like pretty much anything except club-type dance music. I love to read, especially children's fantasy books. I love all movies except horror movies. I love Irish and Celtic everything, as well as Inuit and other aboriginal folklore and cultures. I also love dark chocolate. Really, I tend to love most things, so I'm sure whatever I receive will be neat. Don't feel like you need to use something from this list.
I have not done the Hatrack exchange before.
Restrictions/Allergies: I am a vegan, so my only restriction is no animal products, please. This includes things like milk products or other dairy, eggs, gelatin, leather, wool, beeswax candles, most soaps, etc.
My only allergy is penicillin, but I quite dislike walnuts, pineapples and mushrooms, so you can pretend I'm allergic to all those as well if you like.

Martin) but I keep my options open to many types of fiction. I like candy and chocolate (especially white but not dark). I like to play tennis and hockey (my favorite team are the Pittsburgh Penguins). My girlfriend, Niki and I like to go out to eat a lot, go to movies and enjoy dancing. Favorite colors I'm a fan of jewel tones and bright (not to be confused with neon) colors. Blue, pink, yellow, green, red, purple, black, and silver are all beautiful.
Collections I collect snowflake ornaments, books and fabric. I'm a fabric snob, so it's probably better not to go in that direction
Allergies Most scents, penicillin and poison ivy (probably not applicable here, but just in case). No coffee, tea or alcohol.
Interests I am a Whedonite! I've been wanting to check out one of his comics, but haven't yet. My Amazon wish list will give you a good idea of my interests. I adore quilting and I like the concept of cooking, but I don't have much time for it anymore. I'm a huge fan of chocolate. I like things that will be used, more than things that are just pretty to look at.
Homemade gifts? Fabulous!
"I'd like something from your town"? Since that would be a college t-shirt from my town, I prefer something more personal unless you're from a very unique place.
Previous Participation I've participated for the past two years. I've loved both my gifts and I use them on a regular basis. Neither of them were on my list, but they were both perfect! I've received a set of pink metal measuring spoons and a quilting book.

Do you like receiving homemade gifts?
Absolutely!
What do you think of the ever popular "I'd like something from your town" idea?

Stuff I like: I just reacently got into comic books, and comic art. I love big fluffy scarves in the winter. I'm just beginning to cook Asian food, and am in love with everything asian. Firefly. I read mostly fantasy, but I like some sci-fi and historical fiction, if it's good.

Something from my town: Nothing exiting...actually, I can't think of anything at all...

I have a new fabric addiction. Cool fabric would also be appreciated. I had to leave the fabric store tonight before I blew all our bill money.

Hi everyone, KarlEd told me that he signed me up for this, so i am posting what kind of things I like. My favorite color is red, and I too like dragons and most anything fantasy. I would like something from someones home town, for it is a neat thing to get something from a different place that u wouldn't be able to get from your own town. I am picky about foods, so that should be left out as an option. Home made things r fun as well, so I would enjoy that.
Well, that about sums it up. KarlEd told me about last years exchange and it sounded really neat. Can't wait to see who I get to send a gift to. See ya for now!

Oh, yes, I completely agree. Fabric and craft stores are dangerous places.

Edit to provide brief biographical description as some have above: I'm a 21-year-old journalist living in Washington, D.C.
Favorite colors and Collections are great, so are allergies, lists of interests
Do you like receiving homemade gifts? - Sure, why not.
What do you think of the ever popular "I'd like something from your town" idea? - As above, okay but not necessary.
If you've done the exchange before did you love the experience. - I have done it before and I enjoyed it.
That said, best bet for me is probably a book...I love Hatrack's recommendations for stuff I haven't read/seen before. On SciFi/Fantasy I've covered GRRM, OSC, Jordan, and Terry Pratchett...I'd be really open to new authors and/or novelists.

Favorite colors: cobolt blue, hunter green, orange, brown, crimson red
Collections: I collect science fiction and fantasy books, gemstones and minerals, stuffed moose animals
Allergies: No serious ones. I can't eat bananas, but I very much doubt someone is going to send me a bunch of bananas in the mail.
Lists of interests: Reading and writing science fiction and fantasy; learning about Astronomy/Physics; Ancient History (especially the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern areas of the world) I love British shows and humor. Love science fiction and fantasy shows and movies; jewelry making (beading/stringing, wirework, etc.)
Do you like receiving homemade gifts? Love homemade gifts.
What do you think of the ever popular "I'd like something from your town" idea?: I'd love to have something from someone's town.
If you've done the exchange before did you love the experience. This will be my second year participating. Despite my apprehension and my paran.... er... shyness, I had a fabulous time putting together the gifts I sent and receiving the gifts.
Those are the basics. Hope this helps.

