I'm just starting to get excited about this game system dropping. It's only 17 days away. I watched South Park last night and had to laugh a little. I'm not nearly as excited about it as Cartman but it is starting to build in me.

I'm more curious to see how the battle between PS3 and the Wii goes. My prediction is that far more Wii's will be sold based simply on the price. I've always been a big Nintendo fan and really hope to see the Wii sky rocket.

My excitement level is growing too, and I don't even plan on getting one until sometime early next year. Maybe with my income tax return.

I don't think it will outsell the PS3 over time though, but it doesn't have to. Nintendo isn't trying to trump PS3, which is why they stayed away from the hardcore gaming and graphics. They are going for innovative, for creating NEW markets in people who might not play games now. They want to steal marketshare, not take everything over.

Dollar for dollar, PS3 is going to win, and unit for unit, PS3 will win too. But Sony is going to lose a ton of profits with this thing. The value of their company is already down 40% from 2001. And video game sales are driving their company, especially amidst the largest consumer recall in history, with their battery fiasco.

Sony REALLY needs this to work out, and I think it will. They'll sell all their units, but it had damn well better live up to expectations, or they'll have to slash the price of the unit. Problem is, the Blu-ray part that is keeping the price so high isn't going to see a price decrease for a couple years, which is going to inflate the price of the unit.

To say nothing of the fact that I think both HDDVD and Blu-Ray are headed for a flop in the next couple years. We're YEARS away, as a society, from having enough HD TVs in homes to justify people buying a player that plays HD quality movies in their homes. I understand Sony's drive to try and stick a Blu-Ray player in every home, but I really see it shooting them in the foot. I'd rather buy a cheaper Xbox 360, or better yet, the now super cheap Wii just for the fun, without needed a super fancy TV to be able to enjoy it.

PS3 isn't going to see a profit until the price point comes down, a lot, or until Blu-ray takes off/more HD ready tvs are in the homes. Good times for Nintendo and Microsoft, both are going to pick up some marketshare from this. Nintendo will survive into the 8th generation, and likely, Microsoft and Sony will look like copycats in the aftermath, if they don't get caught for patent rights violations in the process.

I'm pretty excited for the Wii, but since I recently got an HDTV, I'm almost inclined to get the 360. I'm absolutely stoked for Zelda though, and I'll probably end up getting the Wii just for that. Problem is, it sounds like many of the first generation titles are going to have the same problems the DS titles did - i.e., they don't live up to the potential of the system and they're generally subpar. But in the long run, it's too hard for me to pass up Zelda, Mario, Metroid, etc. So, I'll probably be there on launch day, trying to score a system, which I'm thinking won't be that difficult given how many systems they're putting out there on day one.

I think in a gaming system the blu-ray is a better idea just based on the amount of data storage it offers. The PS3 will benefit from that for years to come.

Have you ever seriously been turned off by how many disks a game was?

Seriously take any game you love.

If it was 1 blu-ray dvd or 4 dvd's (bear in mind most games never go beyond 1 dvd, so it wouldnt suprise me if 95% of PS3 games fit on 2 normal dvds) would you really reconsider your purchase?

When Final Fantasy VII came out for the PSX most people actually loved the fact there were THREE CD's because they could grasp just how much content they were getting.

Not saying blu-ray's bolstered storage capacity isn't better, it just doesn't warrant the extra 200-300 dollars thats all. Now if it had blu-ray burning capacities in the PS3 that would be a whole new beast [Big Grin]

I read somewhere (awhile ago, so I may very well be misquoting), that when Microsoft was planning the 360, they asked developer's what sorts of improvements they'd like to see. One of the highest ranking answers was "more storage space". But then microsoft noticed that something like 80% of the games used less than 70% of the storage space and said "screw it, it's not that important"

In otherwords, the current amount of storage space really isn't getting used up anyway, so it's probably not important to have that much more.

The last time I owned a gaming system that wasn't some sort of Sony Playstation was about 1988. I was in their corner for a long time with this generation of consoles. But Sony's marketing and development practices have been so immensely annoying and arrogant that I have no intention of getting the PS3.

It's not really even the money, either. It's the stupidity, the greed, and the sense of entitlement that makes them think they can do whatever they want, on whatever timetable they want, and expect their little button-pushing drones to fall right in line.

Of course, I only bust out the video games a couple times a year, so doing without the next generation isn't going to cramp my style too much. But if I do break down and decide to get something, I think Sony has done a fine job of selling me on the Wii.

Maybe the next Metal Gear or Final Fantasy will change my mind (if they manage to hold on to the franchises), but I wouldn't count on it.

The PS3 really doesn't interest me all that much. If I had the spare cash, I would buy the 360 and the Wii. The 360 interests me because of Perfect Dark, and Halo 3 (when it comes out) and Wii because of Mario and Zelda.

Final fantasy is fun...but it doesn't really hook me enough that I want to buy the system for it.

Posted by 0Megabyte (Member # 8624) on :

Now, on the one hand, PS3 has two Final Fantasy XIII's coming, Resident Evil 5, Metal Gear Solid 4, Devil May Cry 4, and a number of other games that seem interesting. On the franchise side, these are the games I want to buy. Along with, of course, good looking original games for the system.

But I don't have $500 (or, God forbid, %600) and I won't for awhile.

Also, their marketing practices and the attitude the company's leadership seems to have about the system are beginning to piss me off, too.

For awhile there, every announcement Sony made seemed to make things worse.

"$600?!"

"Lame looking controller?!"

"No rumble feature?!!"

"the guy in charge called it a computer, saying it wasn't a video game system?!"

"He also shows deep contempt for us?!"

But anyway, as to the Wii:

I want one now. This is the first Nintendo system I've relaly been excited about since.. um.... since I was a kid.

First of all, compared to five or six hundred dollars, $250 seems VERY reasonable. The Wii will sell copies due to that alone!

The controller is the most innovative video game thing I've ever seen. I just hope it's used well.

Nintendo's strategy of innovation appeals to me. Granted, I don't really like a lot of their games, and am not interested in kids games as much, but even so, it looks to be awesome.

I'll be getting one first, no doubt.

Later I'll get a PS3. Because I want said games from above. But not yet. Oh not yet.

I'm not sure when, if ever, I will buy into this generation, but if I do it will probably be in the form of a 360. Honestly, a large portion of the decision is that I'm a huge Halo fan, and I really want to get Halo 3. Other than that, I might consider a Wii. The control scheme sounds like it could be interesting, and the new Zelda game looks good. It the system gets good reviews once it is actually out, I might consider buying it eventually.

On the other hand, I've never owned 2 systems by the same company, which is a streak I'd have to break if I bought one this generation. Maybe I'll just sit things out. In addition, a new computer is a somewhat higher priority than a game console, although the costs are a bit prohibitive at the moment even if I build it myself (which I'll probably end up doing).

Anyways, I guess that's just a long way of saying that I have no idea what I'm going to do as far as gaming goes, although a PS3 is very unlikely to be part of the picture.

No way is the PS3 going to win -- at least not at first, and I doubt they will at all. Nintendo's going to be far and away the lead console, and though the 360 won't sell at all in Japan, it's doing fine in North America and Europe. (The PS3 won't even ship to Europe for another six months or so, iirc.)

The only edge the PS3 has is its Bluray function, and even that's no clear winner yet. Sony's strategy seems to be marketing this as a cheap HD player rather than a game console -- which probably explains why they've done all they can to alienate gamers. They still might win with that strategy, but... I hope not. Microsoft's done a great job with their 360 division, and I want them to finally get some returns on their work. I agree with you that HD's going to be a flop, at least for another 5-10 years, particularly with the whole HDMI problem and probable ten other standards blowups that are bound to happen.

The 360's a more impressive piece of technology than I expected. Apparently the AI for Assassin's Creed will actually be superior on the 360 than it will be on the PS3, and Halo 3 looks amazing. (Which Microsoft's going to start selling when the PS3 launches, heh.) Had I the money and the space, I might actually go the Wii60 route. As it is, the only console I'm even vaguely considering is the Wii, and that's only if I can find some kind of adaptor to plug it in to my computer monitor.

...or when Lucasarts releases that Wii Jedi game they were talking about.

Lalo -

Sony will sell as many as they can at the launch price, then they will have no choice but to lower the price in order to compete. They'll still do more volume by the time this generation of consoles is over than the Wii will.