Does this mean you can't eat anything containing bananas, or only fresh bananas?
Posted by larisse (Member # 2221) on :
It's pretty much fresh bananas. I seem to be okay with foods containing cooked bananas.
Posted by Frisco (Member # 3765) on :
I don't have any favorite colors or allergies.
This is my third year in the exchange, and enjoy it greatly. I'm not too picky when it comes to gifts, but something quirky is good.
I am not really in need of any more pink sequined nipple tassels, though. I wear them infrequently enough that they're holding up quite well since last December.
Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :
Um, you know, larisse, I could send you some fresh finger bananas. They're really really sweet. And they're, oh, two to four inches long, so really cute, too.
Posted by Eisenoxyde (Member # 7289) on :
Well, I thought I'd wait until the deadline like I did for signing up.
Favorite colors: grey, blue, dark green, "manly colors", etc...
Collections: I collect gemstones/minerals, chess boards, and books.
allergies: None whatsoever!
Lists of interests: engineering/hard science, geology, reading, European history, basically learning in general
Do you like receiving homemade gifts? Definitely
What do you think of the ever popular "I'd like something from your town" idea?: Works for me
If you've done the exchange before did you love the experience. Yes I've done it and if I didn't like it I wouldn't be doing it again.
/goes to wait for toungue to stop feeling all itchy and swollen-y

Nah, they'd get confiscated by the fruit-sniffing dog people coming in.

I'm sorry, I just couldn't.
Assuming I'm not out of the game, I like primary colors and don't much care for pastels. I'm neutral on earth-tones (hah!).
I'm allergic to most types of gifty hygiene products and to anything designed to be scented--especially candles.
I collect all things Disney, and have a pretty extensive science fiction memorabilia and toy collection. I love books. I also like receiving local flavor gifts.
Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :
You're not out of the game, you just don't get sent a match until you post here.
Posted by Paul Goldner (Member # 1910) on :
Does that mean I should have received a match at this point?
Posted by tmservo (Member # 8552) on :
OK, but what if we have posted in no location and just received no match yet?
Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :
TM, email me.

Hi, I'm new here and haven't had a lot of time for posting.
My favorite colors: just about all of them, as long as they're bright. Not big on dark browns, blacks or grays.
Interests: Music, older sci-fi, art (drawings and paintings), some current TV (House) and some older British comedies (Vicar of Dibley, The Young Ones). I also like the old Beauty and the Beast TV series (CBS, with Vincent and Catherine).
Homemade gifts are okay, but no food. No allergies, just trying not to overeat this year.
Local gifts are okay, but not necessary. Novelty gifts are neat, as long as they're not crude (toilet humor, whoopee cushions, fake vomit or poop, etc.). For example, one year I gave my adult brothers Bilz Boxes for Christmas:
They were a big hit. One brother spent 45 minutes trying to solve the puzzle, the other had his money out in 30 seconds. (I'm not asking for this, just using it as an example, and no, it doesn't come with money, you have to supply that! )
So anything cute or unusual would be fine.
Oh, and I like trivia books and motivational stuff too.
And since this is my first gift exchange, could the deadlines be posted again? I need to know how much time I have.
Thanks,
SS

The original thread is no longer stickied, so I need to ask again: what's the mailing deadline for presents?
Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :
I think it is the 10th, but you can look for the thread. It doesn't have to be stickied to find it guys. I'll bump it when I have a minute.
Posted by Squish (Member # 9191) on :
Mailing date is the 9th for non-student recipients. It's the 2nd for college students.
Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :
I try to bump it and keep it on the first page. If there really was anywhere you could ship from, I allow the 10th, you just can't.
Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :
We have been shopified today. The Ketchup Family's three gifts are ready to go-- recipients will be finding surprises in the mail shortly.
Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :
Awesome. Don't forget to email when they are mailed.

Well, if any of this year's participants are in Israel, their post offices are open Sundays.