I think they will struggle at first, but people are waiting for two things: Customer reviews, and a drop in the price.

Nintendo has lost a huge huge piece of the gaming pie over the last two generations, and I think it's going to make up some ground with this one, but it'll still be in third place. Don't get me wrong, I think Sony is going drop billions from what it made off the PS2, but I still think they will beat the Wii by the time the next gen systems come out.

The Japanese price of the base PS3 has already been lowered, even before its release.

I think the real question is whether Nintendo will be as successful in courting non-gamers with the Wii as they have been with the DS.

Why is the PS3 so expensive in Mexico? It's like $800 American. You'd think they'd lower the price for a place that obviously can't afford it, but they jacked it up.

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

Probably because they don't expect to sell more than five or so there. [Razz]

Just remember, Sony (and Microsoft) have to keep the prices high for a while, in order to recoup costs. The number of units required is fixed, unless they want to take even longer (or lower) total profit. Nintendo actually has the luxury of a bit more elasticity of price, since they make profit out of the gate.

Sony is going to do REALLY bad for a while. They don't have nearly enough consoles to go around. Meanwhile the Wii will have plenty for everyone.

I think this will help out Microsoft. Sony is going to take a huge hit, and Microsoft and Nintendo will sell more.

I was planning on getting a Wii at launch, but it's more money than I had expected. I will probably get it early 2007.

im excited for the Wii. with so much 3rd party support, 29 launch titles, and 30+ for the virtual console, low price, well its hard not to want to get one. Zelda TP, Mario Galaxies, and Super Smash Bros BRawl are all system sellers IMO (especially smash bros).

im not sure how it will compare with the 360 and ps3 a couple years from now, but it will definently do better than the gamecube did. it will help sell 360's as well i think because they are the two cheapest consoles and the 360 is finally getting some decent games. Gears of War will be a system seller as well. while the ps3 looks to be the best system all-round, i dont think sony will have the same hold on the video game industry like it did the with the ps2.

EDIT: every year my sis sends me a list of places that i can pick from for a gift certificate for xmas. she was suprised to have me reply this year with Toys R Us. but now i will be able to get Wii for only $150.

Nintendo has a LITTLE bit of price to recoup too. Granted they aren't trying to make up for however much Sony spent researching the Blu-ray tech, or how to put it in the PS3, and whatever work Microsoft had to do for whatever makes the XBOX cool, but Nintendo had to develop the tech that goes with their motion sensitivity stuff, for which I believe they purchased the entire company that developed it (good for stifling Sony and Microsoft from following suit too quickly).

Regardless though, I agree that they have a huge advantage in price, not just because Microsoft and Sony depend on volume for their profit, whereas by now, Nintendo is used to having a smaller share of the market, and get their profits from less volume. I think they stand to be big winners with this generation of consoles.

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

Nintendo has a modest amount of R&D to recoup, but they're selling the Wii at a profit. Sony and Microsoft are selling their consoles at a loss and hoping to make up the difference in game and accessory sales.

Of course, the reason that Nintendo only has a modest amount of R&D to recoup is that the Wii appears to use essentially the same architecture as the GameCube, just with a somewhat faster processor (same processor line, though) and with, at a minimum, some GPU tweaks for the new lighting effects and so forth that we've seen in screenshots (the full extent of the changes to the GPU aren't known at this point). Sony and Microsoft both went to IBM and paid them to design entirely new CPUs (Xenon for MS and Cell for Sony), as well as entirely new GPUs (ATi for MS and nVidia for Sony, though the GPUs in the GameCube and Wii were also designed by ATi).

It's interesting that the cheapest console this generation is also the only one being sold at a profit.

It remains to be seen if Nintendo and 3rd party developers can come up with plenty of unique games that take advantage of the Wii. If they can keep churning out fun games that are inventive I can see Nintendo in 4-5 years being poised to deliver their next console with solid graphic improvements AND innovative peripherals for new types of games. I honestly can see Nintendo on track for dominating the market all over again.

Something tells me Sony won't let Wii win just by having a cool new peripheral. They will duplicate it as fast as possible, and if Nintendo does not grab this baton and run, they may never have the chance again.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Somehow I doubt that Sony and Microsoft will be able to fully incorporate the level of motion sensitivity into their games that Wii is going to, while also keeping the graphics at the state they are.

Then again, I haven't heard anyone say that Wii specifically sacrificed graphics for gameplay, so, maybe not, but judging from the half hearted attempt by Sony to add motion sensitivity to their gaming, it doesn't bode well for them. They need to be prepared, like Nintendo, to totally change the way a game is played. They might not see the need to, if they still pull in a profit and outsell Nintendo this generation.

Seeing as how Sony decided to also do a motion sensing controller, this doesn't seem all that likely. If the wii controller proves to be a big hit, I doubt that they can prevent Microsoft and Sony from jumping on the bandwagon.

This is tangentially related to my earlier posts: Microsoft is now in the black on each Xbox 360 sale, so the Wii isn't the only console being sold at a profit.

The Playstation 3 has great games coming, but not a heckuva lot showing promise now. I think that that, combined with the highest price tag in its market, may bite them more than they expect. Add into that the competing market for HD DVD standards, I wouldn't place any bets on the future just yet.

Don't get me wrong, I suspect Sony will do just fine. But as a recent business column I read noted, Sony's been making a remarkable number of mis-steps lately.

Controls in Zelda aren't 1-to-1. If you swing to one side, Link won't swing to that side, he'll just perform one of his regular sword swings. A lot of fanboys were complaining that it wasn't 1-to-1 initially, but most of the reviewers say it's still awesome and alot better than the GameCube version.

I think it's better. To use the sword you don't have to swing your remote, a wrist flick is all that's needed. I haven't gotten a shield yet, so I can't say anything about that. It's really fun so far.

I've read the PS3 is having a LOT of glitch problems, and they're being returned en masse to a lot of stores.

Don't have anything to substantiate that though, it was on the news earlier tonight. My cousin bought a Wii, and my Grandpa, who is 85, and hasn't ever played a game in his life had a blast playing the golf game with it.

Posted by Eldrad (Member # 8578) on :

My mom's the same way, Lyrhawn, only she's 46, not 85. She's never had even a passing interest in games, but she saw my friend and me playing it last night, and she said she'd like to try it out because it looked like a lot of fun.

When I got mine, all the guys in line were really friendly. I was pretty surprised, truth be told; I showed up at 10:30 Saturday night at Wal-Mart, and they only had 2 or 3 more people in line than the number of systems they had. I went over to our Circuit City, and that line was nearly full, even though they weren't holding a midnight launch. Oddly enough, though, it seems no one thought to go to Toys R Us. Since I didn't want to wait in line at Circuit City, I drove past the Toys R Us store in our city, and no one was in line. I showed up there at 7:30 in the morning (they were due to open at 10), and I was fourth in line, and they had eight consoles available. I got literally everything I was looking to get (and an hour early, no less! The manager was nice and allowed us to come in out of the cold to purchase our Wiis).

The interesting thing was that he told us one of the reasons Sony had told them that the PS3 was in short supply. Apparently out of each batch of the diodes they make for the Blu Ray readers, only so many of them are any good, which is why I am not at all surprised to hear that the PS3 is having a lot of glitches here at launch. Since Sony's trying to get these things to market as quickly as possible to make up for the slim pickings at launch, I'd bet that the problems are going to continue for some time to come.

So far, the only major complaints about the Wii are the ways Nintendo messed up their online implementation, to the point that (rarely) you can fry the firmware on your Wii, making it useless. Only a few reports so far, it doesn't seem as widespread as the 360 meltdowns, yet.

ive seen stuff like that being talked about over at ign. just read the Wii luanch thingy over there.

also there are complaints about ppl playing the Wii and their hands getting sweaty and slippery and many ppl have accidently let fly the controller and had it break stuff in the room.

i find that to be oh so funny.

BTW im still getting myself one for xmas.

I guess Nintendo can start marketing WiiGloves to protect against Wiimote projectile issues.

Well, they're supposed to 'strap on' to avoid that kind of thing. But the problem is the strap is attached by such a thin string it has been snapping.

A Wiiglove would also be good to prevent sweat damage to the remote over time, unless it is completely waterproof. [Wink]

That's true, but if you're jabbing hard enough both to make it fly from your hand and snap that string, you're using it wrong. The remote is really sensitive in all three games I've played (Wii Sports, Zelda, and Ultimate Alliance), and there's no reason to be using that much force to ensure your movements are registered.

A testament to how "into the game" people are getting I suppose.

I mean, those carboard tubes that were leftover when the wrapping paper was gone at Christmas didn't NEED to be swung at my brother so hard, but let's say I was really invested in the moment. [Smile] Besides, after repeated swingings, when they'd break, I end up with nunchucks, which is even better.

I should patent the Wiiglove before Nintendo sells it, it's already catching on!

Maybe in a bigger city, but at least where I live (~40k people), that wasn't even the case for the launch of the system, so I would doubt there'll be many, if any, instances of that happening.

Well, the great Thanksgiving Wii experiment of 2006 was a smashing success... it's really something the whole family can enjoy, whether they like video games or not. Seeing my sister-in-law and mother-in-law attempting to beat the living daylights out of each other in the Boxing game was priiiiiceless. [Big Grin]

Posted by Eldrad (Member # 8578) on :

You're not kidding, Zeugma. My dad had a very slight interest in video games way back in the day (he used to play Duck Hunt with me sometimes when I was little), but that quickly disappeared, and my mom's never had even a passing interest in games. Now my dad stops in the hallway to watch me play, and my mom has said she'd like to play Wii Sports sometime. They both were also talking to my grandparents about it, which really displayed their interest in my mind since it was a topic of conversation for them.

Everyone's talking about how sore they are from the boxing game this morning. [Smile]

Honestly, it was something to see, people who would never in a million years have wanted to play a video game were claiming the TV to play this thing. I think we've logged about 8 hours on the Wii since we got down here, and Mark and I have only gotten to play it maybe 1 of those. Way cool. [Smile]

This has been EXACTLY my experience. My mom/dad/grandparents, who would have never played videogames before, are playing wii sports and loving it. My dad has decided to get a Wii (for my 6 year old sister he claims, but we all know the truth), and I'm quite amazed.

As a long time gamer myself, I find the Wii to be loads of fun, easily worth the 250$ and 4 hour wait it cost me. It has impressed me like no other gaming system ever (though I'm still worried about breaking the controller, which as already been dropped by various family members twice).

My brother said the controller could be thrown against a wall and still work. Of course, there's no way we're testing that. [Big Grin]

The last video game my mom ever played was the orginal Super Mario. She had a blast playing tennis with my sister-in-law (who I've never seen even touch a video game until now). My brothers and I are already absorbed in Zelda. (Finally I can keep up with them). The Wii is just too awesome.

Since I'm just planning on playing Twilight Princess on my GameCube, I had no real desire to get a Wii at launch. *shrug* I was originally planning on it, back when Metroid Prime 3: Corruption was a launch title, but that got pushed back.

I still plan on getting one, though--most likely the day Metroid Prime 3 comes out. ^_^

Like a video game. Certainly not beautiful, like the 360 stuff on your TV. But we were playing Super Monkey Ball, so it looked like cartoon monkeys, only really big. [Wink] Didn't look bad at all.

Stayed up all night (8pm-7am) in line to get a Wii. Totally worked.
Camped out with my brother, and it was at a local store. I also knew a manager of a somewhat close store, and he told me I could get there and get some. So, my other brother that made it late (4am) headed to the other store and was first in line there. It was in a mall. And I promptly sent my other friend that was looking for a wii over there as well. They both scored wiis tonight.

I wish the best of luck to everyone trying to get a wii. I'm extremely excited now that I have one, but I have to go to sleep now that I've been up almost 24 hours.

Twinky: it looks ok, but I know with component cables it will look much better. Then again, I hate interlacing, and I know when DVDs aren't properly interlaced and deinterlaced.

Wiis are selling for fairly reasonable prices on ebay.

Looks like you can get one for around $300 on ebay, but the prices for Wiimotes nad other stuff is ridiculous, once you get everything you need you're in the $500 range.

I haven't owned a game console since SNES. And even then, after the first year or so it came out, I lost interest. FF3 and Zelda: Link to the Past were really the last games I bought, and that was ages ago - probably back in 1994 or so.

The Playstations never interested me, nor did XBox, though I'd play Halo at a friend's house from time to time - and God of War at my sister's house. I marveled at all the new Final Fantasy games, but never felt compelled to buy any of them.

I was a PC gamer, and even then not much of one. C&C, to Starcraft, to Vampire: Redemption, to Warcraft 3, to WoW, to Vampire Bloodlines - and that was it.

That said - I want a Wii.

Something about it just makes me want to play it. Everything I've seen about the system just screams out "fun" to me. I'll probably get one next spring, when prices drop a bit and there are a few more games available.

I can't believe I'm going to be buying another console after more than a decade. [Big Grin]

Posted by Eldrad (Member # 8578) on :

I was actually the same way, FlyingCow. I actually had both an Xbox and a Gamecube, but I had no intentions of buying any more consoles - I didn't play enough of either of them to justify my purchases of them, let alone to make me think about buying something next-gen. All the same, I have a Wii sitting in my room, and it's so much freaking fun.

I finally got one yesterday! Target turned us away and we put all our chips in at EB Games at the mall. There were 3 dudes in line already since 5:00am though only one of them was buying so Tiffany and I hung out there, (It was 8:30am). The store manager got there an hour before doors and said nothing to us basically which we took as a good sign as we figured if they had none he would tell us in advance. Doors open and we were giggly. Finally the first in line sauntered up to the manager and gave him a sort of, "you know what I want." schtick. The manager said, "uh...what do you want?"

They had no Wii's but they were expecting the last truck shipment of the week that day. We were told the UPS guy could come from 10:00am-5:00pm. Tiffany and I thought, well shoot he could come at any time lets stay an hour or two. I was determined to leave here there until the shipment came while I went to work, turns out Tiffany had other ideas so we both stayed there. About 25 people were in line waiting for that shipment.

At 2:30pm some fed ex guys rolled up and delivered 2 boxes. One box had 3 Wiis, the other had some games. Some guy in line offered to buy mine off me and I said I'd accept $600. He seriously considered my offer but declined, which made me happier anyway I just wanted to get home.

What am I doing this morning? Guess. Typing up a history paper that was due yesterday but did not get completed as I spent so much time in that line! Why am I wasting time writing this post?! [Wink]

Congrats BlackBlade! Glad to hear you got one!

I traded in our PS2 for Zelda a few days ago, and since then we've logged an unheard-of 3 hours on it!! I love the puzzles, and while it's way more complicated than the other two Wii games we've got, the Wiimote helps a lot. As long as the game doesn't suddenly become a lot harder and less puzzle-y, this may well be the first video game I sit down and play for more than a few days since.... Mario 64, I think. [Smile]

Where are you at? I had to replay all the way through the forest temple as I cannot update my Wii and give it SD memory card saving capabilities. I like the puzzles alot to, they are alot of fun. I really like that they throw you into things it feels like I am just getting so many items and special abilities so fast.

Sure Tom, but would you also have given me a subscription to Nintendo Power magazine? [Wink]

BB, I'm not sure if I'm in a forest temple or not, I just finished hearing the girl at the top of the tower explain how the twilight world came to be. I think Zelda drains the batteries in the Wiimote pretty quick, with the Nunchuk and all the rumbling, so I had to stop playing early last night. [Smile]

I just want to walk into a Circuit City or EB and pick one up off a shelf with a dozen or so. Or just have Amazon send me one in 5-10 days with Super Saver shipping.

I really hope they're making a Castlevania game where you can use the Wiimote as a whip. [Big Grin]

I love Castlevania, FC, that's the coolest thing I've hear yet.

We were talking at work yesterday about them needing to sell some sort of strap to attach the Wiimote to your ankle so you can play soccer with it.

I wanted them to release sole to put in your shoe to play with, but the strap is probably easier and cheaper.

Beat the first three temples and have finally cleared the way to the fourth. I had some side quests that looked interesting and all of them are QUITE rewarding.

Walked into the fourth one saw the first room and thought, "I need to stop for the day, this is gonna be a big time commitment."

Went over and snuggled my wife while she plays WOW. Then we spent the rest of the evening watching Ninja Challenge [Big Grin]

That temple is going down tonight. The whip idea was SERIOUSLY the coolest thing I've heard in awhile, I thought about the soccer idea too.

Now if only Enders Game the movie would come out in the next 5 years, the Wii version would be released with a special Enders Light Gun and we could all play each other online and form armies.

Oh boy I need to stop, way too much giggling....
